I think you are both (barb/ thrash) wrong on the dropping of the bombs on Japan. There is an equally good argument that the only reason we dropped the bomb on the Japanese was to demonstrate our new power to Russia as the Cold War was about to begin.
For the same reason that we locked up Japanese Americans but not German Americans, it could be argued that it was more racially acceptable to drop the bombs on the Japanese as a demonstration. Killing two birds with one stone so to speak.
The first successful atomic bomb test was on July 16, 1945.
Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945.
Truman's main reasons for dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were to bring a quick end to the war with Japan, and the fact that many Americans thought the war should have ended with the surrender of Germany. The two bombs dropped were the only functioning ones the US had at the time.
It was a message not just to the Japanese, but the German and Italian people as well as Stalin.
The Japanese Internment during WWII was motivated by race and legitimate security concerns. FDR initially resisted the idea, but congress and public opinion forced his hand. There was also a major difference in the number of German and Italian Americans versus the number of Japanese Americans.
I agree with all above, but since all the memos between the generals, the scientists and the President have been released, our history cannot deny that they had options. If Truman would have diplomatically defined unconditional surrender to allow the Japanese Empire to save face, surrender could have come months earlier. Stalin and the Soviet Union as well as retaliation for Pearl Harbor were the reasons for the bombs. They go as far as to plan for the most collateral civilian damage.
In the end the best way to end the war and save the greatest number of lives was too drop the bombs. Ethics and morality have no place in war. The only thing that matters in the end is victory.
I know it sounds cruel, but if I were in Truman's shoes I probably would have done the same.
Another point: At the time Truman decided to drop the bombs, American forces were within bombing range of civilian populations. Most of the civilian population lived in wooden structures that went up in flames like so many match boxes. In one bombing raid using conventional bombs the U.S. could destroy 80,000 Japanese civilian lives. The Japanese military accepted those casualties and would have resisted surrender to the bitter and absurd end. The military tried to stop the Emperor's surrender.
I don't think the Emperor knew how many bombs the U.S. had. He must have realized, in a flash of insight, that if the U.S. had several more of these devices that it would be a matter of weeks before all of Japan was vaporized. The people had never seen the Emperor and thought he was a deity. He made a recorded announcement of the impending surrender. A splinter group of the military tried to prevent its being aired to the populace. The U.S. assured the Emperor's court that he would retain power.
For months prior to the surrender our own experts laid out a plan that would be acceptable for surrender. Truman chose to use language in negotiations that prolonged the war. Why?
American lives or Japanese lives were not part of any reason for the bombs. Our leaders were looking past WWII and at what was becoming the Cold War.
Payback for Pearl Harbor was a plus. We shamelessly celebrated the massive destruction.
Why? Well, now I must tell you that I am not an historian. I just don't know the details that well to tell you why. My guess is that the U.S. was looking for an 'unconditional surrender,' and didn't feel they were getting those terms during negotiations. The discovery of the bomb must have seemed 'fortuitous' to Truman. I bet his intuition told him that it would put a sudden end to the war. Since there were only a few bombs, that hunch was a gamble. The war could have lasted longer in any case.
I do teach history if that matters, but I give credit to your life experiences. I was taught the same as you in high school and the books still say pretty much the same, but many documents have been released that now show a different history that is harder to write about and embrace, so we don't teach it yet, because we cannot face that truth.

Our hero's are always the one's that do the right thing when no one is looking, sacrifice his/her life for a just cause and put the greater good ahead of personal gain. Ethics and morals always have a place.
There is a difference between the treatment of a whole nation and an individual prisoner. Getting correct information that hastens the end of the war should be more important than the methods used. The "methods" used by the last administration are well documented to produce false information which would do nothing but lengthen the war. The US didn't use force to get information from German, Italian and Japanese POWs and that reliable information helped bring WWII to a quick end.
Also, not using force on enemy POWs helps ensure the safety of our own captured troops. From a purely tactical standpoint having the moral high ground is an advantage in war no matter the enemy. Plus during WWII enemy soldiers were more willing to surrender if they knew we wouldn't mistreat them. In the end morality can be as useful a weapon as any bomb.
Then just do what Obama is doing--same thing Joe Montana says we should be doing--viz. 'take no prisoners.' And Obama doesn't need to because he's using U.S. UAVs which kill them on the spot; or Navy Seals that blow out three brains simultaneously; and paying the Pakistani Army to finally kick their own peoples' ass. Bush & Cheney denied all along that they had foriegn prisons, used excessive methods or condoned torture. We know now that it was all lies. She could have misconstrued the meaning of 'enhanced.' As when one enhances the eyes, eye-liner is used to give one the Cleopatra look. Or, she could have heard 'skate-boarding,' when the term 'water-boarding' was used. If you were a bleeding-heart democrat, then you might support an 'enhanced' experience for the incarcerated goat-molesters. This enhancement would include, TV, rec-room, weights (to build muscles so that they could handle an AK-47 with ease when released), and skate-boarding.

