@iMcMaster007 I i dont have an awd audi, and i'v never had an accident. i got a front wheel drive volvo and we got snow almost half the year in sweden.
I can drive nothing but manual cars. Automatic slush boxes are always guessing what gear I need, and this really bothers me. Car education is a must. I see to many idiots in a single day of driving.
I am a business major and automotive enthusiast. My Ultimate Plan is to start a driving school, for exactly this reason. Students know these days how to direct a car, not how to drive a car.
I am super excited and happy that you made this piece, best Road Testament EVER!
Dude, you are absolutely correct. JF and I had that discussion, but there was a ton of conversation that didn't make it through the editing process. Tires make a huge difference. I have studded tires on my Subie Legacy GT, winter tires on my allroad, and hoosiers on my miata (track bitch)
I live in Canada, and learned to drive in the dead of winter. Not to say that I;m a great winter driver, but I drive for conditions, and know how my car handles--which is to say it slides real easy so I have to be careful. What I do notice though is that many people seem to think they can still drive a 80 km/h down a snowy icy street--which would explain all the winter wrecks. So many people don't take road conditions into consideration when they drive.
Hello, This is Matthew LeBlanc - the Audi Club instructor from the video. Yes, the 2011 S4 with manual transmission and sport diff is AWESOME (winter tires too). No doubt, it's a great car to toss around in the snow, learning how to drive takes more than the machine. I was using my 05 allroad earlier in the day (before the students arrived) and I was practicing my Scandinavian flick (google it). It's not the car, it's time behind the wheel!
I am sixteen, live in Chicago, and I totally agree with all weather drivers ed. Many of my classmates, myself included have been involved in weather related accidents.
I'm 19 and a Subaru enthusiast in the Boston, and was concerned about this very issue. So this winter I decided to teach myself (with no knowledge of programs like this) in a controlled environment, with other much more experienced drivers than myself. And quite frankly, this season alone that experience has definitely helped me. None the less however, this is by far the best Road Testament ever.
Team O'Neil has a bunch of amazing courses taught by true professionals. I highly recommend taking any of their classes if you want to become a better driver.
...I wish I lived in the Northeast. I feel I should take my girlfriend to one of these. She's very frightened behind the wheel when it comes to road conditions.
Also, I agree, most drivers do need a lot more experience and training. It blows my mind that we (americans) let kids with only (or less than) 20 hours of driving to drive in whatever conditions they want. Just not right and I think it needs to be changed.
@ryudatuba we need atleast 40 day time hours and then 10 nightime hours with a permit lasting 9 months in which we have someone in the car with us in the state im in, to tell the truth i think this is necessary since it helps gain experience (got my permit, and man people are unpredictable while driving!)
"Scared to death of other drivers" Please take the bus or have someone drive you.
I applaud her effort to learn and become more confident but until then please don't drive...
Driving is NOT for everyone, the public transit system in many cities especially in the states is very good and should be taken advantage of especially by those who don't feel comfortable behind the wheel.
I could not agree with you more JF. My father gave me driving lessons in the snow, ice, rain, night to prepare for anything the weather has to trou my way. And i am a better driver because of it. Driving for 20 Years without any accidents.
P.S can you also teach kids how to change a tire or check the oil please. I can't tell you how many time i have seen people driving around Jersey with screeching, depleted break pads.
Oh, and by the way- In Europe i had to takeabout 8 hours of road rules, after that came 20 hours of city driving with an instructor, some skidding in a parking lot and a TOUGH exam.
Here, in the US- i sat through a 3 hour class of road-rule video, took two hours driving with an instructor, had a 30 minute TEST (Answers available on the internet) and drove for like 15 minutes to pass the driving exam(three point turn, stop sign, park paralell) AND THAT'S IT.
I also am in agreement there needs to be more driver education. I spend at least an hour each day driving and it's nerve racking knowing how unpredictable the people in the cars around you are. Almost all current standard driving schools teach laws of the road, and some slow speed maneuvers, but nothing having to deal with actual car control.
It's rather scary when you think about how many people depend on cars for transportation but haven't a clue how to actually operate them.
Team O'Neil Rally School is the best! I went here less then a month after I bought my 2010 WRX to help me adjust to an AWD car from my typical RWD cars I used in the past. The staff and facilities are top notch.
@Unlimited0871 yes, it is true. not many people drive "stickshift" as they call it, even ones who know how to and like to drive manuals. The main point having an automatic is the mass of traffic lights, STOP signs (which i find useless) and traffic jams in major cities. I live in NY and i can tell you that not having to worry about changing gears is much easier in here. (don't get me wrong-I LOVE "stick")
Most People who do have a manual here, use it as a joyride car and have an auto for daily
I'm the guy in the video - Matthew LeBlanc. All three of my cars are manual. Personally, I own a Miata (track bitch), Audi Allroad (tow bitch) and a Subaru Legacy GT (daily driver). While 95% of the US market are automatics, you'd be wrong to assume that all manual transmissions are used on the weekends.
