  • who cares if it's singing? i love the catastrophic energy. THATS why we love punk. take an elbow, it's all good, just give one

  • I wonder if Tommy, who plays with GnR now, ever stops Axel Rose in mid-tantrum and says anything like: "You know what, you spoiled little LA vag... I was in The Replacements, so quit yer bitchin you Sunset Strippette!"

  • Look for 'The Replacements Live Archive Project' on Facebook

  • Bob Stinson was a guitar musician like D. Boon...but Westerberg got a lot of emotion out of his tool

  • @numinaII He's the most notable overall, but he sings worse then Bob Dylan! hahaha

  • @MetallicBill

If you think Paul's voice is bad, you clearly need to see an otolaryngologist. Seriously?

  • @dner75 I listen to plenty of people in music who CAN sing, even Lou Reed sings better, sorry

  • Squirellbait was from Louisville,Ky they actually came down to Lexington and somebody forgot to promote the show and the whole punk scene was at a House Party band The Misplaced was playing at. Maybe 85-86 or so. We all did Nobody's Heroes into one mike.

  • I loved them back when they were punk.

  • Good upload. It's better than the album version.

  • Hello, this is the Minneapolis police...the parties over.

  • @coughslurp That was Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum who yelled at the police!

  • @GeneralUrsus which one? the guy who yells "hey FUCK YOU" towards the beginning right?

  • westerberg was hot

  • One of the most underrated bands ever! A big influence on a lot of bands!!!

  • Gode this is sooooo fuckin cool, tommy loks like he's have a fight with that bass and might actually win !!!

  • fuck fuck fuck. i wonder what i'm missing right now.

  • With the exception of Paul's out of tune guitar, this about tight as I've heard this band live.

I've always thought Bob guitar sound was the perfect foil to Paul's songwriting talent. It would've been interesting had Bob stayed with the band longer- alcohol, drugs and manic depression just got the better of him. It almost got Paul too. Thankfully, he is still with us.

Oh well, think I'll drink a beer now and raise a toast to Robert Neil Stinson.

  • This is the best footage of the Matts. Thank God someone put this up. Such an important 80's band. Not too drunk just kickin' ass.

  • this is crazy ......where the hell did this footage come from? awesome sound

  • kids don't follow.

    never change.

  • massive

  • worst g'n'r video ever.

  • @jingodemail G'N'R'? What the Hell are you talking about? That acronym must have more than one meaning 'cause this sure as Hell isn't Guns "N' Roses.

  • A great performance, his vocals are really good.

  • Love this song.

  • I think I'll go sit on the Bob Stinson memorial park bench today (Lake Calhoun canal) to celebrate the pure genius of this band.

  • Fuck yeah! BOB!

  • Seriously tight. To read stuff over the years, one would think they were sloppy drunks all the time.

  • this is real music...geez why wasn't i round for this

    time for another music rebellion

    death to lady gag

  • one of the greatest songs EVER by one of the greatest bands EVER! if you don't get it, go buy a lady gaga record and wish you did...

  • Smokin' and Drinkin' Bob Stinson! RIP!

  • yeah..this is about the soberest paul ever played..but they were still geniuses

  • Give em' fuckin' hell Bobby....

  • Just awesome. Seriously.

  • This is a great version--they were indeed inconsistent live, so it's amazing to hear them _this early_ sounding almost professional and so passionate.

  • great quality vid considering how old it is and now sloppily the replacements usually were live

  • Wow - that was amazing..

  • amazing song

  • he's 13 or 14

  • shit!! tommy could really play that base for being only like 16 years old!!! great video

  • yeah the bass rules here!

  • lol he's like 14 or 15 here

  • The Replacements are fast becoming my favourite band!! Energetic, raw, and brilliant! Aw im in love with these guys. Wish I was living in 80s america(I may get a backlash for that on) to listen to these guys and a hold load of 80s alternative bands that have sucked me in. What an incredibly cool scene and im jealous that I wasnt part of it!!

  • Get the records! They were a truly great band!

  • OMG. Yeah, The Ramones, blah blah the fuck blah.

They were cartoon characters and the M

ats were not. Hence my love for Bob over Johnny.

  • Incredible footage of Minnesota's finest, the Mats in full throttle brain damage mode. Man, Bob could really play for a full on dipso. Westerberg still rocks today, get all his albums now.

  • Saw PW at Pantages Theater in MN. Played -Valentine- Excellent.

I too have all The Replacements as I can find, and all of PW. Hope he tours again. Heard he hurt his hand few months ago.

  • Just this summer I've gone and found Westerberg's albums of the past decade (somehow missed them) and am still amazed, fortified. The combo of Stereo/Mono is damn near perfect and Tremble does the old trick: brash and sad, down but never out.

  • sounds like fun

  • Sounds pretty great

  • This should be fun to do in the new Rockband downloadable content

  • @TeamDataDrain ugh dont mention the mats and rockband in the same sentence its not right.

