I'm not sure if anyone is "too good" to play 2nd. It may be an underrated chair, but it requires a special skill set either way. Some people actually prefer 2nd over Principal, depending on many factors.
@trombonejosh That would be Glassl.. from Nauheim in Germany.. I teach in the very building that Glassl had his workshop. It doesn't seem to look the the instruments that are still there from him, but I can't be sure.
