@canadiantechnologist Yes from the states, this is a common problem with these units. I believe it's the poor quality Chinese caps, possibly under rated values on the voltage. As for protection, you can't see in the vid. but i am wearing a condom! LL

The short answer... no. Make sure it's not plugged in and to be safe take an insulated wide bladed screw driver or somthing similar and short between the cap terminals to discharge(prob. not charged but saftey first). Then unsoldier cap. take note which lead is which NEG. is usually marked on the outside of the cap.

@lunexar No power at all is not that common, being that you suffered an outage it probably suffered a voltage spike. I would start with the point at wich power is supplied to the board. i dont remember if this model has a board mounted fuse but check that as well as rectifier diods, exsessive forward bias voltage can kill diods.

i got excited when i thought this was going to be an easy fix. i found this tv in the dumpster at my apartment complex and decided it would be fun to toy with it. it had no power what-so-ever and after my little research i found that most people are replacing this z9 diode. i unsoldered the diode and checked it with my meter but unfortunately it tested good :-/ now im off to do a little more research. any suggestions would be great.
@chucaswatjfan Z9 diode is prob. a zener diode used for rectifying ac voltage to dc, so it sounds like your starting out on the right track. There should be four zener diodes that are used to make a bridge rectifier along with some capacitors for filtering. Check those caps. for signs of leakage or bloating as well as any other caps. in the main power circuit. Alot of times they will solder a fuse on the board so check for that as well.
Removed rear plastic and metal cover. Unplugged 4 connectors on pwr supply board. Removed 4 screws of pwr sup. board. Used solder sucker with soldering pencil to desolder two 1000mf, 10V caps. These CapXon caps fail maybe because of working voltage (10 volts). Installed 2-1000mf, 16V ones. They were larger than originals and didn't fit into the space so I used silicone caulk to glue them down in an open space on the board and ran wires from their terminals to the solder holes in the board.
I followed this video and repaired my same 4 year old Polaroid TV with a black screen and it would not turn it off except by pulling the AC plug at the outlet. Thanks for saving me alot of $.
i have acrappy lcd 32 inchit turns on green then the lights blink yellow either a quick 2 or 6 times
as i type right now it took me since 2-44 to and its now 3/26 to even get the screen flickering but itstil shuts off as i constantly push the power but from my remote control what could be the issue.
new Tube tv's never had problems like this in under 3 yrs of use IMO
My Lcd tv gets sound but no picture.. The picture comes on for like half a second then goes off. I was told it was a Capacitor. I hope thats all it is.
@djwiplash1 Glad to hear you got yours working. Mine is still going strong, these tv's produce such a good picture that they are worth fixing, dispite the fact you should not have to, given the age of the unit.
I have read other comments and answers I will try this, thank you so much for your answers and help! I hope this works, like I said they want to charge us over $150 to fix I have only had the TV for 3 years what a piece of crap!! THANKS AGAIN!
Okay my Same TV is not turning on! The blue light is on and nothing on the screen, for a while I used to be able to unplug the power cord after it warmed up and then I would get a picture and a loud buzzing noise that would go away after a few mins. But now I am getting nothing, what part needs to be repaired. I called a TV repair shop they said something about a module. Please let me know what part so I can get it. This video does not really list parts. Thanks everyone.
@Marilynm25 That's the problem with todays TV shops they want to replace the whole circuit board instead of doing component level fixes like this one.
nice video! My Vizio VX37L does not recognize HD channels anymore, i get a blue screen and no audio and video icon on the screen. I have an Emerson HDtv that i connected just to rule out the coax system and it picked up the HD channels fine. Is it time for a new tv? should i pay to have it fixed nly for it to go bad again?
@bluebeltatt Well it's not a power supply or back light issue. If regular tv and rca inputs work, then it narrows it down to the H.D. circuit. Maby search repair forums sorry i couldnt be of more help.
