Having downloaded AYBS, KUA, and season 1-2 of My Family, I've been watching them all, and it was funny for the name of a show to be Keeping Up Appearances, as it came on at about midnight, and I felt like I was being kept up.

The meaning regarding the American connotation of the word was not particularly known at that time, it just sounded funny. This type of commedy harked back to the days of Music Hall, where "Double Entendre" was an artform.
