I have dreamed of becoming an opera singer since a young age,,,,and I am blessed to be living out my dream! It's a struggle, and my life consists of auditioning all over, but I wouldn't trade it for the anything else world!!!
You have to ask: How many people in the world can sing opera and even oratorio? The official answer of coarse is that only a few people in the world can sing. It is true that many are not able to play the instrument that they are born with for 1 reason or another, However, I believe that there are millions that with encouragement would make opera not so special' After all its not has hard as working in the brick yard or engineering or down the pit.
Apples and oranges. Opera singers also have to deal with other factors those other professions don't have to deal with (I, for one, can't speak let alone sing in 4 or 5 different languages. And my lifestyle doesn't affect my knowledge of chemistry while these singers can't even break their diet without it affecting their instrument... among a few other things).
With encouragement & resources millions can also do just about any other jobs out there... not just opera singing.
I agree with your last statement about encouragement. Not sure about a diet of oranges & apples especially if your a diabetic (only 2 per day unless you are on insulin). Alot of BS about diet I'm afraid! It of coarse might be hard with false teeth. Did'nt pavarotti have false teeth?
my only fear of being an opera singer is that opera won't be here in the future becuase of the economy. Art, and music is going away, while technology, and knowledge is growing.
It's my secret dream to be an opera singer... I really want it more than anything in the world, but I really just think it's too late for me. From what I've read, serious opera vocal training never starts before age 20. I used to be very involved in chorus but I quit in freshman year, and I've never been in theatre. I'm a junior in high school (17 years old), is it just too late for me to really try? How would I go about trying to prepare myself for maybe going after this?
Most singers start in their late teens, though some have grown up with operatic/musician parents.
Aslong as you're musical (pitch, awareness, taste, intelligence) and find a good bel canto/opera teacher you should be fine. Most people fail because they try to be things the are not. Lyrical singing dramatic, baritones singing tenor and so on. Best of luck! :)
i dont think that you are too late, actually, you might be a year or two too early. But many singers dont even start serious training in their early to mid 20s
@midnightmarshmallow Dame Sutherland didn't start until she was 17/18. I didn't start taking formal lessons until I was 16. Starting too early is actually more dangerous. One thing though: choir singing can put very bad habits in your voice. I'd say start now. Find a teacher who's a technician and get started. You never know what you've got until you try it out.
@midnightmarshmallow You're considered a baby in the industry! It's definitely not too late for you to start training, if that's what you really want. Some singers, for example, will complete a non-music degree in undergrad, and can still be admitted in a music conservatory for their masters. Find a good teacher (look for someone that can teach you breathing technique). You never know unless you try!
Thank you so much for posting this video. I feel a lot like the girl that the video focuses on. I hope to one day reach her level of vocality. I go to my first private lesson on Saturday (tomorrow). I'm so excited!

@MrAndrew1907 And money, unfortunately. But personally, it's worth the debt.

@MrAndrew1907 spot on, as someone who studied opera as an undergraduate, and takes a lot of work and ALOT of self-introspection

The economy won't be bad forever, most generations go through depressions.

The Ensemble was shut down due to funding being cut. Opera is suffering right now, in this economic atmosphere.
