  • I liked your talk Helen. I think that Hopper's painting is a direct expression of his personality.  He was very flat and didn't seem to express anything. I had a teacher in Provincetown who met him and said the same thing. Really flat. He didn't show anyone having a good time.

    Well . . . let's try to REASON about this for just a minute.

    (1) You say: Hopper's personality was "flat and didn't express anything".

    (2) And you say: Hopper's paintings are an "expression of his personality".

    (3) It follows then that: Hopper's paintings are flat and don't express anything.

    So Hopper's painting are popular for their flatness & lack of expression, right?

    Maybe . . . you should forget amateur psychology and learn some aesthetics instead?
