  • it just dont get better than this

  • Merry Christmas to all of you! I don't car who likes it! :)

  • Merry Christmas from Indiana. Don't have anything special to say this year LOL.

Just make it a good one and we'll visit again next year.

  • THIS IS VERY GOOD!!!!! LOVE THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!

  • this was my fathers favorite christmas song. he had many versions by various recording artists....but I dont think he ever knew bob hope and marilyn maxwell were the originals.intresting.

  • the image of Bob Hope's tattered beard is funny in itself. The scene with the two Chinese children when he sings "O ling O ling O ling" hurts no one but today would be left out because its considered politically incorrect, when in fact it adds to the song and movie to show America's great diversity back in the 1940's

  • According to a Bob Hope biography I read some years back, this song was to be done as a no-frills straight chorus, but they rightly decided to showcase it. Yes, the bit with the Asian kids is awkward now, but otherwise it is beautifully done.

  • @The1971orange

To my ear, this really would have been incomplete without the instruments. Most kids today are missing out by strictly listening to the same, old music with some guitars, bass, drums and maybe a keyboard. They can't appreciate the beauty of lush orchestral arrangements, complete with brass, woodwinds and bowed strings.

  • That's William Frawley - better known as Fred Mertz. He was really a good singer, intentially not singing "silver bells" correctly.

  • Yes!...THE LEMON DROP KID!...I grew up in Chicago and this was a holiday favorite back in the 60's & 70's...along with MR. SOFT TOUCH, CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT, and MIRCLE ON 34TH STREET !!!!

  • One of my favorite Christmas movies! A timeless Classic!

  • beautiful

  • Gee, remember when this used to be on TV at Christmas? I miss it.

  • 2:09 Bob Hope totally has a racist moment with the two kids coming out of the stereotypical laundromat.

  • I miss hearing the record version of Bob Hope singing Silver Bells on the radio each year as it was when I grew up in the 50s and 60s.

  • I love her no wonder Frank Sinatra had a love affair with her.

  • I love this movie, and this scene is just perfect!

  • That was INCREDIBLY hard to lip synch that song for Marilyn and Bob with all the effects and live action audio. Whew! Even today with ADR, it would be hard to do. And notice how crisp the audio is. Masterful!

  • This version became a very famous recarding for Bob Hope and he sang this song at the end of all his Christmas specials. When TV was TV

  • This is my all-time favorite Christmas movie. No contest.

  • @LordVeron i gotta agree with you especially when he is dressed as the old woman

  • why is this video unavailable? i have tried for two years to get this film. it must not be on dvd. another movie ride the pink horse with robert montgomery is also unavailable. every holiday i want to see the lemon drop kid and it is impossible.

  • @steffidude It is on DVD. I own it.

  • The first time the song was heard.

  • You can see Bob stealing from the other kettles for his own donation.

  • I have The Sheet Music with them on the Front from a Million Years Ago before Santa Started Killing People and Fighting Global Warming....Dang it is COLD!

  • Eff Bing. I always preferred Bob.

  • Fred Mertz moonlighting -- I know why his vaudeville career never really took off.

  • That first Santa Claus is Fred Mertz (William Frawley) from "I Love Lucy!!"

  • Thanks so much for this clip from Bob's classic funny movie "the Lemon Drop Kid"....In my opinion, one of the best movies Bob ever made.

  • I got a lump in my throat watching this old clip, brings back a flood of memories of times gone by, Bob Hope, William Frawley and Marilyn maxwell all gone but never forgotten, my favorite Christmas song.

  • lol william frawley is perfect for his part!!

rip to both of you <3

  • Bob Hope, you little rascal!

  • I remember WGN using a clip of this in their "Merry Christmas from WGN Chicago" ads. Back when it was the good thing to do.

  • @1967mustanggta

First time I saw this movie was when I was a kid back in Chicago. I never forgot it, its one of my favorites of the late Bob Hope. Its rather funny to me that I did once live in the two cities mentioned in this movie.

  • How true and sad.....You don't see anyone with that kind of talent and delivery. i love all of Mr. Hope's movies. Thank you for being there for the military and all of us for that matter.

  • How true and sad.....You don't see anyone with that kind of talent now. I'm so fotunate to have been a child of the mid fifties and sixties. I got to see the tail end of real acting talent and comedy and the rock explosion of the early sixties. Cool.

  • WIlliam Frawley is the best.

  • I love this movie, it's my favorite Christmas movie, I remember seeing this when I was a child, I wish they would put this movie on dvd, I WOULD LOVE TO OWN IT.....MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE...FROM CHICAGO!!!