my plasma Tv with Heavy Glass screen ( ye is a very old school 42') fall of the table and fuckd up its screen :( can you tell me how much will cost a new screen ?
@changsifon I dont have an answer as to the price but for the price, you could probably new one thats larger. I would search the web for pricing before writing it off!
@porousorifice I have a new problem my Pc Screen (Samsung SyncMaster 940c) have a big problem .I think there is something with the LED's cuz when i start the Monitor it Blinks but after this it becomes dark , I can see the Icons but very smoothly
My Sonia Bravia flat screen picture went completely red on me, but I can still hear the channels volume. What could be a solution to fixing it? I have had it about 3.5 years.
@silvioz87 i had that same problem the motherboard needs to be changed ask the company of your tv where you can find one from mine was under warranty it took 45 mins to change because of the screws good luck
YEP! My NUMBER ONE bitch! The Manufactures are PURPOSEFULLY using Capacitors with Voltage Rating far too low. For instance, use of a 6.3 Volt Cap in a 5.0 VDC power line. The 1.3 Volt difference is NOT enough overhead. I always replace the Cap with the next highest Voltage Rating. And the Manufacturers KNOW THIS. But it is all a RACKET. I have saved SO MANY Computer Motherboards and Computer Power Supplies doing CAP replacements and voltage upgrades.
@MSTLOM Agreed, it really pisses me off when somthing takes a crap a month after warranty lapses. I understand the if they build a moniter that lasts 20 + years (which i'm sure they can) there brand name would become synonymous with supieor products but would probally not sell as many units due to price. I also wonder how many 40yr old Zenith tv's that worked perfectly have been thrown away over the years !
I have a record player that works fine but i cant seem to get it to work with my CD's !
@porousorifice ....I have fixed alot of electronics where the only problem was dried out Capacitors. Those basic CYBERHOME DVD Players that eventually will not power up have two Capacitors on the Power Supply Board that are crap. Soon as you pull the case and see the Board you can see them.
@leebee1989 diagnosing the problem is ussually the biggest part of the repair. Part swapping is easey as it looks, the key is to practice your soldering technique. The caps. seem to be the most common cause of the problem. It is always a gamble so for me the cost of the item in need of repair out weighs the cost of the repair by far.
I agree with some of the comments about explaining how or why you did this that and everything else. Still a great video. I'm constantly seeing faulty LCD and Plasma tv's at the markets for $20.00 for 32" so I might just take the gamble. What are the top reasons the screens stop, other than wii remotes, pots first, power supply 2nd a rough guide would help me because I'd like to fix this kind of problems, I'd get much love from the family if I brought stuffed LCD's and fix them for under $10.00
We have the Bravia Sony my nephew broke it by throwing the wii remote on it?! We have the same problem if u turn the tv on there is sound but it was pitch black? If ever were gonna do it our self wher we can buy the new screen??! Anyone can give me an idea??
To be honest, the price of the new screen wont be far off the price of a new set.
You might be better off selling the tv for spares or repairs on ebay, then putting the money you get from that towards a new tv. And make sure your kids wear the wii wrist straps!
does your 4240 go black w/sound remaining on? here's the fix...remove back plastic cover (3 screws) remove metal cover (3 screws) half way up left side find red LED, next to LED find small dip switch with four switches, move bottom switch #4 to right (on).....replace covers......repair complete....enjoy! Did mine last night, watching all evening, no "black"!
@MJDJSiddall If banging it helps, just set a hammer next to the remote for quick access! J/K
Yes, sounds like a cold soldier joint but first i would remove cover and blow out the dust bunnys and check it. You may get lucky and it just may be dusty.
My Polaroid TLX 4240B just started messing up. The picture just freezes and won't respond to any command from either remote or side buttons. The only thing we can do is unplug it until it cools off. any ideas ??? Thanks
