I don't know if Ms.Waugh hated the increased sales of her prescient novel resulting from the film's release..Inspired by or stolen from ? Waugh's 1948 book - do give Jessica Mitford's "the American Way of Death" a read.
This is one of the funniest scenes from the classic 1964 black comedy "The Loved One". The late great Liberace was BORN to play Counselor Starker! It was adverstised as "a movie with something to offend everyone". But it's all pretty tame by today's standards. I myself find the film often QUITE hilaroius. It has a WONDERFUL cast of many cameo roles by notable show biz faces of the time.
@JubalCalif : A very funny and biting movie, really effective, even today. Tony Richardson caused many issues to the producers, and the film was a commercial failure. It's actually considered as a Camp classic. Great performances by John Gielgud and Rod Steiger, too.
@MrBBJane You are SO right, MrBBJane! It was a flop at the box office when first released (YEARS ahead of its time) but you're right on the button when you commented it's a camp classic...and yes, Mr Gielguld & Mr Steiger's excellent performances are just two of MANY. Wonderful to meet a fellow fan of this fabulous flick! :)

Nice to see that Liberace can play the low-key entertainer role and not campy gaudy role he is famous for.
