i have a Compaq CQ56, fairly new with a duel core P340 athon (2cores - 2.2Ghz Each, 4Gb DDR3, ATi 4250 RAD HD Mobility 256Mb ded GFX)

My friend is not so great with computers, but he said he has a T42 with 1.5GB DDR2 ram, 1.8Ghz CPU, and a 64mb ATi gfx card. He wants to game with me, but that means Im stuck playing crappy games. I really hope he DOES actully get a summer job, and buys a decent gaming config

Is windows xp good for student use I'm in college. I also use iTunes and stuff like that YouTube and I need to use word documents. They are under $200 in amazon and I wanted to k ow if it was a good idea to buy one so should I?

@Ikpojagg Windows XP is very dated. I recommend Windows 7 if you want to stay with a PC. Microsoft Office 2010 and Windows 7 is your best bet.

Nice video, I just got an IBM thinkpad last night from a friend and I think im going to give up my Dell Inspiron 9400 and roll with this T42 for a while. How do the two laptops compare in performance? and I am going to up grade the memory in the T42 to at least 2gigs is that recommended? hit me on my channel with an answer and thanks.

I've got a T42 with same specs and yeah, build quality is awesome - titanium screen hinges are still solid and don't wobble like most do, keyboard feels fantastic, even the touchpad feels nicer and more responsive than others I've used.

Only issue I used to get is it overheating a lot - reapplying thermal paste on CPU fixed it.

Also, one weakness of the T4x/R5x models is failing solder joints between the mobo and ATI graphics chip (on ATI equipped models) - hasn't happened to mine though.

Awsome video i got my think-pad T42 and a copy Windows XP today and the specs look really good for a 5 year old computer it had linx on it so yea... Also do you know what Sound card it has? and how do you turn the think light on?

@TheDannyHan I don't know what sound card it uses, I just sold mine. It's probably Conexant though. Thinklight: Fn and the top right key on the keyboard.

omg. don't care about the 'think lamp', the freakin location of the ibm logo or the xp sticker, your software config and CERTAINLY don't care about your other laptops. how many times are you going to mention the resolution? and how many videos have you made about this same laptop?

Hi...very informative video....I'm from Pakistan and I'm on a really tight budget....I'm thus planning to buy a refurbished T42....Should I go for it or should I keep on saving up for a brand new model?? Are there any problems with the T42 line like somebody said about wi-fi issues??

My T42 is for sale right now, for $225USD. Anyhow, the T42 is a great computer. I think it's it for sure. However, newer ones are usually better but a lot more expensive. Problems? No, the wifi is great. I can't list any problems of this computer. It's a good buy.

hot to boot from CD? on T42

Put CD/DVD in CD/DVD drive and turn on the computer. If it says press any key to boot from CD/DVD, press a key. If it just boots your operating system press F1 during startup when it says ThinkPad. Enter the system BIOS, and change the boot settings so that CD/DVD drive is set to boot before the HDD.

I just installed a proper Ethernet driver on my t42.

it can't detect the link.

I had a similar problem on my t41 and t42 .When using wireless would disconnect all the time. so I uninstalled the wired driver and just kept the wireless driver installed , and it works great like this,the wireless remains connected all the time now, no more disconnects.

Hi. I have a question:

How can I increase the memory space for the lenovo T42. does 512MB mean the storage space for the laptop? Could I buy something to increase the space?

512MB is RAM, or Random Access Memory. I think you need a bigger hard drive. The Hard drive is IDE 2.5 inch. An EIDE would also work, and you want a 5400RPM. Most likely, you have 40GB. I would recommend a 60GB or more.

T42+XP Pro is perfect match to me, it perform way better than T61+Vista.

Good choice. I actually put Windows 7 Beta 1 on my T42, and it is, believe it or not, just as fast or maybe faster than Windows XP Pro SP3!! Windows 7 is such a fantastic operating system, give it a go, and check out my channel for W 7 videos.

Nice review, keep up the good work.

I've a T42, had it around a week, love it! It feels so sturdy compared to other brands I have used, and the keyboard is sublime. I even use it in place of my desktop PC when I'm home, just for this reason. In short, a pleasure to use.