@tworth1953 Hmm, not a common problem that i know of. The fact that it is associated with temp. leads me to believe it may be an electrolitic capacitor as there temp affects there capacitance more so when they are going bad.
All I have to say is that good people like you,are a few this days! THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this awesome tutorial (not a life saver, but a pain reliever forshure).I did mine, exactly like you show here, but my board haved 4 caps blown isntead of 2,and one of them was hidden under a large black part(don't know the name),that one was a 22o micro f @35 volts.Once again THANKS!
The symtom you describe could very well be bad capacitors, as they warm up they can go out of tolerance or even stop working as a cap. all together. The caps. are cheap so if you dont mind doing the labor, you really dont have much to loose. Look for bloated or leaking caps. an replace with same microfarad value and equal or higher voltage value.
i fixed TVS stereos and all that stuff back in the 70's and 80's IT WAS THE BEST JOB I EVER HAD. im a a/c repair guy now its ok, but I M I S S TV REPAIR SO MUCH.
What exactly are the caps that you replaced called and where can you buy them and how much on average do they cost. I don't own a LCD yet but I'm guessing that if I do get one then more than likely I'm going to have issues like this. Thanks Jeff
@cheyiennerascal I replaced two 1000 micro faurad capicitors. You can buy capacitors online or at electronic stores like radio shack. They cost around $2-$3 each. Online is cheaper!
I'm not technical at all but I came by anyway, and here are five stars for the lovely musical background (Love of My Life). Long live Freddy Mercury!! Thanks.
@0815tobey I am guessing over 70% of lcd's with these symptoms are caused by bad caps.(seems to be the biggest issue), so alot of times yeah it's that easy!
I have the Element FLX 3710. They have the same power supply board.
The two caps you showed are bulging and so is the bigger one directly underneath them. So both 1000uF 10v and the 1000uF 35V are bulging. Should I replace them with the same exact size or bigger?
Thanks a lot for this video. It worked as expected. I replaced the caps with 1000uF35v all the way around. Powers up immediately.... Works like a charm... or a TV.
Is it possible to remove the screen on my 37 inch vizio lcd tv and put in a new one? I want to do it myself, because i heard you can buy replacement screens at some stores. But does anyone know how?
@xtra7765 I am sure this can be done, most lcd's are conected with a few ribbon cables that unplug. If your talking about replacing the ccfl the job is quicker.I have no idea what a lcd screen costs but the price will dictate weither it is worth the repair.
Oh shoot. You replaced the capacitors with the same voltage as the ones you removed. The problem is the circuit is 12 volts and the capacitors need to be at least 16 volts, not 10 volts. These capacitors will probably fail in 2 to 3 years. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
@drwhoeric I wouldnt be suprised if failure of the same type happens again down the road. Seems to be under rated caps. are an issue with these lcd's.
I have a 46 inches polaroid, went black last night ,the blue light is on but no sound or picture @ all .remote do not work even to turn the tv off or on.only if I desconect the tv from the outlet suply, what can do .
Es probablemente una issue.Look bordo inversor para hinchadas o goteando gorras .. En caso de duda reemplazar. Son baratas para sustituir a diferencia de la mano de obra de diassembling todo de nuevo.
i got a lcd samsung and it takes a while to turn on..and when it does the screen has a bunch of lines in colors, turn it on and off then the line dissapear what u think is wrong with my tv..thanks
Check the ends of the lamps for darkening or blacked tubes where the HV conecters attach.Alot of times they will work only for a bit then go out once they warm up.
can anyone help me i have a flat screen 32 inch polaroid tv, i have one capacitor that is bad on the capacitor it says "10uf450v and it also says HEC" i can't not find this capacitor anywhere i have not a clue about anything capacitors so can someone plz tell me where i can find the same one? or find one that i can replace it with? thanks b4 hand to who ever replys
Hey Flyersfn87, if you cant find the caps. at a local electronics store, you can get them on ebay for about a $1 each smallest lot i've seen is 5 for $6.00.
