You are all wrong, including Chris. Danny stated himself at his last clinic that he uses the Swiss Triplet on this groove. He does NOT alternate the snare note between right and left as Chris does here. It's not a diddle variation of any kind, it's a repeating swiss triplet...
Something I've noticed is that most people mostly only give amateur musicians credits for being able to make a good cover of an existing song. Making a cover of a song isn't that hard. When you make a cover you basically copy an other musicians beat (or whatever). Creating a beat (or whatever) out of the blue and making it sound good is much more complicated.
It's just a swiss army triplet groove over a polyrhythmic ostinato. Just play continuous swiss army triplets (variation one, for you rudiment-buffs out there). The snare falls on the 3rd beat of the triplet.
Yes this is incorrect i agree with surfrusty12. Although i must admit this interpretation is very well executed. Danny actually plays a polyrythm here. Both hands are playing doubles, and at time sound like flams. Even the previous section, at 6:00, is exactly the same as regards to the hands, just played on the snare and one electronic drum. Have a look at Rosetta Stoned 2006 New York. It will all make sense here
That is actually incorrect, as I stated probably a year ago here. If you listen closely to what Danny's hands are doing, the first two 16th notes on every downbeat are being played on the same piece, so one of his hands plays a double on the downbeat. Paradiddles, when played to a 3 or 6 count as they are in Rosetta Stoned, never produce a double on the downbeat. Danny may be playing paradiddles, but he is definitely not playing them in this pattern.
I think everybody is doing some interesting takes on this. But NOBODY is going to know the exact part...don't worry - I'm putting nobody down - just the opposite. It's not just the sticking but the textures too if it works with your band or for you and you feel good about it...it's fresh!
The gentleman in this video is employing paradiddles through out. This section is in 3/4 time hence why his snare hit changes hands every other time.
I would like to thank you for this video. I'm no real drummer but I appreciate odd rythms and coordination challenges. When I'm waiting (for a bus, a train, someone, or the end of the world) I'm used to drum on my knees and stomp my feet... I'll work this wonderful odd pattern from Tool...
Absolutely amazing. Danny is one increadible drummer; for a 15 year old to immulate it is great; I hope he takes that influence and knowledge and makes it his own one day.
I'll put up a video when I can figure out how =] but Ive played it over the cd version it matches not for note and all hits are on the left hand. but don't get so worked up all drummers have certain styles and ways of approaching other drummers material so do what makes you happy all you can do is love every minute of what you do.plus sorry for any non drummers on the wall but drummers rock! Kan I get a halelujah!
No offense to any one but the right pattern for the second use of the madala pad is plaed on 4 different pads lrllrlrlrrLrlrllrlrlrrLr snare hits on the capitol L and the fisrt pad is on the first ll. The second pad is hit at the very end with the last to (rr) right doubles, Ill try to letter it(lrLLrlrlRR then snare hit then last note hit on right on pad. The very first part when he starts playing the mandala ryhtm it is rl rl rrL thenn 2 hits on ride and alternate cymbal to ride I when needed.
i respect any drummer, cus its hard to have 4 diffrenct rythems goin at once. but where are they all?? i been searching for a drummer to jam with n nobody who plays wants to jam...
i like it. I dont think it really matters how you play it if you can get the general sound. if anyones currious about what danny plays ...
the snare hits are all left handed..but the pattern still has diddles for anyone who says otherwise. llrlrlrrLrlr is what i believe im seeing, but if not thats still the general idea.
I agree, when I learn a song I try to get the same feel, it may be played differently but it sounds generally the same. Some people want to play it as closely to the original as possible, and that's cool too.
If you watch any vid of Danny playing this part of the song, every snare hit is done by the left hand only-they do not alternate. He integrates splash cymbals and crashes on either side of his kit and goes out of pattern to do so. I don't claim to have the exact pattern figured out either, but it seems like he is using more right hand beats than left. You must also know that he does not use his toms, but his drum pads with sound effects as his medium for keeping the RLRR... rhythm.
I care because I'm a drummer as well and it makes a very minor technical difference that only drummers would care about... this is obviously the wrong post for you to be worrying about.
sdyat7 is right, you other people are retarded. He's just saying, Danny Carey does have the money for the expensive drum-pads. Whereas for someone that doesn't, they can play toms, or tom rims, or whatever. But the important part about this beat is the pattern. This kid doesn't have it, and what Danny Carey is play is 7 million times harder. I'd like to say it's just rrlrrlrrLrrl, but I know Danny would put alot more left strokes in that line up with right strokes, he's the polyrythym master
I'm curious to know what sound he has them set to and if that sound can be recreated without a drum pad (i.e. do you know what non-electronic piece makes that sound in a drum kit?) Please msg me or post back if you do.
