  • where can i find the rest of the lecture? I clicked on link but couldnt find it, and cant afford the book right now? Thanks

  • @milesgordon8 I actually didn't upload the rest of the talk, but you can find more similar Dharma talks at kadampa.org, hope this helps !:D

  • i've found Seneca's teachings on anger very helpful, i tend to prepare for anything that might make me angry.

  • Wow, nothing but the truth. As if he's been in my head lol I have had a somewhat dangerous anger issue (not too dangerous) but really unpleasant. Recently though -- Especially after learning more about Rastafarianism, Buddhism, & Many positive philosophies. Have shaped my new self into something more positive. I still have work to do, I will not deny. But I have just now written my mission on my page on which road I am willing to take.

  • So beautiful man, thanks for sharing! :]

  • I found this a very important video. continue the good works. I think anger is one of the most harmful defilement of the mind. I am continually trying to subtiute loving kindness for anger. Unfortunately not always successfully.

  • I feel u cannot have anger without first having fear, and with that..I feel I become both, and that is something 2 research within myself. I so thank u 4 sharing ur video..it's educational.

  • Great video and thought provoking. sometimes I think anger can come from dissatisfaction with life. When people think about the things that they lack in life. Maybe people should focus more on what they have and appreciate the things they have in life rather than on the things that they don't have in order to be more happy. Thanks for sharing this video. :)

  • Yeah I agree! Thanks as always for your comments ! :D

  • how do you learn to "accept with a happy mind"? cos lord knows I'm trying but it's

not easy. could you make another vid

giving practical advice on how to achieve

    this joyful acceptance?

  • Sure! I'll work on making one soon! :D Thanks for watching!!

  • i've expierienced when there is something lovely about the one attacking me my mind is able to refuse the angry state but when i cannot detect lovelyness in some respect and so cannot imagine a virtual harmony the anger is likely to take over though unwanted and considered unnecessary and counterproductive.

  • My mind has been created to make me unhappy - that is it's job. It's job is to trick me into being upset - angry = frustrated and not simply being. In the quiet, non attached state of meditation, I am able to really go into the state of quiet awareness. Most all of the rest of my mind is monkey...monkey mind - all over the place... in trying to dislodge my peace......

Thank you for having this site. It is my first response in youtube.

  • Thanks so much for your thoughts josan, welcome to YouTube! :)

  • I agree. Acceptance is initially the key to responding appropriately to any given thought or action. Perhaps...whats optimal is that we contemplate the origin of the thought/action prior to choosing our response. Peace always feels better than anger/frustration: on that basis alone i agree with this video for the most part.

  • Hey nice to hear from you Socrates, been a long time! Thanks for your thoughts! :)

  • Beautiful. Thanks for posting this Gerald.

  • like with most things... "Too much" acceptance is not a good thing. All emotion can be a distraction... the key is to keep what's needed to be properly motivated to do what needs doing.

  • 98% agreed, thanks for your thoughts!

  • This interesting, however, could you give an example of when too much acceptance is a bad thing?

  • good question

  • immendham: Patience acceptance is the way to solve our inner problem of anger.(i.e protecting our mind from being disturbed or becoming unhappy). At the same time, we also need to take practical steps to resolve the outer problem of say - bad practice at work, abusive frined/boss etc. With this udnerstanding of outer and inner, we can never be practising patience 'too much'. For an example, you can make complaint about say unfair practice at work, whilst remaining inwardly patient.

  • "If we blame our problems on other people/phenomena and on that basis, then we develop anger, develop a mind thinking-if that person didnt exist I wouldnt have this problem" Thanks Gerald for this video.

  • No problem man, nice to hear from you! :)

  • yea, we are responsible for are actions, and can never be forced into doing anything by other people, unless we are threatened by abuse or violence.

  • My other comment is doing to usual YT thing of not being visible, but as an afterthought, perhaps I'll do a video on the topic of anger to clarify. :)

  • Cool, would love to hear.

  • Actually anger has a valuable and reasonable purpose, without it ever becoming attack. It's an agent of change, though because of its firelike nature it can be very difficult to see to the heart of. If one can discover its core and calmly use that energy to communicate it can be a highly purposeful and productive tool. There is no emotion or state of being that is meaningless, rather that we may not have learnt how to 'read' it.(more)

  • I would agree it is often not a sign that there is something 'wrong' outside, more a clue of what we contain, so it can be a wonderful gift to enable us to free ourselves from fears and confusions, but equally to have an effect on the world beyond our individuality. I'm not sure acceptance of all that is without contemplation or understanding of our role and part is terribly helpful.

  • Hey thanks for your thoughts !:D Anger is the source of so much destruction, its what fuels domestic abuse, causes war, gets people to kill each other, its an inherently destructive mind, that is the cause of profound suffering. Allowing something so profoundly harmful to stay within one's consciousness and flirting with the idea that it may some how be useful to both us and our society is something I'd have to humbly yet strongly disagree with, regardless if it provides some minor benefit cont

  • its tendency to be something horrible out weights any small level of benefit. Thanks again for your thoughts Lorelella, nice to hear from you! :)

  • It's not a question of flirting with anything, it's a question of mental health and an understanding that all we contain can be valuably used. Suppressing or denying any aspect causes the very things you cite. Anger is indeed a cause for much destruction, for two simple reasons:

1 Humanity is not taught how to use its emotions appropriately.

2 It fails to see we are all part of the same thing, that there is no enemy.

It is only destructive because of the mistaken belief all is dualistic...

  • He talks later that its not about suppressing or denying these states of mind, but realizing the negative aspects of them and not allowing to occupy space within your consciousness. I've renounced many more primitive states of minds and I haven't suppressed them but simply replaced them with healthier, productive, and compassionate states of mind. Brain maliability allows us to do exactly that. Replacement not suppresion.
