  • Is that Vivian's last TV appearance?

  • From what I heard, there was little affection between Vance and either Arnez or Ball;

  • @trinitymike That was at first later Lucille adored Vivian and They were great friends Now Bill Frawley and Vivian they never warmed up to each other and that is putting it nicely LOL

  • @trinitymike - actually, from what I've read, the only "bad blood" of the 'I Love Lucy' foursome existed between only 2 of them: Vivian Vance and William Frawley. Vance felt that the age difference was too great for them to play husband and wife. When Vance won an emmy for best supporting actress in the early 1950s, Frawley said to her, "I guess they give them things to just about anyone".

  • @thowen1988 "In March 1966, a sick and frail 76 year-old William Frawley was walking down Hollywood Boulevard after seeing a movie. He collapsed right on the sidewalk, was dragged into the lobby of the Knickerbocker Hotel, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. While dining in a Hollywood restaurant, Vivian Vance, upon hearing of Frawley's death, announced "Champagne for everyone!""

    owch!!!!!!! LOL

  • @trinitymike - Certainly not one of Vance's finest moments; I guess Ethel was nicer than Vivian.

  • While the entire cast of "I Love Lucy" is flawless, Vivian Vance has always been my favorite. What a class act; I have the whole series on DVD, and my wife and I still enjoy watching it, and we're in our 40s.

  • Without Vivian Vance" I love Lucy" would never have been the same, a great comedian

  • Lucille Ball and other famous actors and actresses would join the Rat Pack when they would rent out whole theaters to "secretly" watch porn films and get drunk of their asses. As expected from this type of audience, during the porn films the comments were both vulgar and funny.

All agreed that no one was more vulgar and funny during those films than Lucille Ball.

  • Who else think that Viv's nose job screwed up the look of her face?

  • well that was weak rush limbaugh newt gingrich and mitt romney deserve some smearing today ask wanda skyes vivian vance lucy were alive today they wouldn't make obama laugh need to Insult the far right lucy died peacefully and normally.

  • Is Dean Martin drunk?????

  • @rburton34 - actually, the question should be when was Dean Martin NOT drunk, since it occurred far less frequently.

  • @rburton34 always

  • @rburton34 always

  • Wow ... funnnnnneeeee!

  • The most underrated actress ever. RIP Vivian!

  • REAL Roasts, when actors and celebrities didn't need to use filthy language to make people laugh.

  • i was born in the wrong era...

  • Wow I had no idea that they had roasts in the 70's lol

  • @TheSurfinbird21 They've been doing roasts for more than 50 years, maybe longer.

  • @ duckgeezer I believe hattielovecattie was referring to Vivian Vance and William Frawley as hating each other, not Lucille and Vivian......so you do your research. According to reports CBS offered Vivian and William their own spin off show from I Love Lucy but Vivian refused to do it.

  • lucy will live on forever!

  • It's amazing that a show that only lasted 10 years is still being aired half a century later--and people still enjoy every minute of it :)

  • aww i wuv vivian!

  • I Love Viv..

  • Brilliant bio of Vivian--she went through hell and back with her illness and had a prickly relationship with Lucy--but still managed to be funny

  • Honestly, I think the problem with Hollywood isn't that there isn't as much talent (In fact I find myself realising more and more how many talented people are in modern day Tinsel Land.) The major problem with it, that makes it so dull and pointless compared to those golden days, is that there's no commroderie. In the olden days, all the stars knew each other, and on shows like this and the others, there was a strong sense of kinship and tight bonds between everyone.

  • Awesome intro, god I wish I could had met them this was all beffor my time.

  • You probably don't remember me... LOL! Vivian Vance's delivery was perfect!

  • What incredible ladies they both were. We do have our talents now, but it's sad that stars like these are no more. So glad we have the films for posterity.

  • @millerlight789 --such as?

  • i bet if she would talk about fred it would be much worse

  • @2devmoran Those two hated each other!!!

  • @HattieLovesCattie Do a little research please. They were very good friends.

  • @WTFOVER1901 That was what the "roasts" where like... they usually were making fun of the other person. :)

  • This is a classic example of why Vivian Vance is my favorite on 'I Love Lucy'; she was a class act who has been quite underrated.

  • The 6 dislikes are from the producers of the new roasts. Even they know their shows pale in comparison.

