The best interpretation of the Question is a man slightly unhinged.- An obsessive compulsive problem solver, almost like a mirror version of the Riddler. The martial arts thing to me was sort of a cop out. The Question is simply more marketable as a hero if he has a black belt rather than uses a tire iron to beat someone up- but even that misses the point- He's a detective on par with the Batman, he doesn't have to be a warrior also.

Here's why - Slade Wilson grew up more or less perfectly normally until adulthood, when he joined the army, and was experimented on by the US military - hence his increased abilities. Equinox is a bona fide freak of nature from infancy. Slade is human (for ex., his ex-wife shot out his eye) - his power is very limited, and his plans work mostly because of his mind.