  • @loyaltallie It is right because they made money.

  • @TeamDataDrain everything aint about making money :)

  • @loyaltallie It is for the business they're in.

  • @TeamDataDrain no, in the begining of the mats career they werent in the mainstream so it wasnt about money. music shouldnt be about money

  • @loyaltallie this song is in rock band

  • @Jedi4531 and?

  • They could play, Cris Mars wow, they shoulda kept him maybe they wouldnt have split .

  • Yes indeed rip Bob.He was the soul of the Nats.

  • Those Stinsons were born with a little extra magic in their fingers. RIP Bob.

  • Three friends a janitor.

Today, the kids really don't follow

  • Tommy is so *young* there!

Bob Stinson was so important to the Mats' sound and energy. What a loss :(

  • I think Tommy is 14 at the youngest in 1981.

  • the bass player is 9 yo

  • I actually like the version on Stink better. It sounds a lot more raw. And it has that awesome intro.

  • Stunning!

  • This song is cool. I gotta learn how to play this on bass.

  • Now that was very good.

  • Look at little Tommy Go.

  • such a great Fall Downstairburg

  • I remember a band in college called Squirrel Bait. Think they were in Chicago or something.

  • Squirrel Bait was Brian McMahan and I believe another couple members of Slint before Slint formed. And a damn fine band at that.

  • Anybody know what kind of amp Paul's using here? For what he's doing he's got an awesome sound-

  • It looks like a traynor bassmaster or guitar mate. it is defiantly an old traynor.

  • I want to cry because this is so amazing. Why couldn't I have been born about 30 years ago... oh well. At least I can see this. And Bush basically equals Reagan. Aren't I lucky?

  • Aw, Bob.:(

  • tommy stinson was still a great bassist even at that age. what was he, like 14?

  • I think squirrelbait deserves a standing ovation for posting these

  • fucking amazing

  • who else could get a guitar so perfectly out of tune?

  • only the 'mats could get away with it and still put on a great performance

  • It's a shame they don't get as much fanfare as the Ramones.

    Epic guitar work!

  • They wouldn't have been around if not for the Ramones

  • No wonder Nirvana named 'Nevermind ' after one of their songs.

True fucking ledgends before their time.

  • why is everyone talking about nirvana? they completely sucked compared to this.

  • Dont know who youre talking about... Im talking about the Replacements. Nirvana where a hopeless excuse for a band, who where not influenced by Paul Westerbergs great skills...then.

    Wont mention them again....ever.

    NIRVANA!!!

  • awesome quality video....

    love them

  • Didnt Tommy quit school to tour? Thats sooo fuckin swet. Too bad he's stuck in rock limbo playin with Axel Rose.

  • Wow... incredible.

  • in my opinion they are the best sounding live band.

  • Love love love love love love love LOVE IT!!!!!!! =D "Kids don't need nothin of the kind!!"

  • I love the the main riff in this song Westerberg and Stinson fucking kill on the guitar front!

  • UNBELIEVABLY good video quality! Wow. Tommy was probably about 14 when that was recorded.

  • Oh man

    Awesome

    One of my favorite songs

  • I'm not bi polar but my favorite bands in the eighties were the 'mats and grateful dead. Saw Bob in Albany, Let It Be tour. I was kinda

there by mistake, thank God. They were just oozing with f*ck you/rock and roll spirit, switching instruments, playing 1/2 songs...they saved a lot of souls from Bon Jovi and the like. I'm forever grateful.

  • This belongs in the Smithsonian. Anyone know where this is from?? Has to be the Entry... what a shithole. Good times.

Some pretty coherant stuff from them, rather refreshing. Why these guys don't get back together is beyond me. Thanks for the vid.

  • Yes it was the Entry. I saw them there a couple of times in that era. I'm absolutely floored that such relatively good quality exists of it. Amazing.

  • Great quality video! Thanks for posting, I LOVE the Mats.

  • my favorite song EVER.

i have yet to find a guitar tab for it.

    -.-

  • I hear you. I think it means we suck that we can't figure it out for ourselves. It really can't be that hard. Play on Brother.

  • PWIG... which still means Paul Westerberg Is God!

  • Awesome.

  • Stink was definately their best album. It really captures the attitude of the average apathetic teen.

  • O.o

    what?

    Stink is cool, but....

  • I totally follow. Constantly. Thanks for posting this!

  • God Bless the Replacements!

  • One of the greatest shows in the history of rock. Period.

  • 28 days before i was born. and they were rocking... god i wish i was there!

  • god bless these guys

  • don't ever take this down

  • great stuff.

  • Wow. How did you find this video? The quality, especially considering its date, is amazing. Thankyou!

  • I've been wanting to scream this song at Paul Westeberg for ten years.

  • Me too - get in line buddy ;)

  • why? just cuz he didn't "stay punk"?

  • You're right...some people are so damn shortsighted.