  • these were the days when you joke around and not have to worry about hurting someones feelings. now it's all this political correctness bullshit.

  • Its funny to see the evolution of things people say on television. Back in the day, things were pretty simple and classy... Roasts weren't vulgar. Now, think of these jokes in comparison to the roasts now a days.

  • Funny thing is Vivian Vance(Ethel Mertz) and William Frawley(Fred Mertz) disliked each other off stage.

  • According to Vivian Vance's bio book, she and Lucille Ball were best friends for as long as they knew each other. Lucille visited Vivian in her home right before she died of cancer and left the home sobbing. I Love Lucy wouldn't have been the same without Ethel Mertz. Yes, these roasts suck. The edits of the roast just show old cronies laughing. Not funny.

  • This guy named Daniel J.Selby (He's on the web) put on his resume(quite the Phoney resume for someone who claims he's in ShowBusiness) that he worked closely with Vivian Vance on a fig newton commercial and was one of her closest friends when she passed. I have looked all over for this commercial and have never seen hell or high water on it. But then again this guy has been in and out of Sanitariums all his life, so figure the source.

  • whoa this is sooo weird i have never seen them in color before lolz....wow lucy's hair is bright!!!

  • The "roasts" they have now are pitiful. They take a third rate "star" and tell dirty jokes. Is there anyone left who could make a decent roast?

  • I wish gilbert gottfried had been one of the roasters..

  • A " Rip off " that made her a lot of money in those days!

  • Vance was a huge talent. Yes, of course Lucy is an icon, but so much of her best work rests with this incredible "Straight Man."

  • @justjack...right on

  • back when people were really stars, not overpaid, no-talent trash!

  • @justjack78 AMEN when stars were real stars and the music was music!

  • @justjack78 yes and amen haha lol.

  • @Security1o1, really? How do you know?

  • Back in the golden olden days we were so much more superior than today. No one respects, no one is classy , no one appreciates , no one this , no not that .... I like old movies and the actors but seriously.......

  • why was Dean Martin always drunk?

  • @ArtisticTrepr yes...

  • what year is this!!?

  • Wow, nowadays the roasts are ALOT meaner LOL

  • LOOK at all the legends on that stage!!!Lucy was not a gd communist!!!how many times must it be told???she signed up because of her GRANDFATHER!!!she never followed any communist ideology!!!She was the head of a major studio, sat on the boared of pepsi and was a multi-millionair!!And all you STAR TREK fans can thank lucy..it was a Dezilu production.

  • @beatlestoneful ALOT OF KKK MEMBERS SIGNED UP BECAUSE OF THEIR FATHERS AND GRANDFATHERS - THEY ARE STILL MEMBERS EVEN IF THEY DIDNT WEAR THE SHEETS AND PILLOWCASES OR BURNED CROSSES OR BEATEN OR KILLED BLACKS - HOW MANY THINK ANY LESS OF JOHN WAYNE FOR BEING A KKK MEMBER ?

  • classic roasting. No penis or vagina coming out of peoples mouth like that Italian comedia, dont even know her name.

  • @entyceit I BET THEY DIDNT MAKE JOKES ABOUT HER BEING A COMMUNIST; WHICH SHE WAS

  • @allenwood100 nothing wrong being a communist.

  • @entyceit IT WAS THE WORST THING TO BE BACK IN LUCYS DAY - THE JIM CROW SEGREGATION ERA

  • @allenwood100 LUCY WAS NOT A COMMUNIST!1 that was determined nearly 60 yrs ago! GAFL!!

  • @crisvanfan LUCY ADMITTED IT HERSELF; I SAW HER COMMUNIST MEMBERSHIP CARD

  • @allenwood100 she and her brother registered because their grandfather insisted. but she was not a communist. if you check your history it was resolved yrs ago. desi made a famous quote

" the only thing red about lucy is her hair, and even that is not legit"

  • @entyceit Lisa Lampanelli?

  • All this Lucille Ball footage is making me cry :(

  • Television as a performance art is over, and it has been for over 15 years. The real talents are either gone or retired from showbiz.

  • "You probably don't remember me."

  • In all probability she's actually speaking the truth here - there was supposedly no love between them - in Vivian's contract that she had to be X # of pounds overweight, bla bla bla - as much as I loved I love lucy as a kid - she was simply a shrewd woman - with dubious talent - spell it any way you like

  • @sfbuddie I read a book about Vivian Vance and she seems to have made a good living working with Lucy.

