I've always taken this video as being somewhat autobiographical: the band is putting themselves and their music out there for their audience, and then all they can do is sit back and watch how people react. And some people like what they do, and some people are really moved, and some people couldn't care less about them. And all the while the band is watching from the sidelines and trying not to take it personally when people are falling asleep. By the way, I love this video.
I think this video is pretty much open to interpretation. In my opinion, it's that some people miss what's really beautiful in life because they are too self-absorbed to appreciate it.
That's just what I got from this. It's a wonderful song and a creative video.
This Side is a beautiful song and video, and so is Speak and every other video put out by Nickel Creek. Gosh I miss Nickel Creek! I am glad that Sarah is still singing with them once in a while and is still putting out the music. I LOVE those performers! They are sooooooooo great!
This is one of my favorite songs off that album... besides "Spit on a Stranger" and "Sabra Girl". Chris is adorable. He reminds me of a less attractive Rob Pattinson. ;-)
I think they made a Child's Christmas in Wales into a movie, I saw it long ago and really liked it, it kind of made me cry for the beautiful simplisity of christmas, its so commercial now days.
what he is whispering is from a child's Christmas in whales by Dylan Thomas,
"One Christmas was so much like another, in those years around the sea-town corner now and out of all sound except the distant speaking of the voices I sometimes hear a moment before sleep, that I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six."
the story of it is a girl's longing for a boy. in the end he's walking away from her and his friend is trying to convince him to stop. (another interpretation is that he is cupid/fate stopping the boy)
Loved seeing them live at Fox theatre. Very sad that it was their "Farewell for Now" tour. Hope they get back together. It's just not the same without them all together. :'(
It's the same as all of their music videos, people. It's meant to have tinges of abstraction so you have to make inferences, guess at what they're communicating with the video, and, yes, use your imagination.
Also, like any good artist, NC uses their music as the medium to communicate in their videos, no the videos themselves. It's not a movie, it's a music video.
I don't understand it -.- could you please explain??? i've always wanted to understand their music but its so hard... if you have any hints or idea's of what they are trying to say then please let me know =] but i love this song. its a great song to fall asleep to... =']
At the beginning of the song the character is trying his best scrape up the courage to talk to someone he really loves, but then at the end of the song he realizes that if the person really likes him, he could speak any way he wanted to and just be himself and it would all be alright.
lol, this comment reminds me of the time I went to a Punch Bros (the mandolin player's band) concert...and I'd traveled a really long way and I was tired...and I almost fell asleep during the Blind Leaving the Blind...even though I absolutely loved the music.
There are actually four - their bassist is never in the videos. Sadly they are broken up at present time - they are touring seperately under the 'watkins family' and 'the punch brothers' - hopefully they will get back together.
Being a shy person myself, I think it's about people who just don't pay attention to something being said by that quiet person. People are kind of ignorant and don't pay attention when I have to say something in front of a class for a presentation. I doubt this is what it's about, but it's just my interpretation from the video.
I agree with u it sounds like that'd b it (I'm a shy person too so maybe that's just wishful thinking lol). I finally just stopped trying to talk to my friends in school cause they never hear me and this kinda sounds like the lyrics r talking bout wat u said =)
@Hazeleyedpisces2 What you said makes perfect sense with the video. Sometimes we could all use a bit more consideration when others are trying to speak.
How many awards have you guys won? This record is so sweet and soft! It reminds me of a summer canoe trip on the river with no breeze, the fish jumping and the birds singing in the distance. Oh man i can taste those fish fillets right now!
My girlfriend introduced me to this while I hooked her up to radiohead. This is very unique and it makes me really happy! I like what I hear. Is that a ukelale? Whatever it is, he can play it magically, just what you want to hear.
they needed a break - they'd been together a LONG time and wanted to explore their other projects...on their website they say 'so long for now' - they will get back together - just give them a little time. I saw them on their 'farewell' tour (2nd row) and they blew me away. I'll be waiting on the edge of my seat, same as you :)
I had no idea that they might get back together. I should do my own research :P, but why when there are other awesome fans who will tell you? 2nd row though, wow, serioulsy, holy wow. I never went to a show and when they split i was so bummed, but i am going to a Punch Brothers show which is almost as amazing! Still, 2nd row! (can you sense the hint of jealousy?)
sadly, this was one of the top songs I REALLY wanted to hear at that show and they didn't do it :( Still amazing though. Check out BeGmusik08...they asked me to join their group today and one of their main influences is Nickel Creek - they sound REALLY good.
Hey thanks! I just checked them out and they are good! Thanks so much for the recommendation! I could tell in their playing where they could draw from Nickle Creek, but they are definetly unique,
One of my favorites by them. They always remind me of Autumn for some reason. I feel like I've seen the guy who cries in the video somewhere else before...
Although 'the concept' does not elude me, I still have to sasy, "what a weird video". Great song though, so 'whatever'.
