Happy Hundreth Birthday, Mr. Johnson - 8 May 2011
You inspired so many.....Clapton, Keith, and so many more to chop wood with their axes. But mostly, you inspired me cause I know you didn't make a deal but rather worked your ass off.......no shortcuts. Thanx Pops.
@cinnomonsinner nope but partly...Howling Wolf says "If you aint got money, you got the blues. If you aint got money and you cant pay your house rent, you sure got the blues. If you aint got money and you cant pay your rent and cant pay your food, damn sure you got the blues. But you thanking even. Anytime you thankin' even, you've got the blues"
Incredibly mysterious man. Died aged 27 years before his records became famous. And now we all know the words to Crossroads. Possibly the most influential person in music history. He was one of the first blues musicians and without him the music world would actually be so boring. If he suddenly came back from the dead we would all be jumping on him and he'd be like WTF I'm just some guy when he played a vital role in the modern world.
There's an alternate take of this song, but he does it different, faster, a real Rock&Roll prototype. This slower take is more famous 'cos it's more lyrical and soulful, but the other one is real fun. The song is about being impotent (possibly because of Vodoo) with the phonograph that doesn't work, "the needle that got rusty", "we played in on the sofa, we played it upside the wall" as great metaphors for sex. Great singing & guitar-playing, great poetry. Thanks for posting this
Im 18 years old and I have a lot of appreciation for what this man did for Blues music and Rock and Roll. I dont know if I fully believe the fact that he sold his soul to the devil. But to learn how to play like this in 6 months is hard to believe..And take a look at the white object to the right of him..Resembles something doesnt it? haha
im so happy that there are still good ears in the world, not pudding brained androids that chase after the trends., Not the essence and soul of the sounds and words. True blues is the only reason i got married.
Great song! The way he sings has influenced everyone. I even hear Snoop in it, "Played 'side the wall". The way he sings just sits in your head, and every blues player has tried it after him. This song mixes sexual innuendo with a record player, which shows his genious, musicians didn't do that in 1936.
do a search for this "Eric Clapton Robert Johnson Sessions " it the 1st video that comes up 5:42 and see what clapton saids about him. you will feel better..
@strawberrypicker123 Thank GOD!!! I'm a heavy metal drummer and I always tell people when they say that Elvis started rock and roll that they are crazy!!! ROBERT J!!!!!!! This THE man!!!!! Started it all, for all rock, blues, metal, etc... AWESOME!!! Thanks to whoever posted this!!!!
@mokboh lol I'm a heavy metal drummer too and i say the same thing! :) Must be a thing about drummers, like can pick up the way people feel music better that most others.
@warlordzephyr Damn straight! I get so irritated sometimes by people that are so hell bent on meter, and following the "rules" of writing, time sig's and the like. It always seems to cut you off or put inside this imaginary little box that you dare venture outside of. It's ALL in the "pulse", that bending, and ebb and flow. That's why I love to hear all drummers that are a little "off" time in switching of time segments, because it makes it real and not a machine! Rock on!
@strawberrypicker123 a part of these old blues guys sound was created by the very cheap guitars they used. They were all trebble (high end sound instead of low and deep).....that thin plinkey, plinkey tone. Try to find an old "Harmony Stella" guitar and you'll get that tone
Maybe he had, I would have to hear him live to judge. Too bad, he was unable to record along other instruments - percussion, bass, but I think it's lack of recording techonolgy in those days. Johanson was recording on mechanical phonograph (without electromagnetic pickup), right?
in my opinion thats part of whats so great about these old recordings, almost haunting. Have a listen to preaching blues (up jumped the devil) by robert johnson, notice how he plays rhythm, lead, and sings at the same time. Let me know what you think about that recording, just want you to see in him what so many others do.
@Max0Inq Most likely microphones picked up the sound, it was amplified enough to drive a cutting head (electromagnetic pickup in reverse) and scribed the grooves right then and there. And yes there was no mixing and overdubbing back then it was all in real time.
blues is the music of a mans soul , if he sees the devil in his blues then he is a sad man ,he has suffered but he rises like a pheonix from the ashes of his soul through the blues what a wonderous cycle
The phonograph he is refering too is not the playing kind. He actually means the love(sex) is gone, and she won't even talk too him("my phonograph won't play at all")
Back in the 1930's you would go too jail for recording a song about sex(Black or White), that's why he refers to it as a phonograph.
It is interesting just how old this is, it is called phonograph blues, we are in the age of cell phones. that is pretty long ago, 70+ years!!! GO ROBERT JOHNSON!!
Wanna see something really really scary? I dont know if anyone has ever pointed this out? But, The photo of Mr. Johnson all dressed up...Look to the right of him. Hint: The tuning keys are the teath...look again...makes the hair on the back of your neck rise eh?
Yeah I totally see what you're talking about, that is creepy and some strange coincidence or the devil watching him show off his bought talent, weird. but the teeth thing, they are offset. they're too low and to the side, but i get what you're saying. let me try a different hint though. HINT: THERE IS A CREEPY ASS DEVIL DEMON FACE ON JOHNSON'S LEFT SIDE JUST ABOVE THE HEADSTOCK OF THE GUITAR!!!
Man this guy was a genius!