  • @adelgado75

Im sure - interesting article in todays NY Times you might appreciate - re: the 'girl writer' -

  • I love Vivian! I love Lucy wouldn't be I Love Lucy with out her and William Frawley!!

  • Vivian Vance.............Hi 5.................

  • "hurry up with that coffee Desi" lol XD

  • Ethel was so funny - I love her! She and William Frawley were a huge part of that program, they all four had to be together to make it what it was and of course the writers, directors, etc., the whole thing was just special!

  • pause at :23 LOL love that smile always!

  • "Hurry up with that coffee Desi!"

Lol :) Sounds just like Lucy! :)

  • These old roasts were WAY better than the newer ones; there's no comparison.

  • Lisa Lampenelli should take some pointers from the way these true stars roasted people. You don't have to be vulgar and shocking to be funny.

  • 3 people have absolutely no sense of humor. Viv is fantastic!

  • who would thought that vivian vance was a cold hearted bitch

  • @security1o1 she was supposed to that's why its called a roast

  • @alekakai my comment was about her response about the death of william frawley

  • Comment removed

  • @88fredmcfred It was an act. Actually, he drank very rarely.

  • @robert3302 not true. i worked backstage at a casino where martin performed.. he was drunk.

  • loved them both <3

  • Those were the days when people actually were funny.

  • I think some of you are confusing the rivalry that Vivian Vance had with William Frawley, they really couldn't stand eachother. I have never heard of bad blood between lucy and vivian.

  • The idea that Vivian had to remain overweight by contract is false. Look it up on Snopes. She apparently dieted and tried losing weight all the time. People love to make up rumors..

  • REPOST What nonsense. You know nothing about Lucy or Vivian. I worked with Lucy writers Bob Carrol and Madelyn (Pugh) Davis, when I wrote on the "Alice" series. Bob and Madelyn produced "Alice" and they often shared their Lucy experiences. Lucy and Vivian were great friends. And of course anyone who knows the true biography of Lucille Ball knows she was cleared of the "Communist" charge by none other than J. Edgar Hoover. Get your facts right LilCHuckWOodenHea! ...Rowby

  • @seonfox Um, before trying to get your facts straight? Try not to lie. How could you write for the "Alice" TV show when it came out 10 years before you were even born? And how could you work with Pugh and Carroll when she passed away early this year and Carroll's been dead for 4 years? Nice try, though.

  • @HowieMistress Did you not see the words "REPOST?" someone else wrote it- I reposted it. Adurr.

  • @seonfox No need for the 'adurr' comment. You could have just told me what you meant and left it at that.

  • @cheeriosinabowl

They only did for the tv.....My mom is like the biggest I Love Lucy fan and she bought a book on Lucy and she talks about their friendship

  • Its funny cause Vivian hated lucy....funny how people can be two faced even in hollywood

  • @littlestangel91

I always thought Viv and Lucy were good friends?

  • @littlestangel91 Especially in Hollywood! Actors must have many, many faces ...

  • DINO!!

  • ACTUALLY, IF YOU LOOK AT THE E! TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY OF VIVIAN VANCE, SHE COULD BARELY STAND LUCILLE BALL. SHE WAS PUSHED TO SO MUCH AS GOING TO THERAPY OVER HER....

  • @tony265982 i dont get why.

  • is a roast when you make fun of a person??

  • @bearbrien

    Always just for fun.

  • @LaffTherapy well yeah..of course

  • @LaffTherapy b4 they got super super raunchy:)

  • @bearbrien seriously. the roasts today just cannot compare.

  • @bearbrien YES! THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF A ROAST!

  • @suzannemoiraregis ok ok.....

  • Just curious. I've heard the stories that William F. was rude and mean to Ms. Vance but do we know this to be true and factual?. Had Lucy or Vivian stated this themselves? Someone clarify for me please. Thanks!

  • @MaryMRevis they despised each other.

  • Did she die that year? What year was this filmed?

  • @ahmad123987 I believe in 1979?

  • @ahmad123987 @MaryMRevis This aired in 1976 as part of the "CBS Salutes Lucy: The First 25 Years".

