The Sedaris family has produced some extremely funny people, and I'm not even counting Dinah the Christmas Whore. David and Amy are amazingly funny. Combined, they probably surpass any sibling comedy duo in recent memory. I miss the old Strangers with Candy days and David's books continue to be outstanding. I'm hoping Amy moves back into the spotlight where she duly belongs.
What I really love about the Sedaris' is that... they're both funny, both brilliant. But in completely different ways. Amy Sedaris is just such an exuberant, over the top, exploding firecracker of life and just constantly hilarious, to the point that you can barely keep up with her, so much energy. Whereas David is quiet and odd, and considered. They both smile a lot, and both share that knack of saying something hilarious and weird which you only appreciate once the moment has passed. Brilliant
@rrtodd95 That's actually hilarious. Also. You know a joke it truly dirty when it takes you a while to work out who you could actually tell it to. Is he short in person?
@jerryhello100 I never knew Plato had a sense of humour? I thought that was Aristotle. You see, now I am getting my Greeks mixed up! lol I'll look into Plato anyway, thanks ;)
Just a lovely awful mix of cynical, tender, awake, patient, neurotic, zen. his observational powers harken to older times, when America was more literate, when intellectuals lived in the shadow of Parisian sophistication and sensual adventure, when Be Bop grabbed us by the lapels, and as a consequence even talk show hosts could reference Faulkner or Joyce; but he is also remarkably contemporary, of this moment, without having seen and heard so much that it stops him from setting it to writing.
El Condor Pasa is not a Simon & Garfunkel song, it's by Daniel Alomia Robles, that's why Peruvian bands play it everywhere, cause it's so popular that S&G put lyrics to and made a cover of it.
If you enjoy David Sedaris, Augusten Burroughs or Chelsea Handler, you'll love LOST IN THE HIVE, a hilarious and outrageous collection of true stories by author Brian O'Mara-Croft. Order it from your favorite online or bricks-and-mortar bookstore.
David sedaris is awesome, and he's not just known in the Us, either. My Austrian friend found this book in a bookshop in Vienna and had to immediately buy it, his name on the cover was enough incentive to do so.
David Sedaris: a prince among men. His story about being alone in his French country house at night, being thrilled he knew the French crossword ( 2.down: "Vagine!!!!!") is one the the most side splitting things you'll ever read. If you don't wet your pants reading it, you're officially dead.
Your English seems good enough to download the audiobook version- all his books are available in audiobook online if they don't have the actual book in your region, also Amazon will definitely send his books to all of Europe, since he lives in several European countries himself now :D
@nanogod - thanks for your useless analysis, you know what else falls under the "dictatorship of stupidity"? Pretentious and self righteous proclamations from the artistic fringe.

lol the sandwich wrappers.... every single chinese restaurant has the same chopsticks and the descriptions are ridiculous. read them next time you get chopsticks just read it... its awesome
Um have you ever read any of his books? I don't understand how you could say you love him and not know he's gay. It's mentioned all the time in his writing.
Hahahaha great comeback. All I did was point out that there's no way you've ever read a David Sedaris book, and you give a poorly written response saying that I'm mean. Except you said that you hope I die, and you never want to see my face again. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but have we ever met in person? How have you ever seen my face? Really great insult, by the way.

I personally think that "When You Are Engulfed in Flames" is his best yet, due in large part to the longer-than-usual essay "The Smoking Section". Master of humor!
I have to ask this... which of his books have you read? I'm reviewing Pygmy for a magazine right now and I can objectively say that it is hilarious. Choke is funny. Survivor is dark and satirical. Haunted is darkly funny. Humor is rather subjective anyway... All I'm saying is Sedaris is overrated when it comes to satire.
Tell me... how exactly was I passing 'it out as fact,' as you say? An opinion on the merits of a writer can never be fact, so please tell me how I could possibly do that?
Sedaris is really a lousy reader. I'm sorry! I have all his books and I read them aloud and people are ROFLAO.
He writes some of the funniest stuff I've ever read. He's absolutely hilarious! But, for some reason, when he appears on the David Letterman Show, he doesn't read the way he writes.
Test it for yourself! Read one of his essays (of course, you might be breaking up during the course of it) then guage your reception against his.
i listened to an audio version of his book, "me talk pretty one day" in which he reads and it's brilliant. his delivery voice is incredibly funny. i think he may just be nervous reading on national tv here.
Not to incur the wrath of a thousand Sedaris fans, but it simply must be said: Sedaris is not that funny. Satirists who were/are funny?