You're wrong. Danny's playing Swiss Army Triplets with his hands. Listen to the accent that he plays with his electronic pads during the Rosetta Stoned breakdown with headphones on. The one that has that "WAKA" sound. Also, watch a video of Danny playing it. Really, you're making too complicated...plus, you're not accounting for the fact that Danny moves his right hand through 3 different electronic pads during the beat. Good luck.
I think Danny actually plays it in a simpler manner : the hand only do RRL and every 4 hits on the left hand, the snare is hit. From there, he moves his hands around multiple percussion pads, but the pattern stays the same. Try it, it works.
ok just to clarify! what danny is playing on this part is swisses! its a drum corp rhythm that is triplet based! the first beat is a right flam, the second beat is the right hand and the third beat is the left hand. total he plays this split up on 4 mandala pads! i know this because i have a dvd of him playing at a show!
Although what you're playing is cool, ingenious, and challenging, it is actually much harder than what he really plays. Watch TOOL-Rosetta Stoned 2006 New York and you'll see he always hits snare w/left on "3" and cymbal w/right on "1". On Danny's kit it makes alot more sense his way: straight sticking w/simple doubles to accommodate 1 & 3. It would be very easy to screw your version up in a live setting. I also believe you should play it however you like and I do think it is well thought out!
Good try, but this isn't what Danny Carey actually plays at all. In a bootleg I have there is a fairly clear shot of him and he is hitting his pads with all double-strokes (except for the snare hit which is always done with his left hand) in some pattern or other. Props for trying.
Type in this for search, TOOL-Rosetta Stoned 2006 New York, and you will see the correct way to play this part. Left hand definitley hits snare each time during part in question.
totally stellar. can you play the interlude from "right in two" where it sounds like drumsticks tapping on the edge of the snare....or maybe carrey does something else. anybody know?
I knew you were using paradiddles when you first started. lol, pretty good. Get some more energy and you got something good going. gratz man. maybe some cymbals...
That was quite good man, for 15 that's really impressive. I've been playing guitar for 15 years and still blow like Chicago winds, so I know how hard it is to get good at an instrument. Good work friend.
So im pretty sure he's doin a RRL pattern, you can kinda hear it too, if you listen to the samples being played, and that would work for never using your right hand on the snare
sorry...I meant that he never plays his right hand on the snare...the right hand is always playing that ostinato thing between the two drums above his floor toms(whatever they're called)...
technique and tuning problems aside, that's a pretty cool groove. the bass and snare are correct, but I'm positive that the sticking is wrong. You'll notice that D. Carey never plays his left hand on the snare and additionally he's keeping a fairly constant ostinato with his right hand between two of the drums on his right side (first two notes of a three note pattern). Maybe I'll post a video once I figure out exactly what he's playing.
the first few seconds i watched you play, i noticed 1 thing, thats like a huge pet peeve, dont wanna be like a douche like other ppl, but try to keep ur last 2 fingers on the stick, helps technique a LOT. Other than that, Super job!
I'm concerned about the flying pinky on his right hand, might slow you down if you move from voice to voice quickly...upper body (especially the shoulders) is nice and relaxed, though, which covers a multitude of minor technical problems.
Nice job, and you broke down the paradiddle combos nicely...post more, Chris!
that is perfect to a dime, i study tool drum riffs and i just need to know what the bass kick is doing with the hi hat drop. can anyone explain this to me?
this man did a kick ass job on it but to the dude who commented and said he is using toms and snare on this u are completely out of ur mind, he uses the tabala on this, he uses is a hell of alot in 10,000 days and Lateralus, like in the song jambi, its 90% tabala. its all done with his hands. which makes Danny even more of a genius. but i do give this kid props on doin this, hes got it almost right to the bone, nice job!
Dude, that takes a lot of coordination...props! It is insanley hard to play 3 time signatures at once. The only thing you are not doing is moving your left and your right hand over to other drums while playing the paradiddles. Danny Carey uses 4 drums and the snare playing that part. The bass drum is in 5/4, the snare/hihat would be 3/4...while the paradiddles are in 4/4. Crazy shit.
awsome! thats the best interpretation ive seen of that. i cant do it yet but hopefully soon. but when i seen tool live he definitaly played the snare part with just his left hand and there are 3 different electric sounds one on left & 2 on right hand. but exelent job...just tryin to help
You confused me! ahh! I'm learning paradiddles so I thought you were explaining how there played in this song. I played the tom-tom pattern on my drums, and I was like um something wrong...You forgot to tell me there was accents on the first of every set of paradiddle like
Why dont you people stop trying to learn other people's work note for note, beat for beat, and instead take their work and use its influence in your own playing.........the way all the greats INCLUDING CAREY do it. Let the man play the patterns the way he sees fit.
you dont deserve any criticism for this performance. You're a very talented drummer, especially for your age. Don't take offense to people's criticism. Most mean well. But I don't think youve got it down exactly
