I learned the same way--the hard way. Mine was a subaru outback. Puddle looked shallower, and I could of pumped the water out but I was ignorant enough to try and start it while the exhaust was under water. That's when It was sucked in and the damage was done.
I'm going to tell you right now you sucked water in to your intake. I also have a ranger, 88 ranger, and I sucked water into the intake and she did the same thing.
Man, that sucks. Thought I did that to my one Jeep when what I thought was a puddle ended up being up to my windshield. It died, but after we towed it out it luckily started right up.
Can anybody say snorkel? Crazy that it hydro-locked I've seen trucks do the same thing and never had a problem. Must have had something to do with where the rangers air intake is located.
You're an unlucky SOB. Ranger motors are usually bulletproof. I once got mine up to the emblem in flood water then this asshole comin' the other way splashed the water half way up my windshield and I nearly ended up like you. I took her immediately down to the local Grease Monkey and had them do an oil change with engine purge and air filter change and she was good as new like nothing happened.
Wow! u barely went under for half a second!!..did u have one of those "cone" type air filters or a stock box? it really shouldnt have sucked water in that easy
@ComedyRobby Umm, If you want to see a picture of the f*****g piston, I still have it in a Ziplock bag...It blew alright. It was murder at its finest.
I took off my cylinder heads and everything looked okay. Then I was pushing down on the piston for #6 and it collapsed.Connecting Rod destroyed.the thing that sucks is there was a way to go aroundthe water. but I've learned.....the expensive way.....Hehe :)
Had my '96 explorer stop in a waterhole, but intake filter had water. dried it out and it was good to go. Had water over the hood in an '09 f-150 with no problems at all.
hydrolock, yep did the same thing. got drunk thought i could follow a gmc with a 6" lift through the pit 3/4 of the way bam. had water comming in over the windows. I love the rangers though got her out a day of cleaning and she runs like nothing happen
Should have pulled the plugs and pumped out the water and I would bet it would have been fine. 4.0s are pretty tuff if thats what it was. It happend to me atleast 5 or 6 times and with 180k on the engine, it still fires up every day and runs, well like its has 180K miles on it :)
Seriously, did you not read the video info? "The sound you hear at the end is a rod twisting and breaking and a piston shattering." It would not have been fine to just pull the plugs and pump out the water.
sorry to hear that bud but you should not take chances.
i went through it too. actually several times but i had no idea how deep it was. it was in may 08 and it was way deeper and way more muddy - mushy. but i have 4" lift and 35 swampers and a snorkel on my disco. it was up to my windshield and i was thinking to myself -this is it, this is the end, but seemingly the snorkel saved me.
it took me a good half day to wash off the dirt and it still has pounds underneath.
That must have been falls dam. I took my 87 s-dime blazer through the one around the corner from that and went through it no prob. It was probably as deep as that one.
Yeah man, that mud hole is kinda funny. Looks shallow but if you go in from that angle it really dips down in there. I wonder how many engines have been claimed by it. I'm glad you had a better experience with it than I did.
Well, not really. The engine was started at a later time before being rebuilt, but it wasn't pretty. Just read the description. The only reason I listed "hydrolock" as one of the tags is because I thought it was sort of like a hydrolock (and to get more veiws ;) ).
The guy that rebuilt the engine (I know, bad idea for a crappy truck like mine, but I love my truck!) said there was about 1/4 cup of water in the oil pan when he emptied it, but I don't know if that's what you're asking.
Well, to make a long story short I've put about $3K in it since that fateful day, but that was the engine plus some other stuff. I'm not gonna go into any details.
hahaha i did the same in my jeep when it was alot deeper

I honestly doubt you blew a piston, that sounded much more like you getting water in your intake, this isn't murder, more like an act of violence :P

@ComedyRobby
Getting water in the Intake will cause Hydraulic pressure & blow through a piston & twist a rod with ease.
I feel for the owner of this Ranger.