I've no doubt that Nickel Creek will reunite . . . I just pray it doesn't take 20 years for them to decide to do so. Keep rockin' y'all . . . you folks are my heroes.
(Look up the lyrics, they help you understand it better.) Well this man is trying to find a nice seat in the movie theater, AKA his life, but there are so many things bothering him. Thats as much as I can understand so far.
It's a Dylan Thomas poem...somebody figured it out and wrote this: One interesting note: The whispering voice intermixed with Sara's second chorus is reading the opening sentence of "A Child's Christmas in Wales" by Dylan Thomas.
i don't completely understand why they had to "break up" either, but from what i understand it's just a hiatus...which means they will probably get back together at some point, they just want to go solo for now and 'experience' life so they can write more songs that relate better to people in a different way.
Amazing... I was a huge doubter of all things bluegrass till I listened to Nickel Creek. Beautiful vocals and music. And dear god Sara is beautiful. Her voice is amazing. All three of their voices are so clear and perfect. Just complete amazement.
Darthbetty, all I can make out is at one point he says: I can't remember if it was six days six nights when I was ten, or six days six nights when I was twelve...
I sooo love this song ... And the video. Wow - simply wow. I mean, the looks on their faces - so meaningful, so powerful. I can't take my eyes off the video when I listen to the song, and I can't stop listening to the song ... Definitely my Nickel Creek-Favorite.
But it definitly is very hard, and I can only interpret.
It's a movie theatre and you are not allowed to speak, which is the first respond to speak.
The audience is trying to enjoy a very touching movie. And it could be that the guitar player is talking to the other 2 about a girl sitting in the audience.
As the women speaks (or sings) they build a connection to the crying man.
The whole movie is more about particular moments than a telling story, I guess - interpretable for everybody.
Part of the lyrics talk about stillniss which maybe is characterised by the boy who is falling asleep during the film.
And several more isolated happenings happen while the film runs.
One guy leaves the theatre at the end and the mandoline player follows him not understanding why he is exiting such a movie, and I bet the leaver did not want to confront himself with this moving picture
This song is really beautiful and cool (just like Sean - he is so gorgeous and gifted...*sigh*) It is understated and calm but has this vibrant sparkle to it. They are awesome.
I'm not entirely positive, but I think the guy's name is JB Ghuman, Jr. He was in a short called "Starcrossed". It looks a lot like him, but I don't know for sure that it is.
i hadn't heard this song til now or seen the video, the song is so beautiful, and she (sarah?), sings so beautiful. she is beautiful, and the two guys in it are awesome too, they both sing beautifully. til now i hadn't heard this guy sing, he is awesome, and beautiful too...all three of them are so good looking and sing wonderfully.
yeah, but all three of them are awesome. I think each of them have different voices for the different moods of the songs. Sean is really good at angry songs such as Somebody more like you, or clean ones like this side. sara's also good at clean ones like sabra girl, and haunting one's like her voice in this. chris thile is great at sad and energetic song (an odd combonation)...
Does anyone know what is being whispered during this song? Every time I listen to it, it drives me crazy! Especially when he says something about 7 days and 7 nights! If someone can tell me, you'll be my hero.
It's from a Dylan Thomas story entitled A Child's Christmas in Wales.
One part reads:
"One Christmas was so much like another, in those years around the sea-town corner now and out of all sound except the distant speaking of the voices I sometimes hear a moment before sleep, that I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve or whether it snowed for twelve days and twleve nights when I was six."
What is Chris saying when he is whispering while Sara sings? I just hear the last little bit "since I was twelve." I love this song, and I've been listening to it and trying to figure out just what he's saying. HELP!
My favorite Nickel Creek song and they didn't play it last night in Wichita :( Oh well - had 2nd row seats and N.C. was very good - just wish they would have taken requests or had it in their setlist.
I've always taken this video as being somewhat autobiographical: the band is putting themselves and their music out there for their audience, and then all they can do is sit back and watch how people react. Well, I'll try.

Love this song most of all their songs, especially with Chris whispering Dylan Thomas in the background.

I love this one too. This, and 'This Side,' are my favorite songs from the band (with a few others trailing close behind them).

that is a good song i want more of her singing...and she not hard to look at.....she does have a fantastic haunting voice
sparkyfoley 4 years ago
yeah, but all three of them are awesome.

The other whispering part has:
"This was better than all the cats in Wales standing on the wall in a row," also from the Thomas story.
That's not the entirety of whisperings, but it's most of it. I hope this helps. :)

This is the song(due to the background harmonies of those boys)that got me into them in the first place

What is Chris saying when he is whispering while Sara sings? I just hear the last little bit "since I was twelve." I love this song, and I've been listening to it and trying to figure out just what he's saying. HELP!

it was likely an admission of feelings... that's the best i can figure

Supposedly it's a Dylan Thomas poem.

My favorite Nickel Creek song and they didn't play it last night in Wichita :( Oh well - had 2nd row seats and N.C. was very good - just wish they would have taken requests or had it in their setlist.
