I' ve always liked this guy...was a teen when The Revolution and Whitey's on the Moon were released. That was a WOW moment for me! The Original Rapper, I call him.
Gil looks like one of the brothers Johnson, Jimmy Hendrix with a touch of Larry Ghram, now that makes a gorgeous man, love this song, pure raw talent.
Gil Scott Heron was brought to my attention shortly after the news of his death in May this year. Incidently, on May 27th 2011, I was celebrating my 24th birthday in Amsterdam, getting high with friends. Accordingly, I decided to pay attention to his musical legacy and I'm very glad I did!
i was in the 8th grade in 1975 & heard this...my friends and I used to laugh at the lyrics......now at 50, thinking back, someone should have cracked me on the head with a bottle for not taking the message to heart...
@fat8622 Amazing groove indeed! And, that ain't all. As these good folks have said, Poet, Prophet,
Activist, addict, musician, singer, did I mention that he was/is a poet? And when I say poet or Poet, I mean poet as in Dylan poet, "Smokey" Robinson poet, Joanie Mitchell poet, Laura Nyro poet, Springsteen poet, Paul Robeson poet. And maybe, a bit beyond any of them poet. Gil, the silence (death) has taken you, but you've said enough to be heard for a long, long time. Be well.
Old Man Again... Gil only scratched the surface... Rythm, Word, the way he captured NYC in a song.. Latino, Soul, Rap, Jazz..Unique.... Will always love his music... Ageless.... He will live forever...W