Terrific video and I LOVE the music!I I have to admit that the whole idea of repairing my tv had me stressed out, but your video made me feel relaxed and confident that I could fix it myself.
Hi, love your video, I need help real bad, can you help to find the problem? I have an LCD LG TV when plugged in the green light comes on but the screen is blank, what component needs replaced in the tv? please please help. Also wot is that piece of music? thankyou.
As far as your tv, the symptom you describe is the same as mine.I would look for any signs of swelled caps. on the H.V. inverter board (provides power to the c.c.f.l.'s or back lights). Also check for signs of arching on or around the small transformers on the same board.
I have a Poloroid LCD-2000 TV and its an older one non HD nor widescreen and it wont turn on, I have reason to believe that the power supply brick is dead b/c theres a green light on it and its supposed to be lit and its not and usually these PS units they make an arc or a zap sound when you plug them in and this one didnt. I took apart the PS brick and found nothing wrong. this TV runs on 12VDC at 6.5 amps. any chance of running it off a jumpstart box so see if it really is the PS?
PER: oOMonkeyMagicOo Dont depend on your multimeter to check if a cap is good. You need an ESR meter. If the cap is even slightly suspect, REPLACE it. I have seen a lot of caps that were bulging and still got a good reading or a close enough value from a multimeter. If I left them in place I know the unit would have worked, but I would expect it would have failing shortly after. When in doubt replace suspect caps. Especially where voltage spikes and heat are involved in circuit operation.
I fix these things for a living ,all of these polaroids have swolen caps ,open them up look for the preg looking caps and replace .make sure you up the voltage on the new caps.
yo how long ago did u fix ? I fixed mine about 8 months ago. and now the tv is buzzing and the picture goes crazy. I opened it back up and the caps i put in look fine... any ideas ?
I would inspect the transformers on the inverter board for signs of arcing or burn marks. one other thing is to look for cold soldier joints they will look dull grey instead of shinny silver.
dude im having the same problem ive replaced the caps made sure they were put in right and when I turned the TV back on Instead of a blue screen I got a green screen as far as I can tell check your other boards and see if the cap leaked on them as that appears what happened to mine if so try cleaning the boards with rubbing alch. or call a repair man but from what ive read they dont make parts for these tvs any more
If you want to test a capacitor you test for capacitance. You look at the micro farad value on the capacitor(looks like a "uF") and if the multimeter spits out a value close to it then its a good cap. Also depending on your multimeter you may have to desolder the cap from the board.
... bueno saber! Gracias.
I did not know this board is used in other units good to know! Thank you.
thank you sooo much.. ours did the same problem and they where wanting to charge us $300 to replace it, thats half of what we payed for it!! well thx for posting this
thanks for this video. i have the same tv and i think the same problem although mine has started making a strange noise also. any hints on the noise? we have to must it and listen through the surround sound til it warms up and the noise goes away.
thanks again for the slow and deliberate steps in the video. i loved it.
bro you could ad in the info part about ppl needing to have a solder/desoldering kit and maybe a link to a video taht shows it. cuz i bet someone just opened, rip caps off then used a knife to dig a hole and put new caps in lol
my polaroid has the red light that means it has power but when i push the on putton on the remote and tv nothing happens could this be the same problem
i studied electronics and u see how the caps on the top were like push up, that's when u know the overheated and burned inside, is always better to replace them with caps a little bit bigger to avoid tthe overheat, if the overheat that means they are too small so replace it with one with more capacity....
Wow you would not believe but as i was watching this video i was holding the same exact board from pioneer lcd and i have the same problem, i am no electrician but i was suspicious of those 2 thingies and i am gonna go change mynes 2 thanks.