  • I love Vivian Vance

  • Ah...I love old TV shows, it's funny when people ask me how my family and I survive with out television, I say it's simple...I watch old TV shows, like I Love Lucy, (I have all the seasons) Full House, ETC. And things like that, not like the crap on TV now-a-days. :/ I mean really? Not everyone has to love NEW NEW everything, you don't go along with something just because "Everyone else does it, or everyone else likes it!!" I don't care, I LOVE LUCY FTW, ALWAYS. <3 :)

  • I can't believe she hated William Frawley. Ever since I couldn't watch I love Lucy the same :/

  • @nummzy123 Well William Frawley added a lot to the hatred ya' know. He hated her just as much as she hated him, maybe more. He would constantly bring her down by calling her fat, ugly, a waste. But it really is too bad that they hated eachother, it showed slightly in their acting in "I Love Lucy", but it was always fun when they would call eachother "Sweetie, Honeybunch, Sugar." Names like that. But as I said, it really was too bad that they hated eachother.

  • @intothewoods4 When Will died, Vivian got the news at a restaurant and was so happy she ordered champagne for everyone.

  • @sweeney60 This may sound cruel, but that is so-ooo Epic!

  • @intothewoods4 Not really, he was an ass to her, and got what he deserved. Right on Vivian

  • @intothewoods4 Yeah ...

  • Hard to watch this woman knowing all the undeserved animosity that she held for William Frawley. He was a wonderful actor and person and she hated him because she felt she deserved to work with a younger, better looking actor. Viv and Bill were offered a spin off show after I Love Lucy and She turned it down because she refused to work with him. He even had a bit part in The Lucy Show later on and Viv wouldnt be a part of it. Her actions toword him speak volumes. Don't care for her as a person.

  • @dannybex I was wondering if she was just "joke" roasting her.

  • Comment removed

  • @dannybex yeah, I know, I actually heard about that. It's quite terrible. But, you know, on the show, they were friends

  • I don't mean to be stupid, but is she just joking about Lucille or not? Because those were some rather ill-mannered comments.

  • @soccerguy325 It's a ROAST, but seriously, some of those 'jokes' were close to the truth. Vance was told to gain weight, was not allowed to look 'too pretty', as Ball was the star...so she may have held a few mild grudges, and probably deserved more pay.

  • @soccerguy325

vivian and lucille were friends but they had ups and downs - the downs being a power struggle: Lucille Ball was known for her "professionalism" and prefering risking personal relationships for the sake of a show. For one, she was the one who always forced Vivian to remain "plump" for the show. Vivian couldnt lose any weight - she hated the way she looked on the show - and that put tension btwn her and lucy. also, when vivian was late once, lucy supposedly used the F word!

  • @soccerguy325 Yes, she was just joking. The point of roasting someone is to make ill-mannered jokes but it's all in good fun. From what I gather, they were really good friends and that's what makes it even funnier and permissible, even. No one takes offence because they are just jokes, even if they are based on some truth.

  • vivian vance is so talented, she would have been great in musicals

  • I Love Ethel !!!!

  • "I can't go on the subway in my blue jeans!"

my how times have changed. I know my ILL fans will get the quote.

  • @zamusicza Lucy with a LOVING cup on my head I hardly think anybody'll be staring at your blue jeans!!

  • Woooooow LOL X D

  • Ginger Rogers at the end! They were cousins or something, weren't they?

  • @princessjoots I think they were just old freinds. They were roommates in their early days of hollywood.

  • That's so true!! What the hell happen to that??!!

  • This was back when people had class.

  • @ClefDeDavid88 NOT REALLY! You would be surprised to know how rude and how much of a mean dirty old bitch vivian vance was. This was back when people "had class" on television. People were always as rude as they are now, you just see it more on tv.

  • @ClefDeDavid88 Totally agree with you about Betty White....can the "Im old an say young things;' jokes stop? PLEASE???

  • @ClefDeDavid88 You got that right.

  • OMG! i love viv! she is amazing on i love lucy! im her biggest fan...lol i no she is gone but she was amazing!!

  • real entertainers!!!. I love them. Nowadays we dont have talented actors just the dirty and ordinary type

  • @hypnomedusa Aside from Betty White, whose recent stints on SNL and Superbowl commercials seemed more like novelty (as in "look at the cool old lady") than legitimate appreciation, I can't think of any major stars over the age of 60 who command as much reverence and respect as people like Bob Hope, Lucy, Dean, etc. When I was a kid, these people were still very vital and famous. Today, it seems like they've all been replaced by dimwitted and forgettable reality 'personalities'

  • @ritter89 So very true.