@SmokinS4 what i wanted to say is that while there are people who use mauals daily (I'd be one of them too), the majority of drivers in the US choose automatics. Those people are not that mutch into cars and driving a manual is quote: "too much work". I know there alot of drivers in the US, who don't even know how to drive a manual.
I enjoy driving a manual, and that is not a problem, but a privilage for me to have more controll over the vehicle, versus "easier" driving.
It's crazy that one so simple thing like safe driving in snow isn't a compulsory thing you learn when you get your driving licence. Here in sweden we have to be 18 years old and one of the things we learn is just safe driving in snow. Every body shold go to a enclosured slippery course (don't know the name) and get you some of that knowhow about safty snow driving!
"Is FLD on the brink of bankruptcy or something? Or don't you feel any responsibility for promoting such foolish antics as Super Speeders represent. I HOPE MANY PEOPLE THINK TWICE WHETHER TO CONTINUE SUBSCRIBING TO FLD!"
You can imagine responses weren't of positive kind. :D
Glad to see continuing to subscribe paid off. Like many others have said, one of the best Road Testament episodes ever. Keep up the good work!
Great episode. I am 21 living in GA and wish that I had access to something like this while learning to drive and even now. Unfortunately it will be a few more years since I need some cash. I am thinking of going to the Porsche driving school once I get the money.
JF that was a gr8 vid special the the last segment. it is exactly the same in NZ, kids have very powerful cars but driving school is OPTIONAL. coming from EU I am scared of these drivers on wet in winter i leave my car at home because they r idiots. last shot could be an ad for safe driving brilliant
it's because most americans don't know how to drive. Too, distracted with other things, like the stereo, phone(talking, texting, etc.), freinds in the car, eating, makeup, reading(paper, documents, etc.) are just some that come to mind. Basically, doing things they shouldn't while driving.
This video was REALLY GREAT FLD! Winter driving schools along with other driving schools. Should be part of the steps to getting your license. I will be making my way up to this driving school next winter.
"The North Atlantic Audi Club (NAAC), a chapter of Audi Club North America, develops, promotes, and hosts a variety of educational, cultural, and sporting events of particular interest to the Audi owner"
i agree with the winter driving schools. what has helped me in more than one occasion is driving on bak roads in the snow and drifting a little. not lik ken block stuff but lik 10-15 mph whipping the back around a corner. helped me cuz last month my rear end just whipped out in a turn somehow. didnt even spin the tires but simple things lik that helps new drivers
I screw around in parking lots when it snows, and I think I have a pretty good grasp on how my car handles. But yeah, this should be mandatory. My screwing around helped a lot and allowed me to not crash when I forgot to put my truck in 4x4 mode when it was icy.
Well done JF, I think you are on to something by selecting a good topic for Road Testament and investigating into it well, then delivering a good report. But perhaps even more important was getting rid of that narcissistic, loudmouth jackass...Alex Roy. Fuck that guy.
@mellowdalyricist Well, lets face it. Most people can learn to drive as easily as they could ride a bike when they were children. I never once rode on training wheels.
I passed both my drivers, and my motorcycle licence the first time, and have never been in any accidents. I feel very confident in saying, that I am an intelligent driver. I think there should be better measures taken to really access how good a driver somebody is before granting them a full licence.
This is by far the best Road Testament I've seen. It's so relevant to daily life especially here in North Eastern Canada where I live. I've already had about seven of my friends drive off the road thanks to inexperience.
everyone should get their permit in the winter, thats when i started driving, and it will bring your general driving skills up way above everyone else that started in the summer.
Least nerdy and douchy JF episode I've seen. Much better to watch you investigate something that we can all learn from than to listen to your opinions on how F1 technology is relevant in a Prius. Thumbs up for more investigative JF.
on february 20th, a snow storm almost killed my 2010 mazda 3 and could have taken me too. i realized i could have done something to avoid skidding and hitting those barriers if only i had gotten some experience. these courses should be mandatory in all countries where it snows so please take the time to go to one of these things. If not for your safety, do it for the safety of your car. im 20 years old and seeing my car wrecked like that was the most heart breaking thing ive seen.
With Quattro and snow tires, that alone will greatly improve any winter driving. What about those that don't have awd, and those that put the rest of us at risk buy driving in snow on bald tires, or summer only tires. I feel like even before taking a course like this, you should at least properly equip any car you're driving for winter duty.
This was the best Road Testament Ever! It should be about the cars and the drivers not just two cocks sitting and discussing cars. It should be about great cars and great driving technique. Best episode since they talked about that old super car and drove it as well. I can't remember what it was called it has been so long since they posted a decent show!