  • @beauty4eyes My dad actually bought this movie for me on dvd about 6-7 years ago. It's still available online, you might look it up so you can buy it. =) I think I wore my dvd out, I watch it all the time! I LOVE IT and this is my favorite scene in the movie.

  • Pure Americana....now lost in the past....

All have a very Merry Christmas!!!

  • I saw this movie when I was about eight years old. Brings back a lot of memories. Bing Crosby had it out but the one I recall was singing cowboy Jimmy Wakely and Margaret Whiting.

  • I saw this movie when I was about eight years old. Brings back a lot of memories. Yes Bing Crosby had a record of it but the one I recall was singing cowboy Jimmy Wakely and Margaret Whiting.

  • im sure, you like the snow at christmas time.. :)..but i like the sun and the hot weather too much..there is nothing like building crosses and castels in the sand...and the ocean is like the Jordan River, where John the Baptist and jesus were been..

  • Marilyn Maxwell is the girl. This is the original version of the song. William Frawley from" I Love Lucy" is the Santa ringing the bell.

  • Lemon Drop Kid was the movie this song is from

  • Bill Frawley aka FRED MERTZ at his very best..

  • This is for personal reasons that go back to childhood, my favorite Christmas movie. Even though it may not rank up there with others critically you can't take from it that it introduced Silver Bells. I even have a 78 of it and it says on it from the motion picture "Lemon Drop Kid" - it is sung by Bing.

  • @1967mustanggta I must agree this is an excellent film and should be recognised more at Christmas time.

Marilyn Maxwell sings this beautifully with Bob Hope.

They don't make films like this anymore a true great.

  • why is this not available at the video stores?

  • i was unaware this was available on dvd. where do i get one??

  • Thank you VERY, VERY much for sharing this with us. I have never seen or heard this song in its original version, and I LIKE IT A LOT!!!!!

  • Love it.

  • what a quality film,I bought this on dvd 5 years ago and watch it every Christmas

  • Our band director just showed us this because we're playing "Silver Bells" & none of us knew what it had to do with "The Lemon Drop Kid" until now! XD

  • I remember this as i kid , i am 30 but my mum and dad always made me watched it and i loved it and laurel and hardy , absolutely genius, so so funny and simple!!!!!

  • The greatest. Thank you.

  • Also pay homage to Damon Runyon, who wrote the story.

Pop quiz---Roll the dice and name the musical inspired by the writings of Damon Runyon.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

  • GUYS AND DOLLS, of course!!!!! Luck be a lady today as well as tonight!

  • God bless

    Leslie Townes 'Bob' Hope

    Jay Livingston

    Ray Evans

  • I remember watching this movie on TV when I was a little kid. Gosh, I get too sentimental when I watch these things. I miss being a kid. Stuff like this reminds me how messed up society is today. Today Paris Hilton and rappers have taken the place of Bob Hope. I guess I was just born 50 years too late.

  • You were born at the right time, I myself was born only in 1970 but luckily my parents were quite old when I was born so I was brought up watching great actors like James Cagney, Bob Hope + many more.

The actors of today will never be remembered like these true greats they might be earning more money nowdays but that ain't everything.

  • I am 19 but my dad has always been a fan of old movies and I know the old stars as well. I have watched Long Long Long Trailer since I was a kid. Yeah, Curly on the 3 Stooges is the best! Gotta love Gracie Allen and George Burns.

  • In decades past the media was so small and centralized that only the very best rose to the top. Nowadays the media is so omnipresent and accessible, anyone can be a star, regardless of whether they have talent or not.

  • I long for an old fashioned Christmas. I love this song. I miss my mom and dad.

  • I used to see this once or twice a summer back in Sacramento during the 70s.

  • I love this movie! One of my favorite Christmas movies that I have on dvd and watch alllll the time! This is my favorite scene in the movie.

  • I agree this is the best scene in the film I love the sound of the bells ringing and Marilyn Maxwell and Bob Hope sing Silver Bells so beautifully.

They don't make films like this anymore.

Those were the good old days.

  • I haven't seen this film in ages. They should show it every year at Christmas, just like White Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life....wonderful film!

  • I am sure most young people do not even know where this song was first sung. Some do-- I know-- but most don't.

  • I agree,, THANKS. this movie should be on at every Christmas. It's a great classic.

  • I LOVE this movie!!! Thanks for posting it! Too bad the young people don't ever watch cool films like this.

  • absolutely-Bob Hope was true genius of

    comedy
