Jel is to the MPC 2000xl and sp1200 what Q bert is to the turntable. He came up with the idea of chopping drums and playing the MPC as an instrument. MUCH respect to Shadow, but he CAN NOT do this on live on the fly.. lok out for a cat named krem he's coming up in the producer circuit fo sho.. ILLLL shit here

wouldn't say he was the first to come up with using the mpc as a live instrument. just one of the best at it. and you say shadow can't do this? have you seen pushin buttons with the mpc 3 aka shadow numbark and cut chemist? either way they r all dope as hell. btw it's really not so hard to rock the mpc live it's all in the way you set it up and practice. (but his ear for sounds is crazy)

I think Jel could make some nice extra cash if he released an instructional DVD dissecting his chopping and layout, and also how he developed those skills...I´m really curious whether he has a special layout for each song and just drills that song until he has it, or some kind of basic, universal layout.

All I know from watching his vids is that he always keeps the "background sound"in the bottom left corner.

I think he assigns a lot of his samples with multiple sounds, i.e. high hat and bass kick is recorded on the same pad, therefore giving him more flexibility to use his other fingers for stabs, snares, and basslines. Hands down Jel, you are the only person to date that is a one man MPC show, along with the golden knight that is the dr. 303.
