Such longing captured so beautifully in music. Dvorak was my introduction to classical music years ago with his Carnival Overture, and Lucia Popp was exquisite.
Superb singing as usual. A glorious peice - I first heard it sung by one of my singing teachers though nothing compares with the incomparable Lucia. A great loss to the world.
Beautiful rendition...but oh man, that costume and those arm movements. Yeah, I get that Rusalka is otherworldly and not human. But Rusalka the snake dancer? Harumph.
What a beautiful rendition!! With all due respect to singers like Renee Fleming, I think, this piece should be sung only by Slavic singers because of the softness and depth of the voice necessary to show the true colours of this music.
Absolutely enchanting -- the perfect balance of physical and vocal beauty (she is the dead-center PERFECT voice type for this aria) - and the costuming and makeup made Ms. Popp look like Hollywood only dreams of, today! What a beautifully sensitive and satisfying performance of this great work.
I first heard the aria performed in a recital about 40 years ago -- I have fallen in love with it all over again, today --- thank you and God rest you, Lucia...
One of my all-time favorite sopranos, EVER! Her death was a tragedy and a huge loss to the world of Opera... Thank goodness we have wonderful recordings of her immense talent to remember her by.
She was really one of the greatest Voices of the Century. Even Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf acknowleged her as a Wonder. I bow my knees in respect to her!
So very sad to learn of this most wonderful voice leaving us at age 57 to brain cancer. This is the first i've listened to Lucia Popp, and I must say that I love her voice and style very, very much. Maybe she's in Heaven with Zinka Milanov singing this together...what a great song, and how it is being sung here makes me a new admirer of Lucia Popp! She is just Heavenly here. BRAVA,Popp! I truly love your voice!
WOW!! I came into this song from Milada Subrtova, but Mrs. Popp's version totally entranced me! What a voice performing a most beauteous song... Thank you for posting!!!
I fell in love with this voice over 40 years ago when I bought the de Burgos recording of Carmina Burana. I was devastated when I heard of her death in 1993. Such a beautiful woman as well, I wish to God I'd met her.
@joannespetrus1 I did in fact meet her, after a performance of Rosenkavalier at Covent Garden in the 70s when I was a student. Like you, I fell in love with her voice from the Carmina recording; I saw her Sophie, Despina and Annchen. Those whom the gods love die young. Heaven became a more tuneful place in 1993.
@adamastorBassBar Sadly I never got to see her live. Her Vier Letzte Lieder are the best in a very strong field, with Gundula Janowitz a very very very close second.
What better song introducing me to this regal woman's voice, exciting in it's seeming flawlessness, than our beloved Song to the Moon. Kudos to Antonin D., always! Makes one wonder if the voice he had in mind was indeed the future-existent Ms. Popp's...Sterling introduction, great artist!
There is a poignancy that she brings to the performance and her beautiful legato line never fails her. That we lost this beautiful voice and person at the age of only 54 is tragic! Thank you for loading this on here, it's a joy to hear perform.
Like Bohemian crystal sharp and pure, shame the sync...cant have everything.....fell in love with her when I heard her" In Trutina" in an old budget recording....
Those where 5 min. and 45 seconds of Goosebumps all over my body!!! Lucia didn't just perform this song, she made it her own; So expressive and touching, and at the same time so profound and intimate.... Thank you Lucia and thank you Onegin65
@Kropikovo I couldn't agree more. I had the privilege of living in Czechoslovakia for almost 5 years, taught myself the language (so I have a profound appreciation for the difficulty associated with singing in Czech, effectively at any rate), and fell absolutely in love with the culture, the people, the music, history and etc. Other sopranos may have excellent voices, but to hear a non Czech try to sing this inevitably brings distraction. This is a perfect performance of a perfect piece. Bravo!
@jubjub2112 It's more likely her talent is specifically suited to this song. Her Solveig's song has yet to be equaled, even though the version she sang was in German.
@P1B1U1H1 Yes . . . I believe it is both . . . talent and the fact that Czech is her native tongue. In all the years I lived in Czech I never heard a single non-Czech speak the language without it being instantly obvious that they were not a native (my friends told me I had an excellent accent . . . but I can't believe I ever sounded exactly like a native). It is a very difficult language to speak properly. Anyway . . . Popp is fantastic as is this piece, that is enough :-)
@jubjub2112 Well her native language is slovak, but it's really close to czech language ;) ... and you are right, she is absolutely breath-taking and fantastic...
@TheVolodan Ah! I didn't realize she was Slovak! Yes . . . different but very similar . . . I'm gonna listen to this again . . . it just floors me every time!
@jubjub2112 Czech language is extremely difficult to sing (especially in opera) even for slovaks, however, slovak language is originated in old czech language 'bibličtina' (language which was used in Bible of Kralice). E.g. Slovaks can't say the consonant Ř which is btw kinda important in 'řekni mi, řekni' (tell me, tell (me)!).
@BrettStasa Yes . . . the Ř is a real puzzler for most non-Czechs . . . For some reason I had no trouble with it whatsoever . . . got it immediately . . . my Czech friends couldn't believe it! After living there for more than four years I was told my accent was almost perfect . . . that I sounded like a native (I wish I could say the same about Czech grammar!! THAT was where I had the most difficulty). Anyway . . . Love the Czech language and love Popp . . . a perfect voice!
in a trance after that...how the hell do these wonderful sopranos sing with such elegance and ease ...they make it look so simple but it is sooooo incredibly difficult......i think this is the best version...ive learned from it as it is portraying the character not just on concert stage...beautiful
I fell in love with song the first time I ever heard it, which was in the movie: "Driving Miss Daisy"...... I could just feel my heart pound.!! I have listened to it many, many times since and still feel like I can't get enough of it ...... Susan
The feelings that i have when i listen this beautiful interpretation are wordless, but i cry of the beautifulness in this song... When you listen it, it transports you to another place...
I heard this renditition for the first time some months ago - I have listened to other great singers but none seem to have the richness and highlights that suit this song. Graham Melb Aus.

