I remember hearing part of this opening in some Hardcore Punk band song and I had no clue what movie it was from then I rented this movie from Netflix and I was like HOLY SHIT!
Dude, do you remember what band did this? It's been a while but watching this clip and then seeing your comment brought back some memories, but I can't remember what band did this for shit. I want to say Black Flag, but I know that's not it. Not The Circle Jerks either. I could swear it was from a band with a guitar player that had a style similar to Greg Ginn though.

What a pathetic nerd... he's the one who's shit, being all nice guy class act, crying like a whimpering baby, weak and whiny, only to lash at her like she was some monstrous bitch whose sole crime is not being attracted to him because he shows no spine at all. He's not a man, he is a momma's boy, and the irony is, he is the one bragging that he is champagne here, but he ends up committing suicide before the first half of the movie is passed. Crappy champagne indeed.
Basically this scene would be amazing as a short film. I mean out of context this scene just brings out everything ive wanted to say when being dumped. Its well scripted....i just love it, reminds me a little of Coffee and Cigarettes
This is the opening scene in the movie. You know as much here as anyone watching the movie for the first time...perhaps your questions are your own answers.
I'm glad you figured out I was being rhetorical...now, your point is well taken, we don't know what happened prior to judge either of the characters, but we have certain clues nevertheless - the guy gets her a very thoughtful present meaning he probably isn't some sort of desperate crazy person. The girl otoh as we see later in the movie has no qualms sleeping with a buff, virile eastern european guy who she persists in socializing with, even after he openly robs from her.
A lot of girls show this behavior; rihanna/chris brown and whitney houston/bobby brown come to mind. Some girls apparently don't mind being jerked around when the jerk in question happens to be conventionally attractive. And the pushee doesn't even have to be superficial to do these things. That's the not so subtle point the movie was making in my humble.
ah yes, I remember the first time I watched this movie. The first thought that came to mind after this scene was "WTF?" And that same WTF thought seemed to be the recurring theme throughout the movie. Such a funny movie that makes you squrim in disbelief.
If you think his behaviour is acceptable, or that she owed him anything for being nice and dating her, you're probably doomed to his same fate. He's actually a detestable character.
I hate that some people will look at this scene and probably think that the girl is the bad one here. The guy is a manipulative jerk with no confidence, not a nice guy.
I concur, and it's depressing that some men will see him as some sort of power crusader against feminism or something. This is NOT in any way a gender issue.
I know his type not because I am a woman, but because I am a man who has dated women like him.
Men and women like this put you in a position of feeling awkward and vulnerable and WHAM! then they turn on you. And they make you feel like you're the bad one.
Do you think he would have acted that way if she hadn't be so inconsiderately cruel to him a few moments before:
"Is it someone else?"
"No, It's just you."
She's not a bad person, as you learn in the movie, but she is a total mess. Mostly you feel sympathy for her, but she makes a LOT of mistakes in relationships and is largely responsible for her own sad lot in life.
ya after she says that theres like a brief moment of like shock and pissed off on the guy's face. so i think from then on he plots the rest of the conversation. such an amazing scene and movie
In my opinion, they were both flawed in this scene. There's nothing sexist about it. She rejected him and used the wrong words to explain her reason. When she said "No, it's just you." He took it the wrong way cause he's an insecure, lonely guy that obviously really liked her. Yet you call him a manipulative jerk, when actually the same could be said about the woman. It's possible she unintentionally lead him on perhaps due to her lack of confidence in breaking it off.
@PoeticRocker Her rejection is proved to be more egregious later on the in the film when she goes out with a guy who robs from her. He was right, she IS shallow. There's no doubt though that the guy has psychological problems, but she's not to know that at this point. She just sees him as all the things he lists, I suppose.
