What are you lot on about? Volkswagon have been putting automated manuals, called DSG for dual shaft Gearbox, behind their diesels for the last 10 years in Australia, drives like an auto but it's not. As for the Subaru diesel, I've driven one, nice but, no torque under about 2300 RPM where the turbo cuts in, then in the 6 speed manual your trying to find the next gear, as for the gear indicator display useless, it doesn't show which gear your in until the clutch is out, to late, wrong gear stall

For everyone asking why they aren't in the states, it's because there is very little market in the United States for manual gearbox cars (i prefer manual, i want a diesel, but the market IS small here). Subaru doesn't have an automatic gearbox that can withstand the torque of a diesel in combo with the traction of AWD. Besides that, the US allows only 1/4 of the CO2 emissions that the EU permits. So Subaru would need to dump a lot of money to make it legal. It's gonna be a long wait. :(
@miketheskibum425 Volkswagen has several manual diesel cars here, just the other day I drove a Manual Diesel Golf at the dealer. They also offer the diesel with an auto transmission, so it can be done. Manual Subaru's sell well in the US so it would be economically viable to bring it here.
@GunsOfThePhoenix Subaru is trying to convert all of it's automatic transmissions in the US to CVT. CVT's don't have enough friction to handle the torque and traction of an AWD diesel. VW is front wheel drive, reducing the force of friction on tires by half, making it an unfair comparison. Planetary gear sets (for auto trans) cannot handle the torque AND double friction unless they're huge and expensive. Only other option is a manual gearbox that is robotically controlled, but that's pricey.
@kenfo0 Could they? Yes. Any planetary system would have to be huge and expensive and cost a lot to engineer (see reply to gunsofthepheonix). Design costs go up, manufacturing costs go up, and product cost goes up for a diesel that (it's not good, but it's the truth) the majority of Americans don't want. Robotic manual has same problem, CVT has same problem. Emissions and taxes DEFINITELY also play a big role, but if an auto was viable then why wouldn't they sell an auto diesel overseas?
@Jessekrs123 - I am inpressed with the quietnes of this engine. I see that some folks who own VW Vans that had the aircooled 4 cylinder gas engines are replaceing them with Suburu's 6 cylinder gas. The performance I see from the videos is outstanding. Too bad VW didn't offer a 6 cyl. in their vans they were so woefully underpowered. As to VW's 4 cyl. diesel I can not imagine the performance. I had owned 2 diesel Rabbits from the 80's and they were not speed demons.
@bigjonnyjon I stand by my earlier statement. The VW van I owned on in 1972 was woefully underpowered. In 1972 I saw folks changing out the 4 cyl engines for Corvair 6 cyl engines, they were cheap & plentiful. Granted the Corvair engine had oil leak problem it is an engineering problem that can be solved. I never considered a Porshe as it was and is out of my price range as such I was unaware that VW had a 6 cyl engine. As far as I know and again I say too bad the VW van didn't have a 6 cyl.
I've been looking for an opposing diesel engine for use in an aircraft...... This looks promising.... Do you know where I can find out more about this engine...... Thanks.....
diesel engines are WAY less pollutant than gasoline engines. just because they poor out black smoke sometimes, doesnt mean that they are polluting the air. diesel emissions are a LOT easier to clean than gas emissions
I have a 2001 Outback, 2.5L boxer 4. It runs smooth in the car and I like it overall, except for the head gasket problem common on those engines and how it's a little... alright it has no balls. But what I don't get is how it's so smooth all throughout the car and no matter how fast its revving, but when someone pulls in the driveway, I can feel it vibrating my entire house and the floors... whereas my Honda Odyssey is silent and smoother (V6), and even my old Infiniti M30's 3.0L V6 is better.
@OhFishyFish no diesels nowaday do have em. I didn't say that they use em to ignite the fuel, bust once teh pressure is high enough and the diesel ignites then they help by burning more fuel
@MaurizioM89 It's not a complicated engine at all. The amount of engineering required to balance an H4 or H6 is significantly less than a V6. There is nothing more complicated about making a boxer engine.
