I feel sorry for the interviewer he is really trying. The fans who defend Merritt's behavior as "funny" or "great" need to look into themselves. I don't care how much of a genius he supposedly is you can't be so intolerable.
@wolfxbloed yeah, but that doesn't grant him the merit to act so distant and almost disrespectful to a guy who is just trying to learn more about him and the band for the public's enjoyment... or maybe he just has a weird social problem? haha
Hahah. I don't see why people don't see that a lot of this is dry humor with a straight face. He's not being snobby, he's being funny! Ugh the interviewer doesn't get it at all though. And he's so bubbly, poor guy. But he isn't completely terrible either. I liked the questions.
Yeah, Merritt isn't a fantastic interviewee, and the interviewer isn't a good one at all. He asks dull questions, and Merritt answers them in a dull manner. I think if he were more experienced, the interviewer would be able to feed off of Merritt and get him to answer more brightly.

yeah, not only is Stephen Merritt an asshole and a snob but he is not even close to good enough to warrant it. His music is boring and pretentious. His lyrics sound like they were written by a lit major at Sarah Lawrence. The fatc that he compares himself to Irving Berlin is insane.
I don't understand why Merritt would subject himself to moronic interviews, especially with such a lack of patience. This attitude seems a bit staged, as if he purposely agrees to an interview just so he can showcase his talent for condescending the person asking the questions. Maybe that's part of his "performance". To me, I think a more genuine approach would be to avoid interviews altogether if he wants that "mystique". It's a lot easier to be artistic without all the snob posturing.
What a twat! You're totally right blastik1000. Seems like Merritt has no problem dismissing new music, yet he admits to be unaware of new artists and trends. He's very talented, no doubt about it, but my god he's such a snob. And why was the interviewer so politely putting up with it. He should have slapped him or at least challenge his idiotic smart-ass opinions.
Merritt is such an insufferable bore in interviews. Why does he agree to do these interviews if he's just going to mumble the entire time? Merritt says that tons of bands sounded like Erasure in the 80's, and he's wrong there. They were pretty unique, and that's why they're still around today. He's so busy being a smart ass with the interviewer that he fails to recognize that he's being a clueless snob himself.
After this interview Stephin wrote the song "If I Sink Any Lower, This Chair Will Be Sitting On Me."

Stephin's mannerisms intrigue me. Does anyone know if he's autistic? I'm autistic too so I see a little bit of me in him as well.
