  • Speed vs style...for speed I would pick guys like Travis Barker (vomit), Joey Jordison, and Mike Portnoy...(I LIKE portnoy...don't care for Jordison, and hate travis)...but when it comes to style...guys like Keith, Steve Jordan, and Steve Gadd rule. let's not forget Bernard Purdie.

  • Good musicians. A rare thing in today's music environment..............MTV has ruined everything

  • @sweetfly66 I guess thats just my opinion.. this guy obviously has some chops. and alot of people like him. Both our opinions are 100% valid. I just have a different preference. Plus i think the visual style does hand in hand with having a great sound. Some of myy favorite drummers are Danny Carey, Tomas Haake, Navene Koperweis, Vinnie Colaiuta, Royster Jr... Just checkout ther technique. and you'll know what im talking about.

  • I hate the way this guy holds his sticks...

I guess it works for him. But no one learning how to play drums should Ever hold sticks like that. Strokes come the arm and wrist i.e. moeller technique... and not from the fingers. You especially can't control accents by clasping the stick with index and thumb... unless you want joint problems. This is as unattractive as watching a white guy dance.

  • @gorgoroth777 ..... Yours is a very unfortunate stance . Technique , at least on drumset , is different for everyone . You have Keith and his sort of finger control / moeller method ... tommy igoe who keeps everything real low , Gadd who keeps it low as well , Jo Jo Mayer who does it all french , german , moeller , wrist , finger control .... but the most importantly , you are using your eyes to evaluate Keith ... use your ears and you`ll see his technique works just fine .

  • @sweetfly66 you are right about the ears. i dont think its tasty. I think it sounds mechanical and square. Like DEVO, except thats what they were going for. your' right, people do use different techniques and thats ok. sometimes you have to go with what feels natural. other times you have to discipline yourself to learn something proper because it will give you a wider range of control in the future. But now that i've watched it again, he doesn't have the tonal control that Gadd and Mayer have

  • Up and down and most importantly, we've got this diagonally shaped connection which when traced backward helps to see the vertical and horizontal lines on a cubicle plane. So once you connect the dots in a circle you can then move in any direction you want so long as the perpendicular lines aren't drawn too far off the page!

  • 0:50 Holy sh*t! Now that's how you mix dynamics and speed together... this guy is incredibly smooth.

  • does anyone have a clue what Krantz is talking about starting at 1:25? I get the "Experiment but Together" concept...but what the hell is this vertical/ horizontal connection shit? seriously, am I just not getting it?

  • @avedisdrummer989 basically, hes talking a lot of shit and making conversation about nothing. haha.

  • He is such an awesome drummer - just can't stand watching him play. He looks like he is going to have a heart attack when he plays.

  • I got to meet Keith on tour w Steely Dan! My buddy Ted was playing w SD at the time.. back in 2003 2004...Truly the most intriguing sound I had heard form the drums in years! A drum solo I never heard.. and not some big ass drum set. .. just amazing sound!

  • i just want him to play an 18" kick and that 12" snare and a pair of small hats and just go off.

  • i love his kick drum.

  • is that chris farley?

  • what song is it from 1:59 to 2:34 plz respond :D

  • I'd like to see Keith and Steve Jordan work with each other. That would be beyond nice.

  • listen his bass drum sound!! love it

  • @mdgab321 ... yeah , it is such a refreshing sound ... I am so sick of that thud from all those DW kits ... so controlled , so sterile , so dead ..... keith`s bass drum pushes AIR , and has personality

  • Dude is fat mess.

  • @ajcox1986 but definitely a better musician than you. I can't believe that's all you had to say about this video. Do us all a favour and go fuck youself

  • @ajcox1986 And whats the matter of his fatness for us ? Do you want to spank the monkey with this fantastic instructional DVD or Do you want to learn some about drumming ?

  • kieth is unpresidente

  • Checkout the new album from Wayne Kantz , Keith Carlock and Tim Lefebvre title Krantz Carlock and Lefebvre available everywhere

  • 'unprecidented?' What kind of outfit is this? Still going to buy this though

  • yes indeed 'unprecidented' these guys are on a completely other level... and its a privelege to have some of their trio stuff on dvd... this rippin carnage has been goin on for over 10 years however this is some of the first video footage. unless you get to catch em on a random night in nyc your outta luck when it comes to seeing them live! the 55 bar shows are amazing and they very close to perfection in such a random groovin drippy funk sophisticated genuine way. so yes unprecidented :)

  • I was referring to the spelling mistake ;) But yes, all great points.

  • no doubt brotha didnt mean to be a dickhead know it all either... :) rock on bro. just a dorky fan

  • What kind of snare is that he is playing on??? I want the exact one!!

  • Yamaha brass piccolo - 14" x 4".

  • Keith plays a Yamaha SD 1403 which were stopped being made in the mid to late eighties. You can still find them every now and then on the internet (ebay or craig's list) I just bought a great one for $255.00 on ebay. Sounds incredible on the band stand.

  • I've seen him with a 1403 (3.5"x14" brass piccolo) and I know he uses one often, but in his video you can clearly see nouveau lugs on the snare, which predate the 1403. He uses the 4440 (4"x14" brass piccolo) in this video and on big tours. I'll bet he uses his old 1403 at local gigs with Rudder or Oz Noy.

  • That makes perfect sense. I know the one in his video is deeper than the 1403 but I didn't know which he might be using for that in particular. There is an article on the internet (which can be accessed by using key words in Google: keith carlock/piccolo snare/yamaha ........ in which he states that his go to snare drum is his old 1403 especially for his recordings. Thanks for the additional info.

  • YESSSSS!!!!!!

  • Awesome........

  • Kieth Carlock is the MAN!!!