The more I play this, the more I'm convinced it's what Danny Carey wrote, because the bass patterns and paradiddles lock together perfectly...I also heard him play this live, and the pitch alternation was definitely that of a pradiddle pattern. To those of you saying this is wrong, you're wrong. And to you elitists saying this is "basic"...you wouldn't have thought to write it in where Danny did, so zip it.
if you listen carefully, you'll notice that it's a little triplet pattern, not paradiddles.
(16ths in 3/4 - *=16th rest): His right hand plays RR*RR*RR*RR* (over three seperate synethesia pads) while his left plays l*ll*ll*L**l (the uppercase L being the snare accent, the rest being another synesthesia pad. There's nothing wrong with what chris fox is playing as far as interpretations go; Music is derivatory, so if it grooves for him thats fine. But for exacting purposes, I'd have to dispute.
Oh .. and a note about transcripts .. those are simply other interpretations of a song by musicians. You'd be hard pressed to find the sheet music for this song authored by Danny Carey himself.
Just because Danny Carey is badass doesn't mean he chooses the most complex methods to get his point across. Either way .. I wish I could play like this kid when I was 15. Great job man !
I'd be curious to find out how some people can say they know "exactly" how Danny Carey performs this (or any) song. Sure you can have a great ear, and have played drums for X number of years .. but you never REALLY know. Unless you were standing over him when he recorded it .. which I doubt; or you've had the privilege of standing over him while he performs it live which I again doubt.
the way to figure out how it's played is simple. listen to the song. hear the different sounds. watch how he plays it live. i agree, that all parts of the song are not recreated exactly live, but certain standard patterns, such as the one played in this section of the song, take lots of practice and are not really improvisational sections. we know the setup that danny uses and can therefore "figure out" what was played.
they recreate their CD in their live show pretty damn well for that exact reason. it's all muscle memory and they played it a zillion times before even stepping foot in the studio. i have 2 of the mandalas danny uses and i can play that part no problem with simple RLRLRL sticking, hitting various zones on the drums. recreating is easy, but to say you know his exact sticking method is retarded.
i have to disagree. i had the pleasure of being in the first row to the left of the stage in the last san diego concert and made sure to watch his sticking on this section. i am fairly certain that mrfizzycola has it correct. honestly all i am certain about is that the right hand plays three different pads in a triplet pattern, and the left hand plays the snare.
well then it's official! you sat in the front row and amidst the lights/sound/commotion .. not to mention through all the hardware, cymbals and drums saw exactly how it's played. please post a video so we can put this thread to rest!
btw .. i sat with my head touching the ceiling at their warm up show at gammage auditorium, right over him, with binoculars. there was more going on than just a triplet pattern with left on the snare. much more.
I'm not putting the guy down, he posted a "how to" and I was merely saying that it wasn't exactly correct. How about this valek, learn to read music and go buy the transcripts.
it sounds good but its absolutley not correct. it would be very easy for danny carey to use just straight paradiddles ;-) it goes like this :
RR RR RR RR
L LL LL l L
every double hit with right hand is on different drum and sometimes there is second drum played by left hand too, but most of this part is left hand just on one drum. small l is snare drum always by left hand
Not terrible, but once again not quite correct, got the bridge part pretty close though. The paradiddle thing is pretty basic though. Also at the end you change tempo more than once. Not bad at ALL for 15 though, keep practicing.
you just saved my life, seriously... i've been playing for 11-12 years so i'm pretty good, but i never have the discipline to figure out exactly how some intricate parts go.. this will help big time
This kid is 15 and he already knows how the beat could be played; why are guitarists and bassists critical of the way its played? Of course it doesn't sound exactly like the album - have any of you seen how expensive a kit like Danny's is, or the process of studio editing? Leave the kid alone - he's not trying to "teach" anyone how to play, he's showing that he can listen and learn like anybody else.
dude no offence or anything but c'mon? that doesnt sound a bit like danny's beat not even the bass drum part. like i dont know how to play it. but i do know that song well cuz i play it on bass and guitar and i work along with the drums . get a better set. maybe some mandala pads and maybe try again.
no such thing as "wrong technique". i am fortunate enough to have taken lessons from the most in-demand studio drummer in the US, and he is entirely self taught and uses no technique other than what feels good to play
great job trying to figure this thing out but this is how it's actually done: rlrr lrll rlrr Lrrl rlrr lrll rlrr Lrll and back to the beginning, it's a little tricky with that note switching to the right hand, but i've seen DC doin it, i would like to see a video of you doing this so everybody shuts up.
the title should be "chris fox-explaining: how to play rosetta stoned" three wors make all the difference!