Good job JF you should be doing more of that format, much more job to do, but also much more interesting and informative than a ichat conversation with Alex. And you seemed to like more what you were doing.
Don't go and spend cash making your car "better" - spend it making YOU better. Its an investment for life.
I don't know about in the US - but in other parts of the world, doing the courses to improve you and your skills - has the bonus of lowering your insurance premiums.
I take every advantage I can get of driving in the snow. Alot of people are afraid of getting some practice in snow driving, I'm the opposite, as soon as it starts snowing, I get out and drive. Be surprised how quickly you can learn.
Please put more of this type of video content for road testament. Its cool to see JF and Alex sit in front of a camera talking about cars, but this is so much closer to the actual name of the show. JF and Alex in real cars, doing real things!! GREAT JOB GUYS!!
Yeah good job, when you're a good driver all you have to do is learn to avoid the ideots after that, when it iced over in dallas this year 90% of the drivers had no clue what they were doing...
This was great !! I hope you do more of these!!! Great Job JF hopefully one day here in America they will make it mandatory for kids and adults to take these courses. I going right now to find one near me.
this is why when i got my car and after thew first snow fall i went to a empty parking lot and learned how to control my car when i lost traction. many people will think oh that is just some punk kid messing around. That is true to a point but i think everyone NEEDS to understand how cars react to these conditions. I even took my mom with me one day to try to convince her she needs to do this as well because the second i slide the car sideways she froze and freaked out worst reaction possible
honestly not only people who live near constant snow but anywhere that can get snow in general or rain even, everyone should atleast have some kinda idea of what to do when your car loses traction...
i live near st louis and we litteraly get every type of weather possible, and yet people here still dont know how to drive, young people older it doesnt matter >.>
to my knowlege there are no schools around here that teach this sorta thing... legally
Your claim that Europeans look at Americans as bad drivers, although it may be true, is problematic. I live in a Scandinavian country, and from my vantage point, there's not much substance to the claim. Even though Scandinavia has a reputation of it being snowy and icy and cold in general, lessons in driving in slippery conditions are not a part of the process, other than a bit skid control on a wet surface. I generally view American drivers as being very careful compared to the EU.
Here in Sweden you have to pass a winter driving test before you are allowed to take your license... and it is mandatory to fit winter tires to your car during winter conditions.
Your right about that, we, the Europeans, do think you're crap behind a wheel, but not just that, its the simple fact that you let 16 year olds take their driving license, let 18 year olds go to the army, have the ability to buy a gun and vote, but only let them drink at 21... Why?? You trust kids that dont even know the value of money yet, to drive on your roads and let them be a menace to others, you trust them to buy guns, but you don't trust them until they are 21 to drink?! Change it around
thank you for this video, people in general could be better drivers, and reduce car accidents by events like this.its not a 5 star ncap car that is going to safe a person, it's his skill to drive the car.
@kewl10mac Australia is far worse, far more aggressive. I witnessed 3 counts of road rage last week, one where a guy ran outta his car and open the door of a truck and started to smash his face.
@Zwank36 I personally have never had the physical side but definitely seen the verbal abuse. But all i was saying is that in Australia we are only taught to drive down residential roads, then maybe do a 3 point turn and thats it. I personally have done track days and driving courses to improve my driving. For the fact that its an activity that is the most likely to get you killed, i want to be equiped with the skills to drive properly.
You know what I don't like? I don't like the slight undertone of superiority of traveling car enthusiasts criticizing american driving as the worst there is. You know what? American driving isn't even all that bad, and the only reason that it is not as good as european is because there is no need to navigate such high speed mountainous roads and that some american drivers are douchebags...always in a rush. I regularly visit my relatives in Germany, roads & people's attitudes are way different.
Great video JF love the camera action and love the car. Totally agree with you in training teenagers to become better drivers.Being 16 we get bad raps as teen drivers, but all i have to say is get out there and drive and get familiar with your vehicle. Events like this will help you drastically and feel more confident behind the wheel.
You tought about Winter Driving Education to make people ready for heavyer winter conditions , but you haven't tought about minimum limit to 18 y.o. for getting driving license so they would be mature enough to manage better and using cars with simple traction considering few cars have such a good traction system as Quattro . You Americans are like children , you express fun , but you don't respect more severe limits and so , you wonder how come so many bad thigs happen .
GREAT EPISODE. i live in canada and even here with all the winter we get, you can find bad drivers everywhere. i think more people need proper driver education, not some bs classes on how to read signs and share the road because frankly, everyone should know that. i wish i lived near a rally school tho :/

