The interior is not made of "cheap plastc", how you said. Have a look to most of german cars, like audi, vw, opel. there you'll find real PLASTIC in bad quality!

Carina is a spatious, fast, economical and reliable car. Also cheap to buy. Parts are also mostly cheap and easy to find. automatic transmission is also very nice (still economical, still fast)

Rear drums are better than disks at least when talking about used cars. They are much more reliable and carefree than disks.
And yes you can have ABS in drum brakes, thought there are only very few times you need them because breaking power is mainly going to the front wheels.

@Mullie0407 ..I agree man,,I've a 95 carina e saloon and I have to say it is a seriously good car,,,,there is about 216,000 miles on it and I have heard of some carina's still running perfect after 400,000 miles,,,,It's a shame they stopped making it,.....plus the latest avensis looks terribly ugly....
@parch11amp iv a 95 carina too and i agree it is a seriously good car and my has done well over 300,00 mile's and still runs a charm.and the avensis in my opinion is not that great.
The Carina II was a much tougher bird and genrally felt alot better quality then the E, which is really saying something about build as the E wasn't exacly a bag of nails.
Imo the Carina E has a much better look, it looks better than the mondeo from 90's and the escort and even better than golfs ..
And it's a fucking though car..sometimes when i push it really hard i feel sorry for it.. But it did never cause me any kind of problems .. nothing broken.. And i believe it's imortal if i service it in time!
I have a Carina e 1.8L XLI from 1996. It has now driven more than 480.000 Km (300.000 mi). The catalytic converter has just got replaced but that is the first time in this cars life. The rest of the exaust is still the original one from it was made in 1996.
I know many people who had it replaced at only 200.000-250.000 Km.
The only thing that has ever been replaced in this car except for the catalytic converter is the cooler which turned out to be a rubber hose so toyota refunded the money.
Rear drums with ABS? Mine doesn't have ABS but the Haynes book says that models with ABS have discs on all 4 wheels (with separate drums inside the rear discs for the handbrake).
So does that mean that other models with ABS have it on the rear drums too (didn't think ABS was possible with drums but Internet seems to say it can be) or does it mean they only have it on the front wheels?

Exactly.. I killed runned more several 1.8 and even 2.0 engines.. Like peugeot, or suzuki..
The Toyota A engine series is best 1.6L egines evermade..
The 4Age 20V blacktop have more than 165Hp.. that would pwn most of the 2.0 - 2.5Litres :D
I love my Xli it's cheap to drive.. cheap to repair.. And it has speed when needed.. :D

I've got a 1,6 114BHP and it's really fun to drive except you're driving it alone.
Things change when you got 4 passengers and full boot loaded. And suddenly you can't avoertake so easily...