  • @ritter89 I can, Meryl Streep

  • @ritter89 Agreed! These people were actually funny too. I can't think of many entertainers these days that actually make me laugh!

  • @ritter89 That's so true! It's a youth-driven society now with no roots and no reverence for the elders and valuing what they know and what they've experienced. Well said, ritter89...

  • @89bhs

    I have to agree.

I grew up watching these types of shows.

When I look back on them now I realize how sex, sleaze and youth driven the shows of today are.

There is no substance today. No self respect.

  • @ritter89 yep...things are always WAY better in the olden days. WAAAAAAAAAY better. And Betty White. Hell, all she did was win an Emmy.

  • I wish they still did roasts like this. Hilarious but still classy. The ones from today couldn't possibly compare.

  • That was so great too bad it was short i would have loved to hear more from Vivian

  • So beautiful and funny. Yes. She seems to always get the short end. Maybe she just wasn't that interested. Whatever, She was brilliant.

  • Anyone know if Gale Gordon appeard on this roast. I thought he did if my memory is correct.. I'd love to hear what had to say

  • @1tallguy49 You can see him briefly at 48 on this video.

  • "How are you Harry,Hurry up with that coffee Desi" That was the funnest part of the video.

  • This was truly awesome! I used to watch Lucy and the shows she was in over the years, and it was great seeing Vivian Vance in her elder years still sharp as a tack :) Her comedy was still very much in check even into her older age.

These are the true people of comedy in their time. No profanity or strong sexual overtones. Just occasional hints, all done in good taste.

    These were the days :)

  • its Marie Barone Lol !

  • yeah..viv again getting the short end of it. its not like she was stand up comic.. or even lucys best friend. she was just on the most famous tv show along with lucy..so they threw hera bone and gave her a litte appearance as the fans would like it... i love her and wish she did have more to say

  • <--- Just reviewed a biography on Vivian Vance on my channel =)

  • I usually only sign in to leave comments on videos that I liked and this happens to be one of them. Hilarious.

  • What a treat! thank you for posting!

  • @lilchuckywoodenhead.. communist don't produce for themselve a multimillion dollar companies . moron

  • Did you know that Vivian HATED Lucy and pretended for years to be he buddy ? She had to do it to get the work.... There was a stipulation in Vivian's contract that if Viv lost more than ten pounds from the time of the contract being signed she would be fired. Lucy needed to make sure Viv stayed "FRUMPY" so she would not out shine her....... ALSO Lucy listed herself on a voter registration as a Communest which indeed she was.

  • @LilChuckyWoodenHead

What nonsense. Get your facts right LilCHuckWOodenHea! ...Rowby

  • @rowbyrowby .... I heard Viv with my own ears in 1979. Before Viv died she confesses to pretending to be Lucy's Pal and REALLY hating her. Lucy was a vile and nasty woman. Her on set fights with Desi were well known in the Hollywood Click. By the way her voter registration card was on the website The Smoking Gun" for a long time and she filled out "COMMUNEST" as party affiliation. Now who am I to believe ?... J Edgar Hoover the transvesite homo OR... my own eyes ???... Chucky Knows STUFF !

  • @LilChuckyWoodenHead

Sorry, LilCHuckyWOodenHea, your "own ears" story from Viv is as inaccurate as your claim that Lucy was a communist.

    ...Rowby

  • @rowbyrowby I am sorry to damage the Glitter Studded view you had of your hero, but the TRUTH will set you free. Bye the way.... Did you know William Frawley who played Viv's husband on the show REFUSED to ever speak to her unless it was strickly work related ? On Viv's first day on the set of I love Lucy she asked a producer who was going to play her husband. He told her William Frawley . Viv said, "That old fart could be my Grand Dad, Is that the BEST you could do ?..... Frawly heard her.

  • @LilChuckyWoodenHead

Viv's issues with Frawley are well known. I am only addressing your claim that Viv hated Lucy. Your statement that Lucy was a communist invalidates any so-called "personal" knowledge you claim to have about Viv's true feelings about Lucy. I do not have a glitzy vew of Lucy. It is well known that she was a tough person to work with. She has tough on everyone including herself. The results of her toughness resulted in the ongoing popularity of "I Love Lucy" to this day.