@StillOnWin95 well i said is complicated engine because is hard to work in, here in italy we have lots of Alfa Romeo with boxer engine and most mechanics said that is very hard, lots of parts to dismantle etc, but i like the engine :)
The only thing you are forgetting is that this Subaru Diesel engine has a timing chain and not a belt, and this chain doesn't have to be replaced, EVER.
@83ls my bad...that means i can breathe easy should i ever have to replace one, i know chains can rattle shake and do all kinds of crazy things for ages until they finally go :D
Comment on the CRD - I know of someone who has a CRD, and it idles as quietly, starts easily and is close to being "green" as most of the hybrids out there. We must look at what the landfill options are with hybrids. Where do you put a spent battery from a hybrid or plug-in? Has anyone thought of that when they came up with them? Is the air any cleaner in Europe with half their vehicles running on diesel?
The australian versoin has a native compression ratio of 16 to 1 I wonder how much the head and pistons can take because for a diesel you can boost that lot higher. You diesel trucks are 20-22 to 1
will this fit in the back of the vw camper (old ones obviously) like the petrol vesion? i'm thinking stacks more bhp (this is 145) with a great mpg as well, any techies comment? gratfully received
aww, no way! (insert sarcasm here) its not like there gonna go drive round with their bonnet up, geez go have a look under the other 10 billion cars bonnets!!!
pauliusba have u heard of multi fuel engines? look at catapillar's website they make these engines. u could say that tractors that run onoil seed rape are multi fuel or chip oil or even petrol on's that need TVO to start them
That's because the emission requirements for light trucks is different than for passenger cars. The reason SUV's took off under Clinton's Presidency is because of that little loophole in the EPA rules. That and cheap gasoline as well!
Yeah, 12mpg with a 5th wheel behind it! There is no diesel pickup that gets 12mpg unless there is something critically wrong with it, or if you're driving like a jack ass. 20+ mpg is very common on the highway from diesel pickups... oh, and I agree that California can suck it!
Do you just go on all the scooby videos and write the same comment?
Japan make much more reliable cars than Germany these days. Most old porsche's suck the big one and alot of the new ones do to. My scooby has done 188k miles and still runs perfectly and is abused on a daily basis. Your average porsche probably gets driven 100 miles a week.
If you go on the top gear site they love this engine and says its one of the best diesels they've seen.
Leave him alone, he's just some racer-wannabe spending whole nights in front of his Playstation. He probably didn't pass his maths test, mother took his games away and we can see the results. ;)
well you don't have any idea what you're talking about. I have a boxer that's 14 years old, runs as good as the day it was made, no rebuild, original engine. You know nothing about boxers and therefore should not comment.
While he is right about some of the Subaru boxer engines developing "piston slap" as they get older, it certainly doesn't hurt the engine. Subaru even issued a press release about the noise, and said it doesn't hurt the car as long as the knock goes away after warm up.
I have an 11 year old Subaru Outback that also runs as well as it did when it was new. It has the piston slap knock in the winter, but it's a minor nuisance in an otherwise awesome car.
This DIESEL ENGINE HAD BETTER COME TO THE U.S. MARKET WITHOUT DISCUSSION. I AM TIRED OF HEARING EXCUSES WHY WE CAN'T HAVE DIESEL POWERED CARS! I DON'T CARE WHAT THE EMISSIONS ARE OR WHAT CALIFORNIA SAYS WITH THEIR STUPID EMISSIONS STANDARDS; WE SHOULD HAVE DIESELS HERE IN CARS, AND I GIVE CREDIT TO SUBARU FOR MAKING A GOOD DIESEL! THERE'S A WAY TO GET IT HERE, MAKE IT PASS, AND MAKE IT RUN ON OUR DIESEL! IF VW CAN GET A DIESEL HERE AND SELL IT WELL, THE OTHERS CAN DO IT TOO!
honestly, there is no need here in america. Diesel fuel costs more than gasoline/petrol here. And they are worse for the environment. so why would we want diesel powered cars here? the cost more to run and are worse on the planet?
actually, diesels are cheaper to run per mile than gasoline-powered cars. and yes--per gallon of fuel burned, diesel emits more particulate matter, but per mile driven, it's actually cleaner than gasoline. not to mention diesels are more reliable.
