What I wanted to say was if e is after i, then you pronounce it saying the e, like this word (riesling) and if its the other way around( this is where I bogged up) the e first then the i, you would pronounce it with the i sounding, like - german word here - scheibe (toast)

To the down-voters, this one is completely correct. It's a German word, and they pronounce "IE" as "EE," and "S" as "Z" (at least within the context of this word).
For a "riceling" pronunciation, it'd have to have been spelled "Reissling."

If the 'e' comes after the i, then you would pronounce it "reesling" but if it were the 'i' than the 'e', the it would be " rysling.
