I love Davids steel playing, it is truly superb, the comparison with Lloyd Green I understand, where Lloyd may have the mastery is in the recording studio. Decades ago when he and a few others like Pete Drake were doing FIVE recording sessions a day, and here is the point, they "created" licks and sounds under pressure that are still remembered in 2011. Good as David Hartley is, the difference is the CREATIVE on the spot session men like Lloyd, Buddy, Pete, Hal, John that own the benchmark.

I used to have a Sho~Bud but could not find anyone to help me learn how to play but that was about 30 years ago, if only I had kept the SB, still maybe in another life who knows.

Look at you tube will tell anyone what David has done and is doing for the steel. Just look at his site relating to tuition, backing tracts and tabs.The time this man is devoting to help us, is just outstanding.

Yes Lloyd Green is a favourite of mine but David would also be sort out to back any artist that Lloyd has worked with..... One last word David has done the work and is still doing it.

@barrytwin What David has done for the steel is brilliant as is his playing, no doubt .......but Lloyd and others like him were INNOVATORS not IMITATORS, all the legendary session men in the 1960 1970s like Lloyd "created" the licks we are all trying to play now in 2011 !!! That is the difference ........and its a massive difference .

I don't think there is any question that Dave has done more than any other PSG player to expose us to the beauty of an instrument that is not so slowly fading from the Country Music scene.

As far as "Turbine's" comments on Billy Cooper's playing, I have to agree that while Dave and Billy have different styles on the PSG, Billy's picking and harmonies are second ot none. Google "billycoopersmusic" and give a listen to the "Healing Hands of Time" or some of his other clips.

@outdoorguy223 Hate to disagree with you, but 'better' is such a sweeping statement! Better in what way(s)? There's no denying that David Hartley is superb, but look at the history of both men. Lloyd Green has recorded with just about anyone who is anyone, he's into his 70's, has had career threatening health issues but is STILL up there with the best of them. No taking it away from Mr. Hartley, but please, he's not donethe work that Mr. Green has. :-0

@williamandsusie and if you ever want to hear Daves "match" in the US..do a search on the net for Billy Coopers Music.com or you can search for Billy Cooper and Buddy Charlton (Yes..Thee Great Buddy Charlton) Together...Before Buddy died last Feb.  They were Very close friends. In The US, Billy is probably THEE "cleanest" Smoothest, most precise steel player you will ever hear...Barr None. Personally, I think Dave and Billy C. are in a league ALL their own. Would love to hear a duet.