Yea, I can't do this at all. This guy is gifted, like all good drummers are. I commend you, good sir.
bobshouse123 3 years ago
great job...really.
but your kid sounds like you were playing on some empty bottles.

not everyone has an insane kit like danny carey. plus hes 15 you arent going to have insane stuff that young.
ParabolH 3 years ago
wow. nice job pretty impressive
echoe09 3 years ago
totally stellar. can you play the interlude from "right in two" where it sounds like drumsticks tapping on the edge of the snare....or maybe carrey does something else. anybody know?
trackdude3 4 years ago
he uses a Mandala pad for everything here (except for snare of course) and in right in two.
bom2 3 years ago
not to run you down, you got more talent than i do. pretty tight man
MacMan282 4 years ago
I knew you were using paradiddles when you first started. lol, pretty good. Get some more energy and you got something good going. gratz man. maybe some cymbals...
MacMan282 4 years ago
wow you gotta straight the fuck up be born with that shit!

thats fucking retarted...the odd drumming patterns in tools music...triplets...talented little bugger...goddamn shit the bed...

i just fav'd and 5'd that!
i've been an on-and-off drummer for about 12+ years and i haven't even figured out that song yet! WELL DONE! :D
rwp80 4 years ago
That was quite good man, for 15 that's really impressive. I've been playing guitar for 15 years and still blow like Chicago winds, so I know how hard it is to get good at an instrument. Good work friend.

