@MrDwendt When shit hits the fan, you hit the freefall button. If the situation calls to use one of those, I don't want to back on the ship any time soon :D
@AgentHog normally we heaving the boat by davits,we lowered the boat into the water twice a year by a hoisting gears and 2 cylinder.nobody inside into the boat during test.....freefall lifeboat is completley difference compare to the other types.
@TheLegoman28 , Yeah on some of them. The other type of lifeboats are davit launched and are lowered horizontally to the water with a wire attached either end.
mainly the ships that transport flamable goods uses these lifebouts, they are totaly enclosed, in case of a disaster escaping the fire from the crippled ship, also these boats have a cooling mecanism lasting longer under fire
being inside one of them when its being dropped is just a whole lot of fun. i have try it once from only about 14 meters...okey, you notice when it hits water. your head is secured to the seat, and your back is being pushed into the back of the seat by the reaction force when it hits the sea surface. typical drop height from a oil platform is about 28-30 mtrs.
the boats undergoes free fall tests from 48-50 mtrs. during the certification process.
@mat8660 the things are acually very safe. The ones i have been on have full chest harness and a lot of handles too hold on to the worst that really can happen is that you can be winded. They also have ample supplies and radio equipment for people to survive for days before rescue.
anything which can sink very quickly like tankers must have fast launching lifeboats like this

@cucaratsa76 I don't think so. We still continue to carry out mandatory periodic tests like this.

With cushy soft retraint (5 pt harness) the G's wouldn't be too bad.
If you're not strapped in....your a human chicklet.

Take your pick...die in sinking boat, or die in life boat plunging into water
