Bill's version was inspired by Dylan's performance of the traditional Handsome Molly on the bootleg "Gaslight Tapes." I had scored a copy of that bootleg (long before the record company issued Dylan's "bootlegs" as a series) and Bill and I spent a couple days in Chicago in the late 80s listening to the whole thing. Followed his career from the 1970s, long before he'd cut an album, and when his only vehicle was his thumb (actually, he used his guitar case as a sign for destination). Sometime 1991(?), Rolling Stone magazine reviewed "Inside" (four stars!), and Bill's right thumb soon got a little warmer. His music began to sell on a national level. I'll never forget seeing him in all those old clubs; honing his craft.

Yeah, I know what you mean. "Handsome Molly" is a traditional song, but the only thing Bill kept is the title and some of the chorus. The rest is Bill.
