A compressor basically takes the audio dynamic range, and compresses it to a narrower dynamic range. this is often done to prevent clipping prior to sending signals into digital devices, or in the case of Radio, prior to transmitting the audio over the air. It is also done to bring up the bottom end, and reduce static hiss noise in the quieter parts of the song.
