It is best to set boundaries around bullies and abusers.

What a great question. The answer may be a bit more complex though. The issue with bullies is usually they don’t know they are bullies.

It’s usually not within their conscious awareness.

And when we try and make them aware that they are being bullies or bullying, usually they ‘attack’ by being defensive.

Some suggestions would be to either tell the bully that they’ve said or done something abusive and ask them to stop doing that.

If they listen to you and stop doing the abusive bullying behaviour, good.

But if they don’t listen to you and keep doing the bullying behaviour then you need to disengage, which means to remove yourself from spending time with them to protect yourself from further abuse.