i have acrappy lcd 32 inchit turns on green then the lights blink yellow either a quick 2 or 6 times
as i type right now it took me since 2-44 to and its now 3/26 to even get the screen flickering but itstil shuts off as i constantly push the power but from my remote control what could be the issue.
new Tube tv's never had problems like this in under 3 yrs of use IMO

Okay my Same TV is not turning on! The blue light is on and nothing on the screen, for a while I used to be able to unplug the power cord after it warmed up and then I would get a picture and a loud buzzing noise that would go away after a few mins. But now I am getting nothing, what part needs to be repaired. I called a TV repair shop they said something about a module. Please let me know what part so I can get it. This video does not really list parts. Thanks everyone.

@Marilynm25 I replaced two 1000uF 10 volt caps. I recomend a higher voltage rating, like 16 volt . a local electronics store may stock them or ebay.

@Marilynm25 That's the problem with todays TV shops they want to replace the whole circuit board instead of doing component level fixes like this one.

@bluebeltatt Well it's not a power supply or back light issue. If regular tv and rca inputs work, then it narrows it down to the H.D. circuit. Maby search repair forums sorry i couldnt be of more help.

MSTLOM 1 year ago
@MSTLOM Agreed, it really pisses me off when somthing takes a crap a month after warranty lapses. I understand the if they build a moniter that lasts 20 + years (which i'm sure they can) there brand name would become synonymous with supieor products but would probally not sell as many units due to price. I also wonder how many 40yr old Zenith tv's that worked perfectly have been thrown away over the years !
I have a record player that works fine but i cant seem to get it to work with my CD's !
porousorifice 1 year ago
@porousorifice ....I have fixed alot of electronics where the only problem was dried out Capacitors. Those basic CYBERHOME DVD Players that eventually will not power up have two Capacitors on the Power Supply Board that are crap. Soon as you pull the case and see the Board you can see them.

Is it always this easy? I've been looking on ebay at various ones selling spare or repair, but its a bit of a gamble isn't it?
leebee1989 1 year ago

Hope this helps :)

lindseydancy1 1 year ago
The symtom you describe could very well be bad capacitors, as they warm up they can go out of tolerance or even stop working as a cap. all together. The caps. are cheap so if you dont mind doing the labor, you really dont have much to loose. Look for bloated or leaking caps. an replace with same microfarad value and equal or higher voltage value.

I have the Element FLX 3710. They have the same power supply board.
The two caps you showed are bulging and so is the bigger one directly underneath them. So both 1000uF 10v and the 1000uF 35V are bulging. Should I replace them with the same exact size or bigger?

increasing voltage value is fine even prefured. Physical size is the only issue.

@xtra7765 I am sure this can be done, most lcd's are conected with a few ribbon cables that unplug. If your talking about replacing the ccfl the job is quicker.I have no idea what a lcd screen costs but the price will dictate weither it is worth the repair.
porousorifice 2 years ago
Oh shoot. You replaced the capacitors with the same voltage as the ones you removed. The problem is the circuit is 12 volts and the capacitors need to be at least 16 volts, not 10 volts. These capacitors will probably fail in 2 to 3 years. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

The song is a cover of Queens "love of my life".
As far as your tv, the symptom you describe is the same as mine.I would look for any signs of swelled caps. on the H.V. inverter board (provides power to the c.c.f.l.'s or back lights). Also check for signs of arching on or around the small transformers on the same board.
hope this helps.

I removed "oOMonkeyMagicOo "coment by accident sorry and i agree when in dought replace it!
porousorifice 2 years ago
PER: oOMonkeyMagicOo Dont depend on your multimeter to check if a cap is good. You need an ESR meter. If the cap is even slightly suspect, REPLACE it. I have seen a lot of caps that were bulging and still got a good reading or a close enough value from a multimeter. If I left them in place I know the unit would have worked, but I would expect it would have failing shortly after. When in doubt replace suspect caps. Especially where voltage spikes and heat are involved in circuit operation.

dankdavey 2 years ago
Could the problem also be related to those defective caps that were being churned out from Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers?
I've repaired computers, TVs, home theater receivers, and a pair of M-Audio active monitor speakers because of these lousy caps.
And when I replace the caps, I always make sure to use Japanese makes (Nichicon, Rubycon, Panasonic, Elna, etc.).
As for using higher volt-rated caps, can't beat giving a little extra breathing space, eh?

He probably didn't even use a multimeter. Could you not see how swollen those caps were?
potc420 2 years ago
If you want to test a capacitor you test for capacitance. You look at the micro farad value on the capacitor(looks like a "uF") and if the multimeter spits out a value close to it then its a good cap. Also depending on your multimeter you may have to desolder the cap from the board.
milo223 2 years ago
google 'testing caps' and they use a special tester. capacitor tester i think. multimeters usually can't do the job.
Ibringthetruth1 2 years ago
it depends on the multimeter you get. My multimeter (Fluke 117) can test caps.
