You may need to set up your Apple Mail as an IMAP or POP to an existing online email account.
If you have a Gmail account, for example, it's very, very easy to set up your Apple Mail to IMAP with your Gmail account. Google "Gmail IMAP" for help or go into your Gmail account, choose "Settings" (top right) and click on the POP/IMAP tab, and everything should be explained in there.
