  • I remember that music from "Winning" and TVS's College Basketball.

  • @ebf1957 Thanks for the clues. This is indeed the theme song from the 1969 movie "Winning" composed by Dave Grusin.

  • in 1979 they had theme music l ike this before the movie "the swimmer" with burt lancaster. this is not the same music. the one i heard packed a punch.

  • Man, looking back at this shit reminds me how television broadcasting was so irrelevant back then and is especially now.

  • @jazzfan19605

Are you kidding me? Network TV had all the power in the world. There were only 3 main networks controlling the media and viewership was way higher than it is today. That is what people did when they came home, sat around the TV all night. TV was far more powerful than it is today, they had a completely captive audience.

  • What year was this logo from ?

  • This reminds me of WEWS' original 1972 "Catch 5" promo more than WABC's 4:30 Movie open. It had to have been produced at the exact same time, if not earlier (my second guess is sometime between 1968 and 1969).

Also, when did WEWS retire the "M$M" name and aligned all their movie airings under the "Movie 5" umbrella? I'd like to say it was sometime in 1986...

  • That music was funky!

  • any idea on the music? reg tilsley? i would really like to know.

  • I may have heard this music myself, on WOR-TV, as the theme for their nightly "Late Movie."

  • This Million Dollar Movie opening was suppose to be use for the Philippines opening of Million dollar movies with the S. On ABS-CBN 2 but they use the background Hollywood area and the floating of the Million Dollar Movies logo. In 1986 to 1994 until the CGI affects from ABS-CBN was use in 1995 to 1999? But i forgot already. And now turns into SUNDAYS BEST

  • This when latenite television was at its best nothing elaborate just plain good fun.

  • Cool that you got a recording of this with no talking over it- I want to take this and some bumpers and commercials and edit them with some recent movies to give them the Million Dollar Movie effet.

  • Why do they call it the "Million Dollar Movie"?

  • The title - which originated in 1954 when WOR-TV in New York first debuted it - referred not to the average budget of the films being shown, but rather the aggregate revenue taken in every time such films were aired over a week. I.I.N.M., WEWS was one of hundreds of stations that bought the C&C/Movietime package of RKO films that initially made up the core of "M$M."

  • Another story about the "M$M" title origins was a reference to the amount paid by General Teleradio (predecessor to RKO General) head Thomas F. O'Neil in 1954 for a package of 30 films from the Bank of America that made up the original basis for the series - $1.3 million.

  • Elements of the "4:30 Movie" from New York can be seen here.

  • WXYZ Detroit (in the day, also an ABC O&O, today a Scripps ABC affiliate like WEWS) also had a 4:30 movie with very similar graphics (but a different theme song). It briefly switched to "4:00 Movie" before being dropped.

  • I totally forgot about this intro, thanks for posting this.I remember I liked the way the chair rotated and changed color. The music kinda reminds me of Rocky.

  • I can remember this after a Friday or Saturday Night 11:30 p.m. movie on TV5 in the '80's. The intro was somewhat creepy to me as it was late at night (1:30-2 a.m.) and after the Million Dollar Movie was over, it was SIGN OFF! The chills are memorable, but great clip of an interesting memory.

  • YES!!!...exactly!

Just on a whim I decided to see if anything form here awas posted on the Tube and lo and behold...

I SOO remember the Million Dollar Movie...that I wasn't supposed to be up to watch but at times I was...they always aired the hidden gems that folks forgot about...like Harper Valley PTA or old b&w movies classics.

  • Sounds (and looks) like late 1960's/early '70's - would I be close?

  • This was run with movies in the 70's through the mid 80's. This clip was from a movie in 1985.

  • Holy cow! I remember this intro!