JF that was a gr8 vid special the the last segment. it is exactly the same in NZ, kids have very powerful cars but driving school is OPTIONAL. coming from EU I am scared of these drivers on wet in winter i leave my car at home because they r idiots. last shot could be an ad for safe driving brilliant

probably the best road testament i've ever seen. good PSA as well.
chatham2006 11 months ago
it's because most americans don't know how to drive.

I will be making my way up to this driving school next winter.

i agree with the winter driving schools. what has helped me in more than one occasion is driving on bak roads in the snow and drifting a little. not lik ken block stuff but lik 10-15 mph whipping the back around a corner. helped me cuz last month my rear end just whipped out in a turn somehow. didnt even spin the tires but simple things lik that helps new drivers

I screw around in parking lots when it snows, and I think I have a pretty good grasp on how my car handles. But yeah, this should be mandatory. My screwing around helped a lot and allowed me to not crash when I forgot to put my truck in 4x4 mode when it was icy.
100littlecurses 11 months ago
Well done JF, I think you are on to something by selecting a good topic for Road Testament and investigating into it well, then delivering a good report. But perhaps even more important was getting rid of that narcissistic, loudmouth jackass...Alex Roy. Fuck that guy.
camronm77 11 months ago
@camronm77 I agree... lol, keep Alex out more!!
BUT keep him on the team if he helps makes video like this!! lololol!!! :D

It is wayyy too easy to get your drivers' license in the U.S. to be honest, I myself, learned how to drive AFTER I got my license.
mellowdalyricist 11 months ago
@mellowdalyricist Well, lets face it. Most people can learn to drive as easily as they could ride a bike when they were children. I never once rode on training wheels.
I passed both my drivers, and my motorcycle licence the first time, and have never been in any accidents. I feel very confident in saying, that I am an intelligent driver. I think there should be better measures taken to really access how good a driver somebody is before granting them a full licence.
You know?
LittleMikeStarCraft 11 months ago
Completely agree, now all we need is someone to be passionate about this, enough to start lobbying.

I agree with JF. Invest in yourself and your technique because the car you drive or race today may not be the one you drive or race a year from now.

Lesson 2: learn to brake with the transmission/engine at higher (20mph+ speeds) or break reeeeaaaaallllyyyyyyy slooooooowly...