it won;t though, thanks to California, Subaru in Japan said that it will only come over if all the states accept it as part of existing emissions standards for diesels, and California's restrictions are too stiff, I really want one though :(
I would TOTALLY by one as my daily driver. I'm still keeping my "in progress" wrx wagon STI conversion, but a boxer engine that gets 50mpg! It's like bringing my two favorite things together...Subarus and not giving money to the rich "big oil" ASSHOLES.
Its about cost. Sure there are better designs out there but there is a point when you aren't making a performance car that cost and performance level out so that money can be made. The reason for the top mount is the turbo placement and the necessary tubes to make a fmic would cause more lag. This engine has been very praised from all the reviews I've read. If you're so smart why aren't you designing cars?
You probably think that the placement, on top of the engine, allows more air to pass to the radiator, its not so. Only so much air can fit in the underbonnet area, the air scoop floods it with air reducing the amount of air that passes through the radiator. Most of the air that passes through that hood scoop takes the easy route around the intercooler not through it. Not to mention the lack of surface area and tube and fin design further hurt its efficiency and make it easy to heatsoak.
That is pretty good. I was speaking merely of the intercooler. But quite honestly any car company is capable of designing a diesel car that gets 50 mpg. Whether they actually decide to invest the money is another story.
True, unfortunately. BMW has 3 models that get that sort of mileage that I know about, and may have others. All manufacturers should be making small diesels, and we should prosecute the EPA for keeping them out of the USA!! Even my huge 4x4 F250 Powerstroke has gotten 23 mpg at 70 MPH with the AC on!
Air to air; it is the cooler for the air that pass thrue the turbo and goes to the engine. By cooling this air, you end up with more oxygene per volume to the engine and by this, more HP !
when they bring this to the states- and with the 6 cyl for the big legacy and tribeca- subaru will have even more following than they do now. its time has come.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
DIESEL ENGINES SOUNDS LIKE SHIT! Spoken like a ignorant asswipe , Sounds better Way better than some of Subs Old Gas Lifter clacking gas engines . That sounded like they was all but to blow up in 5 mins
@fucker666477 Actually, diesel engines exhaust a lot more pollutant than gasoline engines, especially particulates, of which unburnt carbon is the most dangerous to human health.
Widespread of diesel engines also have huge impact on many other parts of our lives. Biodiesel for instance causes many farmers (especially in 3rd world) to abandon food crops and focus on subsidised biodiesel crops. That has enormous effect on biodiversity and food prices in developing countries.
True! But think of the of the fuel economy, way, way, better than any petrol/gasoline powered car and the new diesels of today go as well as any pertol/gasoline motor and they have much more pulling power as well! It's allot to think about!
Just had a test drive in a Legacy 2.0 Turbo Diesel Amazing leaves the competition in the shade No vibration,no noise, good power delivery and best of all the dealer tells me 1000 Km to a tank of diesel pretty amazing for an AWD car me thinks !!May consider one in 09
Dang I just don't like the sound of diesel engines. They sound like a people mover van. Can't imagine how a TDI flat4 will sound. Have to wait and see I guess.
Oh sorry I didn't make myself clear... I meant, I want to know how rexies, liberty GT and forrester XT will sound like with a nice turboback. Just wondering if they will produce the same rumble which is characteristic of subaru. Thanks for correcting me :)
Diesel is the way to go. Diesels last longer, handle load better, and are rapidly becomming as quiet as gasoline engines. Diesels also use less fuel overall. HURRY SUBARU! I am waiting for a diesel!
Diesel technology has advanced far beyond the old rattly tractor. European diesels are advancing fast and are improving beyond belief..but then european cars and trucks have always been 20 years ahead of everywhere else!!
"Gasoline for life," eh? Maybe you should rephrase that to reflect the actual reality of petrol engines more accurately:
Willing enslavement to USA Oil for life with no designed-in biofuel capabilty, just because you believe everything they say, and refuse to stop living in the past...how typically American....

