That's because you are installing the wrong generation. If you installed the 5th generation and it didn't work than you should be installing the 5.5 generation.

Just go to Windows Task Manager: Ctrl Alt Delete and go to itunes and end the program. It should end itunes and it's branches.

hey!! i did all the steps and it had the look of ipod touch. the thing is that once i finish all the steps and i unplog my ipod, i click on music and none of my songs appear, like if they have been erased. if i plug my ipod to my pc again, and open itunes, my ipod music is there. i want to have my songs but at the same time the itouch look. does this has anything to do with my meny ipod options, like controlling ipod's music and videos manually?? pleaase answer, im really desperate!!! thanks...

hey, plug your iPod in and go to your iPod on iTunes. Click "Sync" and it will sync it up. This will allow your new iPod firmware to sync up to your music. I had to do this for mine and it worked :) good luck

what u need to do is hit control+alt+delete and go to the processes tab. end process on anything that is ipod related like itunes, or ipod services..... after this try redoin it and it should work

hey thanks men it actually worked for me. if you get an error when you click WRITE TO IPOD on 5th GEN. just try the 5.5 generation. because it worked for me. IT is the other way around if you tried 5.5 first. thanks again. i hope it helps.

did you put the right firmware cause that happen to mine at first but then you kind of have to mess with it and well just try 5g firmware if it doesnt have the search thing in yo ipod and 5.5 if it does there are some videos in youtube that help you figure it out trust me once you know how to put different files in your ipod its fun

Great tutorial and the firmware upgrade worked brilliantly

A couple of things - it did wipe my music from my ipod but a quick sync sorted that.

However, what do you recommend I do about itunes offering to update the software on my ipod? I usually say yes but I'm assuming if I do it'll install the latest 5.5 gen firmware and over-write my new touch style firmware.

Is that right?

Correct. If you install the update, it will overwrite the firmware. Only do this if you want your ipod back to the way it originally was.
