here's the thing...babs doesn't have the best chops...she's great, don't get me wrong, but her fabulousness is that she turns every song into a 3 act play...she's is maybe the best at this. long live la streisand...also it's her ability to choose the best songs ever written. imho. peaceout.
Being Alive is not meant to be sung in this manner. It's a life-altering revelation, not a fun jazzy tune about love. The song loses all its emotional impact this way.
@stevesg92 What? That a song ending a cynical show about a profoundly lonely man trying to deal with his commitment issues, constructed out of a previous song (Happily Ever After) that ripped through the concept of marriage as a false ideal that made you miserable, with lyrics like "Somebody hold me too close / somebody hurt me too deep" and "make me alive / make me confused / mock me with praise / let me be used / vary my days" could possibly lose meaning being performed as fun? That's BS?
i think that this is one of the most beautiful medleys! and generally Timeless is a great concert! could you please upload ''Lover, Come Back to Me'' too?
My mom bought her album home after seeing the movie "A Star is Born" us kids listened to that album until we wore it out! (the only black kids blasting Streisand in the 70's in our neighborhood) LOL!!
Got a little older and discovered "Yentyl" loved it! war out THAT Cd (it's all on my Mp3 ) haven't started looking into these "standards until recently, and I tell ya, I know I'm getting more mature because my taste in music has changed drastically and I can now appreciate great music like this!
@atlasshrugged2u I love your comment and I can relate. I was the other black kid blazing Babs in the 70's. When I heard Stoney End I remember thinking, "...who is this dame?" That's when my stalking began. I think it's just a testament that pure, God given talent transcends all races, religions, ages, social classes, etc. I'm certain there was, and still is, a diverse group of folks listening to Streisand...just maybe not as loud as you and I. But, as my granny used to say, "I ain't shame!"
Barbra, you do it like no other...like no other...every word/syllable expresses emotion...thank you..and thank you to the one who posted this clip. Much gratitude!!
Bullshit. Ms. Streisand wouldn`t have sung it if she didn`t have the feeling for it. What I see is time constraint. They were trying to get a lot in before starting the second act on New Years Eve 1999! Hence, the phenomenal background effects. Turn of the Century. Let`s see you pull it off.
i love barbra more than one should , have every thing she ever did and more , but i have to admit i didn't like this concert at times. I felt her verbrato seemed off , but in saying that i was at the sydney concert and it didn't sound the same. so maybe it was pressure of the 1st couple of concerts and trying to hard, age or something else who can say. everyone has there off day i guess.
the woman was 58 here... can u imagine what would be left of mariah's, celine's or whitney's (that last one is already gone...) at that age? i fell in love with these songs when i heard Barbra sing it in this concert so i think it was FABULOUSLY done. She seemed more in her zone and relaxed in this concert than the one from 1994. BRAVO
@DrWill Well, yes, but when all you have to do all day is sit around enjoying your ocean view, petting your cats and drinking green tea,I would think it wouldn't be that difficult to keep your voice in shape.
@halaluani ...And it never ceases to amaze ME,some people have to live in this perpetual naive state of idealizing people and the world. To me, "growing up" requires letting go of simplistic and shallow understandings, and embracing the complexity and nuance that is life.I can certainly appreciate all of Ms Streisand's gifts, but I can also see how her long standing life of privilege, has made her complacent and boring.Perhaps if you stopped dismissing others so quickly, you might learn something.
@tet43 You have nothing to teach in this way. Keeping a voice in top shape takes time and work as does a stellar career. Her "life of privilege" was earned. Every penny of it. Face it, you're jealous. But you have to mock instead because it would hurt too much to face the truth.
@halaluani Yes, I am jealous.Jealous of the fact that my vocal cords weren't aligned the same as hers.Face it, she was just ambitious. Her voice did the rest.So "earned every penny?"...um, not so sure.I find it rather amusing that you're protecting a woman you don't know, who couldn't care less what either of us think.....Um maybe, it's time to get some REAL friends.
@tet43 You're making assumptions -- just as you did about how Barbra spends her days. "Vocal chord alignment"?? LOL! There is no such thing as "vocal chord alignment". You seem to specialize in making things up as you go along. I'm done now. I'll just sit back and watch you continue to discredit yourself.
@halaluani Fine,. I'm not a singer, but something tells me that you could understand what I meant.Talk about making assumptions. You had me defined, categorized and dismissed in your mind the minute you read my comment without even one question as to MY intent.Perhaps you should look to your own glass house of assumptions and allow others their opinions because,as shocking as this may seem, not everyone is wrong because they have a different point of view.from yours.BTW- BS is STILL boring!(LOL)
@halaluani Just for the record, why are you so invested in protecting Barbra's reputation from any stanger who doesn't glorify her? You knowCatherine, it's really kindof creepy! Please make some friends.
@halaluani One last request.Since you are all knowing,it is my understanding that it is the loose or taut vibration between the 2 vocal cords that cause the sound from our mouths that we call singing. As these 2 vocal cords are attached to the throat, how is it that they are not "aligned" in a certain way to produce BS's singing or mine? Please, enlighten me! If you cannot refute my definition, I think my point will be made.Good Luck!
Please Celine has the most consistant and powerful vocals and her voice is as good as ever and amazing vocal endurance (700 sold out shows in Vegas) and 2 world tours not to mention that she is back in Vegas, no other singer has Celine's vocal range and endurance, trust me Celine will still blow everyone away when she hits 58 years of age.
As for Whitney her comeback was a real farce, she can't even sing 1 song without being in vocal trouble.
As for Whitney you are right unless a miracle happens will her vocal cords, she will disappear for good, it's sad though cause in the 80's she was considered to be on her way as one of the best ever, not too tragic when you consider that she has dozens of millions of dollars to support herself with for the rest of her life if she can't sing anymore
Barbra's ability to interpret her own renditions of her recordings in such an uncanny way while all the time remaining an artist with a chance of the unexpected flourish or improvisation on a note and not the exact recording. She makes it through this song just fine, and in the recorded history of Barbra's live concerts, this is a natural progression of where that artist would be when say, you compare it to the live recording in Central Park - it' a beautiful sight to have beheld and watched...
here's the thing...babs doesn't have the best chops...she's great, don't get me wrong, but her fabulousness is that she turns every song into a 3 act play...she's is maybe the best at this. long live la streisand...also it's her ability to choose the best songs ever written. imho. peaceout.
