Half my high school class (many didn't graduate) are in jail, out of jail in exchange for becoming a paid police informant, drug dealers/users, hustlers, hoodrats, what have you. Oh, and they are all on some sort of welfare. That's just an observation from a small town on the east coast.
I understand the perception, but this is NOT necessarily true- my husband has been looking for work for 2.5 years- we have gone through our savings, all of our investments, everything- he has an Engineering Degree, Master's Degree, his P.E. etc. THE JOBS ARE NOT THERE! He has looked far and wide... there are too many Engineers on the market and NOT ENOUGH JOBS! Unemployment is far a solution- it ends and I pray he has a job by then. I work, too by the way- good jobs are HARD to find!

With all the construction workers out of jobs, I would think a better use of our (government) money would be to hire them to repair the multiple bridges in this country which are in horrendous shape. They need to be fixed anyway and there's no money to do it so why not use government money to hire them to do it, as these we get value for our money.

I do know from personal experience...when I was unemployed...getting checks in the mail...I had alot of free time....I felt like crap because I wasn't working...and I did use...alot...to try and drown out my problems...didn't work...I've been employed for for a solid 8yrs now...I've been sober for 7...go figure...American people need jobs...private sector jobs...to get our Country moving forward again!!!
Most states give people 20 months of unemployenment, and Congress gave additional 99 weeks.....................the question is where do we go from here, do we extend it by another 99 weeks? Where's the end?
Republicans did suggest to extend it for a short period of time, but to cut benefits by 5%, Democrats were the ones who refused the offer, because the need something to play politics with.
@RussMusiq The end is when the unemployment rate drops back to where it was before the Republicans sold us out to Big Business. Of course, the rate is inaccurate. Anybody unemployed for more than 26 weeks fell off the roles. Unemployment is closer to 20% and there are at least 10 people for every job; not 6. Plus all the jobs available are specialized. Contrary to rumours, Mickey Ds and Walmart are not hiring. A PhD in pysics doesn't qualify for a nursing job.

I also work with Workforce office regarding enrollments. I certainly can speak from experience while you can only judge from statistics (which are not update with our current unemployment rates)... By the way, I have a master degree and was on Unemployment a year ago.. I dont do drugs. I was laid off thats why i was on it.

The stats do exist and they have a rather large window but they are hardly unknown. Worst case scenario you are looking at 10% who have ANY involvement with hard drugs.
You can't gather statistics looking around you; your sample is skewed. Plenty of hard working people get caught in bad economic times and to leave them hanging because you don't want to enable a minority of recipients who 'abuse' the system is unconscionable.

I am a master machinist and I have been laid off since October 2008. I have applied for countless jobs and I can't get anything. Not even Walmart. I have worked for over 18 years and I can only collect for less than two years. I say the government should get the unemployment money from companies that outsource work and you should be able to collect until you get work. If not there's going to be a lot of people on welfare.

Unemployment sucks. I had to draw a few yrs back when the business I worked for went under. I was on it for two months and finally found another job. But today, I'd say it would take u even longer to find another job. Even at Mickey D's, there are no jobs anymore.
I use my money on all my bills. I was making $40,000.00 a year when I got laid off. My bills come out to around $30,000.00 a year. Getting a landscaping job is not going to pay my bills. These people now expect us to get two 40 hour a week jobs to pay our bills. That's horseshit. We need to start creating the kind of jobs with wages we are used to making or our economy is just going to take a nosedive.

I understand the perception, but this is NOT necessarily true- my husband has been looking for work for 2.5 years- we have gone through our savings, all of our investments, everything- he has an Engineering Degree, Master's Degree, his P.E. etc. THE JOBS ARE NOT THERE! He has looked far and wide... there are too many Engineers on the market and NOT ENOUGH JOBS! Unemployment is far a solution- it ends and I pray he has a job by then. I work, too by the way- good jobs are HARD to find!

With all the construction workers out of jobs, I would think a better use of our (government) money would be to hire them to repair the multiple bridges in this country which are in horrendous shape. @RussMusiq The end is when the unemployment rate drops back to where it was before the Republicans sold us out to Big Business. Of course, the rate is inaccurate. Anybody unemployed for more than 26 weeks fell off the roles. Unemployment is closer to 20% and there are at least 10 people for every job; not 6. Plus all the jobs available are specialized. Contrary to rumours, Mickey Ds and Walmart are not hiring. A PhD in pysics doesn't qualify for a nursing job.

I actually work at College in which i handle enrollment registration. I am in contact with Workforce , which they help unemployed. about 80% of the calls i get are people who were laid off. @TheRatzBand you go to dartmouth means nothing. I have working relations to Workforce (Unemployment office) EVERYDAY. I spend most my day speaking to unemployed people. I also work with Workforce office regarding enrollments. I certainly can speak from experience while you can only judge from statistics (which are not update with our current unemployment rates)... By the way, I have a master degree and was on Unemployment a year ago.. I dont do drugs. I was laid off thats why i was on it.

The stats do exist and they have a rather large window but they are hardly unknown. Worst case scenario you are looking at 10% who have ANY involvement with hard drugs.
You can't gather statistics looking around you; your sample is skewed. Plenty of hard working people get caught in bad economic times and to leave them hanging because you don't want to enable a minority of recipients who 'abuse' the system is unconscionable.

Also we are talking about getting tested to get unemployment which is the money you work for while you are working. So lets say you passed your drug test at work which you have to do to get the job. @sc0pl355 my whole point is that if this is to happen, most of the people here in my area of nc wouldn't be on the system at all. but there's nothing that qualifies a person to be on welfare so that should be drug tested. Also, i beer and liquor should be tested for because if you have no money to feed your kids you shouldn't be drinking. I hate all drunks, I can't believe that stuff is legal it causes so many deaths compared to mary jane. Just all part of the n.w.o.

I am a master machinist and I have been laid off since October 2008. I have applied for countless jobs and I can't get anything. Not even Walmart. I have worked for over 18 years and I can only collect for less than two years. I say the government should get the unemployment money from companies that outsource work and you should be able to collect until you get work. If not there's going to be a lot of people on welfare.

Well, they should tax the companies heavily and give them tax breaks when they hire unemployed americans.
If you outsource, you get heavily taxed. Want to pay less tx? Hire some unemployed americans. Don't want to give the unemployed a job? Your heavy outsource taxes go toward supporting the same people you didn't want to hire.

Unemployment sucks. I had to draw a few yrs back when the business I worked for went under. I was on it for two months and finally found another job. But today, I'd say it would take u even longer to find another job. Even at Mickey D's, there are no jobs anymore.

I use my money on all my bills. I was making $40,000.00 a year when I got laid off. My bills come out to around $30,000.00 a year. Getting a landscaping job is not going to pay my bills. These people now expect us to get two 40 hour a week jobs to pay our bills. That's horseshit. We need to start creating the kind of jobs with wages we are used to making or our economy is just going to take a nosedive.