I really cannot imagine anyone in their right mind would want to traduce this recording in english or any other language come to that. If you mean translate then Glenmed has posted two other excellent versions of Lucia performing this with full english subtitles and these can be found in the playlist to the right hand side of this window. Happy listening.
I was so sad when I read that this beautiful person died of brain cancer. Very depressing.Someone who sings this beautifully should have the honor of being able to live forever. I feel like crying now & I think I will. :'(
Lucia Popp with her incredible voice filled with shine of the stars was the best "Rusalka" for all times. Many figures of different operas she gave her wonderful sign. Its so sad because she was passing away too early.
Dvorak himself gets goosebumps hearing Lucia perform this and even the other russalka, both real and mythical, weep with equal parts or joy and sorrow
Whenever I hear Rusalka I think of Lucia, I don't think there's anyone really capturing the spirit of Rusalka as her. The Opera here in Oslo recently put up their production of Rusalka, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Norwegian Opera, it was wonderous...but it would be better if Lucia was there to grace us with her Rusalka
The best Rusalka I have ever heard was Elka Mitzewa, There is a recording with her. She has a silvery glimmer in her voice, fitting perfectly to a water nymph.
If God would have had other plans she would still be singing to amazing. He voice was top notch with a perfect technical approach , that could sing anything she wanted!
This is amazing. Her chill coloratura voice brings the sad "alien" feel into this aria and it's deeply sad. She's a water sprite. She can never be a human. Much better than Fleming's rendition. She sounds like a governess in love with a count instead of water sprite. She sounds a bit self-indulgent, too. Lucia Popp's lamentation as a water sprite is just so believable. It touches deep in my heart and stir it all. I feel Rusalka's pain. I really do.
Lucia Popp is one of those phenomenal sopranos you always remember, not for any obvious trait, but for a "je ne sais quoi" quality. Her voice shows off what a light lyric really is, and she is so graceful and a delight. I love her rendition of this.
The only criticism I have is the bad lip synch. But Ms. Popp's voice and style are superb and this is one of Dvorak's most beautiful pieces.Brava Lucia!
Merveilleuse Lucia Popp, si musicale et expressive. La voix est parfaitement bien placée, le timbre chaud et clair à la fois. Elle rappelle Elly Ameling. Lucia a une appréhension très poétique de la musique.
Do you know when that's produced? I remember that german television made a short Rusalka-setting as introducion for her interview in TV show "Biolek" o "Bio" end ca 1976-78???
beautiful singing, beautiful makeup, bad lip synch (as all operatic singers), dreadfully "vegeterian" scenography-costume She is a Water Nymph not the Queen of Vegetables :))
I think the point is she is underater, among the lake flora (i.e. plants). But who cares about costumes--just listen to the absolutely best little mermaid.
OHH, MY GOD!!! Thank you very much! That's great. Lucissima! How I love her... This is the best Rusalka together with Adriana Kohutkova and Gabriela Benackova. These three slovak sopranos are unbeatable in this role. Thank you so much :)
wasn't this her native language also?

What a voice chilling. I'm shivering of her beauty.

Wie traurig, dass diese STIMME so früh gegangen ist...

For no other aria is there one interpretation so much superior to all others as for this one.

At 1:25 something inside me leaps. Dvorak's opera deserves to be better known. And no one has ever sung this piece quite like Popp.

That part also sends chills down my spine because of the beauty of her voice. May she rest in peace.

Unwahrscheinlich sagenhaft schön. Dvorak hat es nicht erleben dürfen.
Dankeschön für diese Pracht, onegin65. A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

Miraculous performance!!
This is the definitive Rusalka.
Lucia Popp was a great great singer.
And in this role she has no real competition.
So sorry she is not with us anymore.

@chaiter1 I think that Milada Subrtova is equal competition :-)

The only criticism I have is the bad lip synch. But Ms. Popp's voice and style are superb and this is one of Dvorak's most beautiful pieces.Brava Lucia!

Can someone tell me when this was telecast? The date, or where? I would love to get a recording if possible.

Merveilleuse Lucia Popp, si musicale et expressive. La voix est parfaitement bien placée, le timbre chaud et clair à la fois. Elle rappelle Elly Ameling. Lucia a une appréhension très poétique de la musique.
Grand Merci !

Silver bell voice with hints of honey and velvet...great acting, gorgeous face...I feel
transported to another era when voices was all it mattered. The clear notes of her voice
slide and ripple all over the water and air...
Just bewitching...
Lucia forever...and a day.

She is a Water Nymph not the Queen of Vegetables :))
hahaha.:) Still, here the sound is better then in the previous youtube version.
She's perfection.

My beloved Lucia is far better than Netrbeko and all those singers without any expression.
