IMO, there is no such thing as "pay money, PRESTO, learn language". Hard work and dedication must go into mastery (which Phelps SHOULD know from swimming). He is just going through the motions. But if, for example, he refused to go to the next "window" until he mastered the extremely challenging tones (there are ways you can "compare" what you sound like to the native speaker), that would be just one of many ways to accomplish that. He just seems to want to collect his endorsement check.

I think the issue is not so much that Rosetta Stone sucks per se, I think that Michael Phelps clearly does not exploit the full potential of the program -- and the RS rep thinks that because Phelps is famous, the whole world will want to buy the program (which, upon reflection, does not speak well about the company). However, I am using RS for another difficult language (Arabic), and I think it is extremely helpful. The key (for me, at least), is RS is only ONE TOOL in an arsenal of tools.

This is why Rosetta Stone is whack. The way he pronounced "juice" (guo zhi) and later "this girl is drinking water" (zheige nu haizi zai he shui) was totally off. Nobody would understand what he was saying. He completely omits the verb "drink" (he). But still, Rosetta Stone just lights up and confirms it, making it seem like he's pronouncing it perfectly!

@claton95 Rosetta Stone might be a good supplement, but it's insufficient on its own. It's pretty expensive for a supplement, too! So, yes, I'd avoid it. Another problem is that it uses the same vocabulary for every language (or at least it did last time I checked). So you learn how to say "fork" regardless of the language, even though for Chinese you might need the word "chopsticks." I'd do Chinesepod (which you can sample for a week or two for free).

This is a good way to start, as this is the first lesson and he would be there all day trying to get it right. As you get and ear for things you can adjust the settings to make it less it quite strict. After using Rosetta Stone for 6 months my Chinese pronunciation is well recognized in Beijing.

I'm a Chinese. I'd say his pronunciation is good if it is his first try (without like days' practice). The only one that is a bit far off is Juice/果汁, sound like 寡汁 (果 vs 寡 guo vs. gua). His Chinese is better than my English when I first learned it.