So the clip starts with a driver fatality.
Then after that, all that was shown was how cool an Audi looks 4 wheel drifting....neat.
Way to influence safe driving.
Also in a car that most of us can’t afford.

everyone should get their permit in the winter, thats when i started driving, and it will bring your general driving skills up way above everyone else that started in the summer.
nccamokid 11 months ago
Least nerdy and douchy JF episode I've seen. Much better to watch you investigate something that we can all learn from than to listen to your opinions on how F1 technology is relevant in a Prius. Thumbs up for more investigative JF.

on february 20th, a snow storm almost killed my 2010 mazda 3 and could have taken me too. i realized i could have done something to avoid skidding and hitting those barriers if only i had gotten some experience. these courses should be mandatory in all countries where it snows so please take the time to go to one of these things. If not for your safety, do it for the safety of your car. im 20 years old and seeing my car wrecked like that was the most heart breaking thing ive seen.

the easyest way to drive in the snow GET SNOW TIRES you know those with nails in them they work!!
icelike22 11 months ago
With Quattro and snow tires, that alone will greatly improve any winter driving. What about those that don't have awd, and those that put the rest of us at risk buy driving in snow on bald tires, or summer only tires. I feel like even before taking a course like this, you should at least properly equip any car you're driving for winter duty.
Crazy83519 11 months ago
This was the best Road Testament Ever! It should be about the cars and the drivers not just two cocks sitting and discussing cars. It should be about great cars and great driving technique. Best episode since they talked about that old super car and drove it as well. I can't remember what it was called it has been so long since they posted a decent show!
EliteGuard01 11 months ago
Good job JF you should be doing more of that format, much more job to do, but also much more interesting and informative than a ichat conversation with Alex. And you seemed to like more what you were doing.

Hewhosmokeswomen 11 months ago
The final comments in that video say it all.
Don't go and spend cash making your car "better" - spend it making YOU better. Its an investment for life.
I don't know about in the US - but in other parts of the world, doing the courses to improve you and your skills - has the bonus of lowering your insurance premiums.
ZagatoZee 11 months ago
I take every advantage I can get of driving in the snow. Alot of people are afraid of getting some practice in snow driving, I'm the opposite, as soon as it starts snowing, I get out and drive. Be surprised how quickly you can learn.

this is why when i got my car and after thew first snow fall i went to a empty parking lot and learned how to control my car when i lost traction. many people will think oh that is just some punk kid messing around. That is true to a point but i think everyone NEEDS to understand how cars react to these conditions. I even took my mom with me one day to try to convince her she needs to do this as well because the second i slide the car sideways she froze and freaked out worst reaction possible
themiker15 11 months ago
honestly not only people who live near constant snow but anywhere that can get snow in general or rain even, everyone should atleast have some kinda idea of what to do when your car loses traction...
i live near st louis and we litteraly get every type of weather possible, and yet people here still dont know how to drive, young people older it doesnt matter >.>
to my knowlege there are no schools around here that teach this sorta thing...

ChallengeDK 11 months ago
Here in Sweden you have to pass a winter driving test before you are allowed to take your license... and it is mandatory to fit winter tires to your car during winter conditions.
Great ep FLD!
SpdyHS 11 months ago
Your right about that, we, the Europeans, do think you're crap behind a wheel, but not just that, its the simple fact that you let 16 year olds take their driving license, let 18 year olds go to the army, have the ability to buy a gun and vote, but only let them drink at 21... Why?? You trust kids that dont even know the value of money yet, to drive on your roads and let them be a menace to others, you trust them to buy guns, but you don't trust them until they are 21 to drink?! Change it around

Australia is the same mate. You are taught to pass the test, not how to drive the car
kewl10mac 11 months ago
@kewl10mac Australia is far worse, far more aggressive. I witnessed 3 counts of road rage last week, one where a guy ran outta his car and open the door of a truck and started to smash his face.
Zwank36 11 months ago
@Zwank36 I personally have never had the physical side but definitely seen the verbal abuse. But all i was saying is that in Australia we are only taught to drive down residential roads, then maybe do a 3 point turn and thats it. I personally have done track days and driving courses to improve my driving. For the fact that its an activity that is the most likely to get you killed, i want to be equiped with the skills to drive properly.
kewl10mac 11 months ago
man, the last quote was deep dawg.
i wanna see FLD do more videos like this. honestly, this is the best alternative when Top Gear is off season.
NibbleHusky 11 months ago
