The voice, technique, & musicianship are extraordinary, but still.............., it's too slow & self-conscious, even for a concert performance. I could also do without the high note at the end. Nevertheless, Jessye is one of a kind. Thank god for her.

I can only echo others in praise of Jessye Norman: but a thank you also to Jane Glover who is conducting this. I didn't know she did 19th century operas - I always thought of her as a classical and baroque specialist - she too is a versatile and accomplished musician to match Ms Norman's huge talent.

Usually, I hate it when sopranos (even dramatic sopranos) sing arias from the mezzo-soprano repertoire (they have all the good tunes but they have to steal the poor mezzos' few great arias). But I must admit that Ms Norman's performance is truly impressive. That woman must have two sets of vocal chords, one for each repertoire!

Strange... although I am a HUGE fan of Norman, in this particular concert I much prefer Grace Bumbry's interpretation of this aria in 2003 (Bumbry is then over 60). Better diction, phrase, emotion and overall better performance. But I love both so much that I am just going to stop here and enjoy.
