  • Yes the good ole days . Bought this album in 82 still sounds great!

  • Wow, I am a huge Paul Collins\Beat fan and have been looking for this video since I saw it a few times in early 80's. I wish I could get my hands on it but it has never been - and probably never will be - commerically available. That's a real shame but thanks for posting this video!

  • I remember this from when I was in 6th or 7th grade. This was sick back then. Holy shit I cant believe someone put this up here....Good one

  • Right!-10th grade-fall of 1982, taped off of WPLJ-FM in NYC before they became top 40-haven't heard since-can't believe I found it here!

  • This was rock 'n roll just before MTV came along. MTV was kinda cool in the early days, but we all know what it turned into. This absolutely ROCKS!

  • I found it some time back, still the only version, I will add a stereo track from the LP if I can get them to match?!? It NEEDS to be done

  • i love this track..does the drummer look like Ronnie Milsap!!..lol

  • @MrDuaner123 Yeah that drummer was also the drummer for Elton John and Alice Cooper. His name was Dennis Conway, a hotshot touring and studio drummer. Too bad he didn't tour with Ronnie Milsap, he's great too! Songs like Smoky Mountain Rain, Any Day Now (written for him by Burt Bacharach), I Wouldnt Have Missed It For The World, Pure Love, There's No Getting Over Me, Stranger In My House, Don't You Know How Much I Love You etc.

  • Nice souvenir from the days when MTV would give outside the box acts some exposure. Collins is still plugging away. I saw him at Kenny's Castaways in NYC in spring of 2010.

  • As I was thumbing through LPs at a record store in 1982, Paul Collins and Larry Whitman walked in to promote their new album The Kids Are the Same. Only the salesman at the counter and another customer were in attendance at the time. I had no idea who Paul Collins was, but I bought the album and both of those guys autographed it. It sounds as awesome today as it did back then!

  • awsome song!!

  • In the UK it is on a CD called It's the Beat/The kids are alright. If you like that one, wait until you hear "will you listen"

  • @phnuff Will U Listen is a damn fine track! The whole album is a winner

  • Where can I find this CD, or an .mp3 file for this song?

  • @LiamNY CBS Records, used record store, EBAY

  • One of the Great Power Pop Groups of the '80s....I got my first Flying V 'cuz of this song!

  • yes! I finally remembered who made this song, and here it is on youtube!

    *adds to faves*

    #@!

  • This is an awesome video, thanks for posting. I also saw this on MTV around 10 years ago. Couldn't forget it. So, I purchased all of Paul Collin's Cds found on e-bay.

  • Awesome.

  • Grand video of a great song, thanks for posting this classic...

  • this is the only song i lack from in my collection... i cant believe i actually found it on you tube!!!!!!!!!!!! the thing is, i remember the video, the guitar, how i felt, where i was and the newness of a ton of things but forgot the name of the band if you can believe that!....i have been looking for over 25 years and cant believe i found the video!!!!thanks for the post!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow... Last time I saw this vid I was in 10th grade 1982 and high as a kite. All I could remeber was the freeky look on the drummers face and the weird chord progression. killer tune thanks for the rewind...

  • Nobody has played this song on the radio for over 15 years that I know of. Too bad ! Great 80's song. I was glad when I was able to find it on CD 4 yrs. ago........

  • @chgomafia you need a better radio station. KSHE95 real rock radio. Probably THE best classic rock station in the country. St.Louis baby.

  • At long last, the fabled "Highway" video ... (thanks, YouTube!)

What a great bunch of guys -- friendly and approachable. Eventually they let us backstage after nearly every show (I ended up seeing 'em about 25 times).

Still looking for the "Don't Wait Up" video I saw once on Videowest ...

  • Even the drummer? He looks creepy, like the villian in an early Looney Tunes cartoon featuring Porky Pig that I vaguely remember.

  • That was Dennis Conway (a real gentleman BTW) who at that time did seem to have a bit of a Marky Ramone (or for that matter, Mick Mars!) "distance" thing going because 1) he was new to the band, 2) considerably older than the others, and 3) consequently, determined to try to lay low and just do his job.

However, you really should research this Porky Pig cartoon and write more about what you find; it seems to have made a big impression on you ...!

  • i was in a band called tryst

our bass player looked just like theirs

we went to the stone in sf saw them

    and it freaked em out

we opened for them on 1981 in palo alto and sf and a rainy night in berkely

  • Can you picture a song like "Let It Be" by The Beatles, which you know is a great song... and it gets airplay and goes nowhere and you think, "What the fuc*, I'm I crazy?"... well, this is the song for me... how this didn't become a major hit is a mystery to me... kind of like Mc Cartney's "Mull Of Kintyre" a huge # 1 worldwide in Spain, lreland, Australia, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, France, Canada, Mexico, England, Scotland, & numerous places elsewhere & in the USA it doesn't sell? Fuck?

  • This song has haunted me for years, and I finally see it on the mighty YouTube! My stars!

  • Seriously...it has been in the back of my head for a quarter century. Youtube...I swear... sometimes I'm just blown away.

  • Well said, Haunting one of my favorites of all time.

The simple bass line is killer.

  • I got to see them live in the bay area whilst still THE BEAT. I remember their Ramoneaque cutes. They were perhaps then in a legal deal withthe soon to be English Beat over the same name.

  • They stopped playing this video. I could never understand why? The FLYING V will make a comeback!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the resin soaked memories!

  • Just like all the posters before me, saw these guys on MTV in the early 80's.

Killer song. Love how it shifts from a groove to all out rock and then slips back to the groove.

This would make a great night-driving song...along with 'Radar Love' of course!

  • I have been looking for this song for forever. I remember being in 10th grade and seeing this video on MTV and it rocked. But I couldn't remember the name of the band. Thank you!!

  • YES! I saw it on MTV too and was hooked. In 1996, I got to kick it with Paul in a club. We drank heavily and I asked him to get on stage and do a song. He asked, "Which one?" I suggested "Highway." He laughed and declined.

  • That's one creepy looking drummer. He looks like a character from an old Porky Pig race car cartoon.

  • gerkinstock: WTF!? The drummer is just a calm cool laid back dude. Why you gotta dis him??? Besides, your girlfriend(who is leaving you by the way)told me YOU have a tail...so what are you talking about?????

  • This smoking song was played on MTV in the early 80's and was a hit on the cooler New York City FM stations at the time. Awesome song!

Great songs never die they just stay hidden from most people!!!

    Driver.... lets go!

    Namaste,

    Richard

  • this song will be stuck in my head all day! dm dm da da dm dm da da, CH CH CHUUUUH!!!!(I would try to spell out the guitar solo...but it's too hard!!!

  • Now HERE is a great jam!!!!!!! Haunting groove and guitar. EEEEEXXXXXCELLENT!

  • I LOVE this! Got to meet Paul in 1996. It was at a small club in Chicago. I asked him if he was going to play this one. He said no. Not disappointed, he put on a great show and we drank heavily after the show.

    Great night.

  • I was a little kid in school watching them on early MTV. I could not wait until this song came on each time. Later, when I became a musician myself, I saw them in San Fran. I was one of only two people in the club on an off night, and they honored my request and even invited me backstage. Now that is class. "Cryin Won't Help" is still my favorite. Play on Paul - thanks - Toy Subs

  • THANKYOU!!!!!! i HAVE NOT HEARD THIS SONg SINCE 1983 IN DENVER, CO! I somehow forgot the full name of the band and yet remembered the song. AND HERE IT IS IN 2008 ON YOUTUBE! I love this song! THANKS MAN!!!! FIVE STARS!