@Quandrify We r trying. But there is no support in the industry for political messaging. So you have to do it yourself. Backpack it. Look out for a group by the name of Dominant Genetikz. Members from San diego to the bay to germany. Its an odd blend of sounds similar ton the Wu's liquid swords, to Mos black on both sides, to brotha ali. Batlle/political. THANK YOU GIL. Your music, poetry and ideology escorted me from adolescence into manhood. Your rhythms provided a background for my early development. Thanks for leaving BIG footprints in this thing we call life. Thanks for helping to wake up black America and serving notice to white America. I only hope that your death re-awaken the social conscience of America and help to renew the absolute hunger for cultural knowledge that's desperately needed amongst our people....................THANKS GIL
At the November 7, 1980 concert, Gil Scott came on the stage at 8:00p.m. and stated
I have have a annoucement that may affect your lives forever, Reagan just defeated
Jimmy Carter and America is doom. At that point, he perform a song that I never heard and that song developed my political and socail viewpoint on what is reality in America. The song could sum up the plight of Africian-Americans in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 or 2011. The song is "Winter in America."
The first Gil Scott Heron album in 1970 which includes "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." Being a Gil Scott fan sine I was 13 years of age, in 1980 while going to school in Atlanta I seen him in concert at the Agaro Ballroom(across the street fromthe Fox) on November 7, 1980. To me, that date is important because Ronald Reagan was elected President onthat date and when I graduated from college in 1980 Gil Scott made an album that our class adopted. The album's name was "1980."
Man Gils got to be the most intelligent insightful and influential musician/spoken word artist to ever be...love the guy its a shame he had to go when he was just coming back to public knowledge with his new works...RIP...you had so much soul I dont see how you'll fit through the pearly gates...they might be widening them as I type
Gils voice broke thru fear hatred and the residue of the civil rights movement. He was so neccesary. So real so beautiful so black. He has never been far from me since I was first introduced to him in the 70's. I loved him. Great artist/troubled man R.I.P.
MY favorite Gil Sott song !!!!! What a great song writer and singer. So many great songs.I'm so glad I got to see him in his prime back in the 70's and early 80's. RIP Gil !
R I P Gil Scott Heron. . back in the day at Constitution Hall he did a couple of gigs there and in that time it was smoking in the building and when you go the the rest room, you didn't have to have any weed for as soon you was in the area you get that contact. God there were some great concert and very great time. Thank Gil
Gil was in the spirit of our best. He was not perfect and gave in to some demons but he brought the message for uplift of our people and we are forever grateful. Saw him once in Atlanta but dug his music and messages over and over from LPs. You can finally rest in peace Gil. Thank you!!!
THE ORDINARY CONCEPT OR GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IT IS TO BE DEAD . . . WILL NEVER APPLY TO GIL SCOTT-HERON . . . AS WITH ALL TRULY GREAT TALENTS . . . HE TRANSCENDED THE ORDINARY MAN . . . HE HAS BECOME A LEGEND . . . THEY DO NOT DIE . . . THEY ENDURE FOR ALL TIME . . . HIS SPIRIT WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE AMONGST THE PEOPLE.
This was my favorite Gil Scott Heron record next to The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. He had been through so much during his life, but he brought the world some amazing music. Must be some hellified music being made in heaven with so many musical geniuses already there, hope they were there to greet him and welcome him home. He will shine with the stars in heaven. Rest in Peace, Brother Gil.
He will be Reborn.....tha Revolution do continue!!! RIP Brotha....we love you always....you, Curtis, Marvin my godheads of those gone days. Love On.!!!
I discovered this as a 15 year old, I saw him live in Porto a couple of months back and it really moved me, this man raised the spirits of a capacity audience in his old age, and he lived and died as an inspiring figure for everyone.
A political activist, a brilliant poet, a master musician, one of those people anyone aspires to be.
RIP Gil Scott-Heron, and thanks for all you did for humanity.
Will always remember his powerful poem " The revolution will not be televised" Saw him Toronto I think at the Bamboo. R.I.P my dear brother you did well as you opened our eyes and our minds to the real world of what many have gone through.
Why do people only get the coverage and justice they diserve once they have passed away ?! Only now just discovered this outstanding talent and been informed at the same time that many consider him the pioneer of rap music, because the BBC are paying homage to him !!... Well just why couldn't they have done this earlier and given him some 'airtime' whilst he was still alive, then maybe I could have watched one of his live shows, which also looked out of this world !
@imoutofsensibleideas It is a shame I agree--- I was fortunate to be turned on to him in 1973- I was 16yrs old- He changed my music listening immencley. Me and a few of my friends- followed his career- When I heard of his passing- I called my friends- we listened to Winter In America- I suggest you do the same- Please listen carefully to the words (if you havnt already) My heart goes out to you and all who knew and loved GSH. Peace Brother- Always unless its not televised
@coolsweetgroovy WITHOUT A DOUBT! He should have been honored at the Kennedy Center, an Unsung on him, an VH1 special on him, and more of a mention on MTV (bc i don't expect anything more from that sorry excuse of a music channel), and ESP SOME type of honor at his own ppl, pathetic ass B.E.T. BLACK Entertainment!! why the hell not honor him at BET awards, air the documentary (Black Wax or TheRevWillNot on there?) AND STILL regardless THE LOVE POURS! Have no doubt Elder; WE LOVED YOU!!
@coolsweetgroovy . you mean well but missed what Gil was all about. He'd laugh his off about some plastic Rock & Roll Hall of Fame bullshit. If you want to honour this GIANT MANs memory, then let's start getting in on in the USA, taking it to the man just like the brave brave brothas & sistas are doing in Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Bahrain, Spain. Revolution today, USA. Long overdue. See you all on the barricades
@elps84 I agree that the rock'n'roll hall of fame thing is bullshit, and I fully plan to get on with doing the real work, but let's not lie, the publicity would be good. The more people hear it, the more people are inspired by it, so I say do it. Maybe I'll see you on the barricades from Westminster.
@clapton1958 Don't you see what all the hip hop artists are doing? No one will understand Gil's message, because it'll be distorted by the mass media and corporate regimes because something like this can seriously disrupt their profits; imagine if the whole population of teenagers were all of a sudden concious that they were being brain-trained to be narrowminded in their views of culture? No more Justin Beiber, no more Little Wayne, no more mainstream! It's a nightmare to culture corporations.
@Quandrify Then let's all take our cues from Gil and bring out thousands of people willing to tell it like it is. I'll be there and we'll forcibly change the shape of culture as proletarians. The power is with us, not with them.
Message to the Rappers that song was message to all people, what a brilliant Artist. What a powerful voice that will live on. Last time I saw Gil Perform at the Stone Soul Picnic in DC about 10 years ago and the love he got from the crowd was awesome.
"If you see some brother looking like a goner, it's gonna be me." I've listened to this song a million times, but this is the first time I really heard that line. Thanks for decades of great music and poetry that will live on for many more.

A political activist, a brilliant poet, a master musician, one of those people anyone aspires to be.
RIP Gil Scott-Heron, and thanks for all you did for humanity.

@coolsweetgroovy HELL YES HE BELONGS IN THE HALL OF FAME FOR ROCK MUSIC
dal4018 8 months ago

@rtoriq I agree

@elps84 OK
coolsweetgroovy 8 months ago
@elps84 I agree that the rock'n'roll hall of fame thing is bullshit, and I fully plan to get on with doing the real work, but let's not lie, the publicity would be good. The more people hear it, the more people are inspired by it, so I say do it. Maybe I'll see you on the barricades from Westminster.
clapton1958 7 months ago
@clapton1958 Don't you see what all the hip hop artists are doing? No one will understand Gil's message, because it'll be distorted by the mass media and corporate regimes because something like this can seriously disrupt their profits; imagine if the whole population of teenagers were all of a sudden concious that they were being brain-trained to be narrowminded in their views of culture? No more Justin Beiber, no more Little Wayne, no more mainstream! It's a nightmare to culture corporations.
Quandrify 7 months ago 3
@Quandrify Then let's all take our cues from Gil and bring out thousands of people willing to tell it like it is. I'll be there and we'll forcibly change the shape of culture as proletarians. The power is with us, not with them.