pauliusba have u heard of multi fuel engines? look at catapillar's website they make these engines. u could say that tractors that run onoil seed rape are multi fuel or chip oil or even petrol on's that need TVO to start them
burghill1979 2 years ago
california's emmision standards are nutzo.
You can have a big old lifted chevy turbo diesel that gets 12mpg but you cant have a subaru turbo diesel that probably gets 30mpg.
voznow7 3 years ago 2
I have one.
It does about 50mpg.
I have few vids about it.
Check them out.

That's because the emission requirements for light trucks is different than for passenger cars. The reason SUV's took off under Clinton's Presidency is because of that little loophole in the EPA rules. That and cheap gasoline as well!
divisioneight 2 years ago
Yeah, 12mpg with a 5th wheel behind it! There is no diesel pickup that gets 12mpg unless there is something critically wrong with it, or if you're driving like a jack ass. 20+ mpg is very common on the highway from diesel pickups... oh, and I agree that California can suck it!

"Porsche boxer there is notheing better! "
If you go on the top gear site they love this engine and says its one of the best diesels they've seen.

well you don't have any idea what you're talking about. I have a boxer that's 14 years old, runs as good as the day it was made, no rebuild, original engine. You know nothing about boxers and therefore should not comment.
Idiot.
mexmiler 3 years ago 3

IF VW CAN GET A DIESEL HERE AND SELL IT WELL, THE OTHERS CAN DO IT TOO!
carwrtr1 3 years ago 5
u americans didn't want any diesel before, u won't get it now. Live with your big-ass sucky V8's with a power-to-liter ratio of my daugthers moped.

honestly, there is no need here in america. Diesel fuel costs more than gasoline/petrol here. And they are worse for the environment. so why would we want diesel powered cars here? the cost more to run and are worse on the planet?
QUENTINkroll37 3 years ago
Get your facts straight.
Soob4ME 3 years ago
actually, diesels are cheaper to run per mile than gasoline-powered cars. and yes--per gallon of fuel burned, diesel emits more particulate matter, but per mile driven, it's actually cleaner than gasoline. not to mention diesels are more reliable.

it won;t though, thanks to California, Subaru in Japan said that it will only come over if all the states accept it as part of existing emissions standards for diesels, and California's restrictions are too stiff, I really want one though :(
mexmiler 3 years ago 3
They just need to use the same emission system as VW.
VW is set to release their line up of diesels, and the Tuareg TDI has been out for a year now.

I would TOTALLY by one as my daily driver. I'm still keeping my "in progress" wrx wagon STI conversion, but a boxer engine that gets 50mpg! It's like bringing my two favorite things together...Subarus and not giving money to the rich "big oil" ASSHOLES.
EnzoFirrari2k6 3 years ago 4
Its about cost. Sure there are better designs out there but there is a point when you aren't making a performance car that cost and performance level out so that money can be made. The reason for the top mount is the turbo placement and the necessary tubes to make a fmic would cause more lag. This engine has been very praised from all the reviews I've read. If you're so smart why aren't you designing cars?

It's a diesel, jackass. That's not piston slap, that's the sound of an engine that runs on compression and not spark.

That intercooler is a really poor design
MoPar7055 3 years ago
yeah... wonder why they put it on TOP of the engine rather than in front where the radiator is...
LMF5000 3 years ago
You probably think that the placement, on top of the engine, allows more air to pass to the radiator, its not so. Only so much air can fit in the underbonnet area, the air scoop floods it with air reducing the amount of air that passes through the radiator. Most of the air that passes through that hood scoop takes the easy route around the intercooler not through it. Not to mention the lack of surface area and tube and fin design further hurt its efficiency and make it easy to heatsoak.
MoPar7055 3 years ago
You are a retard

MoPar7055 3 years ago
Hay man you cant deny 50mpg, its pretty good! No chrysler could do that!
wielstrb 3 years ago
That is pretty good. I was speaking merely of the intercooler. But quite honestly any car company is capable of designing a diesel car that gets 50 mpg. Whether they actually decide to invest the money is another story.
MoPar7055 3 years ago 2
True, unfortunately. BMW has 3 models that get that sort of mileage that I know about, and may have others. All manufacturers should be making small diesels, and we should prosecute the EPA for keeping them out of the USA!! Even my huge 4x4 F250 Powerstroke has gotten 23 mpg at 70 MPH with the AC on!
Side41kick 2 years ago
I agree, I didn't know the EPA was keeping them out of the USA though

Air intercooler
zmass 3 years ago
Air to air; it is the cooler for the air that pass thrue the turbo and goes to the engine. By cooling this air, you end up with more oxygene per volume to the engine and by this, more HP !

5410driver 3 years ago
@5410driver they may sound different, but they are more fuel efficient, they have more torque and pollute less
fucker666477 1 year ago
@fucker666477 Actually, diesel engines exhaust a lot more pollutant than gasoline engines, especially particulates, of which unburnt carbon is the most dangerous to human health.
Widespread of diesel engines also have huge impact on many other parts of our lives. Biodiesel for instance causes many farmers (especially in 3rd world) to abandon food crops and focus on subsidised biodiesel crops. That has enormous effect on biodiversity and food prices in developing countries.
OhFishyFish 1 year ago
Mate, diesels may be a bit louder, but a tank of diesel will get you further than a tank of petrol, thats with comparable power output!!!
