I hate when they rush the triplets! It's a melodic line, not a figuration. She's a fine pianist and her performance of this ballade is, for the most part, convincing, but I like the version playing in my head better.
wow all i can say is shes great, but 1810fox, being a former classical piano player myself, i know how hard it is to play and how much concentration and learning it takes to do it, can you do what she's doing?
She is a regular pianist. She is famous because she is gay and she is very beautiful and she protects the wolves and she has an eccentric life. Other than that she has nothing special as a pianist
@1810fox It is hard to find a great woman pianist under 50 years old nowadays. Valentina Lisitsa "breaks" the keyboards and others have no personality nor authenticity.
Hard to find another woman pianist like Maria Joao Pires, for instance.
Taking into account these considerations, Grimaud's performances are good, sometimes very good. She will probably improve after age 50, who knows?
Please let me know if you knew some great lady pianist under age 50, maybe i missed some.
@sonatina6 yulianna avdeeva, valentina igoshina, lisitsa is actually very good...helene grimaud is also very good...anna fedorova, helene tysman are good but not great... and if you're talking about really great pianists under 50, probably there's no one other than evgeny kissin(both genders included)...
@sonatina6 avdeeva won the chopin international competition at warsaw this time... the others are not so great but are good pianists... if u'd like to see good young pianists you can check out the channel called "Athur Rubinstein" (note it's not Arthur)
@sonatina6 Aimi Kobayashi, Yeol Eum Son, Mitsuko Uchida, Martha Argerich, Maria Joao Pires, Yuja Wang, Yoonjung Han, Lola Astanova, Claire Huangci, Lise de la Salle, Khatia Buniatshivelli (not sure if I spelled her last name right) etc... are all excellent young female musicians who play often
I can hear notes in this version that you don't hear in Horowitz, although perhaps recording has gotten better as well. But Grimaud is generally very crisp, among other great qualities.
wow i realy DONT like this...I Dont like this rendition at all. obvisouly she is a good pianist but i dont think this is how this piece should be played. Anyways matter of taste and all have different ideas...
A parte la registrazione "ferragliosa", preferisco questa Hélène ruspante a quella di 10 anni dopo, "costruita" ed "esperta di immagine e marketing....
@formenlehre You have bling bling capitalism mentality in your heart (very shit mentality)...this is not a hiphop artist......the photo is simple and beautiful like the girl...
@formenlehre Ok no problem, she can do whatever she wants with her album photo...it's just that when i see this photo, i don't think any second about his hair or his shirt...i just see a beautiful woman with simple clothes...Don't be so superficial.
@formenlehre : You are so critical !..., you may not know much about french culture in the south of France ?...., She entered the Paris conservatory at age 13, and she was 16 Y/O in that picture and this is 25 years ago in the south of France where she lived in Aix en Provence, she was probably on vacation at her parent's house, she was relaxing on holiday !... the photograph is by Henry Ely - in Aix en Provence !...
I like it but it's not my favorite interpretation however she was young when recorded it and her interpretation of Chopin's Sonata op. 35 no. 2 from 2005 is one of my favorite.
I'm still convinced that the "polish" way of playing Chopin is correct! :D Therefore this version of the ballade no 1 sounds a little strange to me. I prefer Artur Rubinstein and Krystian Zimerman.
Nevertheless I rate Hélène Grimaud even before Evgeny Kissin on 2nd place of the living pianists after of course Zimerman! :D
Not at all! Just listen to Artur Rubinstein. That's together with Krystian Zimerman Chopin as it should be played!
Of course music is always a matter of taste.
I don't tell you what you should prefere. Please be objective. The pain of having to leave his loved country is/was shared by Rubinstein and Zimerman! And you hear it clearly in there interpretations. So therefore I like both versions better than Hélène Grimaud ... That has nothing to do with french culture.
@MusikPiratCH Yes, it's a matter of taste. And I think Rubinstein is complete drivel. UNLISTENABLE. Also, his first name is Arthur, not Artur; read his biography and you'll find he did not like the snobby way of mis-spelling his name.
You seem not to know, that the spelling of Art(h)ur Rubinstein differs from country to country. He was (perhaps) the very first citizen of the world. (As you easily will find out when you have really read his biography!)
Unlistenable? You probably never played piano yourself! Artur Rubinstein's interpretations are widely regarded as the best of every composer! Not because of his pianistical but his musical approach. end of this useless discussion of an ignoarant like you!
@MusikPiratCH First citizen of the WORLD?? OMG that's so laughable. I've read his biography (2 volumes - very full of himself) I'm a professor of music, have played piano for nearly 35 years. His name was Artur. And his playing, although technically amazing, is musically garbage. I'm done with ignoramouses like you.
@John19182004 Where is written how Chopin should be played? Such a stupid comment. That means everybody who plays differently is wrong. I don t think you played this as well as she did with 16.
It is not the best version of this piece what I heard.
Zimermann, Richter, Olejniczak and many others pianist but not Grimaud. She is amazing in for example chaconne ( Bach-Busoni), Rachmaninov, but no Chopin.
@AnnMarry19 I don't agree with you. this version is to my mind the best, it's brillant to the beginning from the end and then when i hear zimermann's version for example, i'm disappoint. So everybody has his own point of vue...
@Haarmoonyy In my opinion (just my opinion though ;) ) it lacks several rubatos to emphasize the melody and not make it sounds as if it's an automaton playing mechanically. Still, her interpretation sounds very good

@satyu131089 Thank you very much, I will check the pianists you mentioned.
I know Igoshina, Lisitsa but i never heard of Avdeeva nor of Fedorova or Tysman.
If you hear of other very good women pianists please let me know.
I am interested especially in those who played concertos with orchestras.Thank you so much! I appreciate this!