I think you are both (barb/ thrash) wrong on the dropping of the bombs on Japan. There is an equally good argument that the only reason we dropped the bomb on the Japanese was to demonstrate our new power to Russia as the Cold War was about to begin.
For the same reason that we locked up Japanese Americans but not German Americans, it could be argued that it was more racially acceptable to drop the bombs on the Japanese as a demonstration. Killing two birds with one stone so to speak.

The first successful atomic bomb test was on July 16, 1945.
Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945.
Truman's main reasons for dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were to bring a quick end to the war with Japan, and the fact that many Americans thought the war should have ended with the surrender of Germany. The two bombs dropped were the only functioning ones the US had at the time.
It was a message not just to the Japanese, but the German and Italian people as well as Stalin.

The Japanese Internment during WWII was motivated by race and legitimate security concerns. FDR initially resisted the idea, but congress and public opinion forced his hand. There was also a major difference in the number of German and Italian Americans versus the number of Japanese Americans.
None of that made it right, or legal.

I agree with all above, but since all the memos between the generals, the scientists and the President have been released, our history cannot deny that they had options. If Truman would have diplomatically defined unconditional surrender to allow the Japanese Empire to save face, surrender could have come months earlier. Stalin and the Soviet Union as well as retaliation for Pearl Harbor were the reasons for the bombs. They go as far as to plan for the most collateral civilian damage.

In the end the best way to end the war and save the greatest number of lives was too drop the bombs. Ethics and morality have no place in war. The only thing that matters in the end is victory.
I know it sounds cruel, but if I were in Truman's shoes I probably would have done the same.

Another point: At the time Truman decided to drop the bombs, American forces were within bombing range of civilian populations. Most of the civilian population lived in wooden structures that went up in flames like so many match boxes. In one bombing raid using conventional bombs the U.S. could destroy 80,000 Japanese civilian lives. The Japanese military accepted those casualties and would have resisted surrender to the bitter and absurd end. The military tried to stop the Emperor's surrender.

I don't think the Emperor knew how many bombs the U.S. had. He must have realized, in a flash of insight, that if the U.S. had several more of these devices that it would be a matter of weeks before all of Japan was vaporized. The people had never seen the Emperor and thought he was a deity. He made a recorded announcement of the impending surrender. A splinter group of the military tried to prevent its being aired to the populace. The U.S. assured the Emperor's court that he would retain power.

For months prior to the surrender our own experts laid out a plan that would be acceptable for surrender. Truman chose to use language in negotiations that prolonged the war. Why?
American lives or Japanese lives were not part of any reason for the bombs. Our leaders were looking past WWII and at what was becoming the Cold War.
Payback for Pearl Harbor was a plus. We shamelessly celebrated the massive destruction.

Why? Well, now I must tell you that I am not an historian. I just don't know the details that well to tell you why. My guess is that the U.S. was looking for an 'unconditional surrender,' and didn't feel they were getting those terms during negotiations. The discovery of the bomb must have seemed 'fortuitous' to Truman. I bet his intuition told him that it would put a sudden end to the war. Since there were only a few bombs, that hunch was a gamble. The war could have lasted longer in any case.

I do teach history if that matters, but I give credit to your life experiences. I was taught the same as you in high school and the books still say pretty much the same, but many documents have been released that now show a different history that is harder to write about and embrace, so we don't teach it yet, because we cannot face that truth.
We are about to ignore the truth again.
Truman was deliberate and calculating. Guessing, fortuitous and intuition are not good history words. IMHO

Isn't this the real current question. Is the cost of giving up our fundamental values, ethics, and freedoms worth winning a war or by shelving our morals and principles do we actually lose perspective as to what we are really fighting for.
Our hero's are always the one's that do the right thing when no one is looking, sacrifice his/her life for a just cause and put the greater good ahead of personal gain. Ethics and morals always have a place.

There is a difference between the treatment of a whole nation and an individual prisoner. Getting correct information that hastens the end of the war should be more important than the methods used. The "methods" used by the last administration are well documented to produce false information which would do nothing but lengthen the war. The US didn't use force to get information from German, Italian and Japanese POWs and that reliable information helped bring WWII to a quick end.

Also, not using force on enemy POWs helps ensure the safety of our own captured troops. From a purely tactical standpoint having the moral high ground is an advantage in war no matter the enemy. Plus during WWII enemy soldiers were more willing to surrender if they knew we wouldn't mistreat them. In the end morality can be as useful a weapon as any bomb.
If that seems contradictory its because it is.

Yes force makes change faster, but it is not lasting. True change is slow and steady and has a foundation based on solid uncompromising principles. Machiavelli may be the current philosopher of choice but it is not lasting.

This is a controversy that has been floating around for over half a century. Does it make any sense to try to find the 'real' answer to who's right? Two facts: racist propaganda was used in recruiting Americans in FDR's effort. It was a huge effort and Germany needed to be defeated first. Secondly, Japan would not surrender. A longer war would have meant hundreds of thousands more of American lives. Japanese Americans spoke English yet they were mis-trusted. The West Coast was spooked by Japan.