and yet maynard's such a catch; yet a hetero like me would suck his dick to have his talent.
averyellis 3 years ago
So im pretty sure he's doin a RRL pattern, you can kinda hear it too, if you listen to the samples being played, and that would work for never using your right hand on the snare
gwelymernan 4 years ago
Wrong or not. Pretty tight.
Colour34 4 years ago
sorry...I meant that he never plays his right hand on the snare...the right hand is always playing that ostinato thing between the two drums above his floor toms(whatever they're called)...
TrilokGurtu 4 years ago
RRL
gwelymernan 4 years ago
technique and tuning problems aside, that's a pretty cool groove. the bass and snare are correct, but I'm positive that the sticking is wrong. You'll notice that D. Carey never plays his left hand on the snare and additionally he's keeping a fairly constant ostinato with his right hand between two of the drums on his right side (first two notes of a three note pattern). Maybe I'll post a video once I figure out exactly what he's playing.
TrilokGurtu 4 years ago
now take the snare of your snare drum and tune it

Nice job. Fix your snare sound :)
theSyringe 4 years ago
the first few seconds i watched you play, i noticed 1 thing, thats like a huge pet peeve, dont wanna be like a douche like other ppl, but try to keep ur last 2 fingers on the stick, helps technique a LOT. Other than that, Super job!
Kelavmeister 4 years ago
Thanks for the little tute Chris that was awesome.
tholcx 4 years ago
Awesome job dude
Thinchap 4 years ago
I'm concerned about the flying pinky on his right hand, might slow you down if you move from voice to voice quickly...upper body (especially the shoulders) is nice and relaxed, though, which covers a multitude of minor technical problems.
Nice job, and you broke down the paradiddle combos nicely...post more, Chris!

His "sqeaky pedal" is more than likely better than anything you ass-clowns can pull off. Nice chops Mr. Fox.

Dude, i'm 6'2 and sit even higher than that...
thefartingdonkey 4 years ago
this man did a kick ass job on it but to the dude who commented and said he is using toms and snare on this u are completely out of ur mind, he uses the tabala on this, he uses is a hell of alot in 10,000 days and Lateralus, like in the song jambi, its 90% tabala. its all done with his hands. which makes Danny even more of a genius. but i do give this kid props on doin this, hes got it almost right to the bone, nice job!
toche228 4 years ago
Danny uses electronic pads he helped develop for the tabla parts. He doesn't use a tabla live.
He does play though, and he probably did the tabla parts on the album on a real tabla. But live he used his electric mandala pads.
wonthefu 4 years ago
that was fuckin good,

sweet chirping pedals
oscardung 4 years ago
Dude, that takes a lot of coordination...props! It is insanley hard to play 3 time signatures at once. The only thing you are not doing is moving your left and your right hand over to other drums while playing the paradiddles. Danny Carey uses 4 drums and the snare playing that part. The bass drum is in 5/4, the snare/hihat would be 3/4...while the paradiddles are in 4/4. Crazy shit.

tarotfest 4 years ago
You confused me! ahh! I'm learning paradiddles so I thought you were explaining how there played in this song. I played the tom-tom pattern on my drums, and I was like um something wrong...You forgot to tell me there was accents on the first of every set of paradiddle like
rLRR lRLL
or
>RLRR >LRLL
lol-

YOu rock, but god damn those Hi-Hats and thier stand are weak. What brand are they?
Huitzel 4 years ago
Hey buddy, you're embarassing yourself. If you listen carefully, there are no paradiddles at all. look at chris fox's video
DavidRiley 4 years ago
Why dont you people stop trying to learn other people's work note for note, beat for beat, and instead take their work and use its influence in your own playing.........the way all the greats INCLUDING CAREY do it. Let the man play the patterns the way he sees fit.
nectarguru 4 years ago
you dont deserve any criticism for this performance. You're a very talented drummer, especially for your age. Don't take offense to people's criticism. Most mean well. But I don't think youve got it down exactly
jayndev 4 years ago
The more I play this, the more I'm convinced it's what Danny Carey wrote, because the bass patterns and paradiddles lock together perfectly...I also heard him play this live, and the pitch alternation was definitely that of a pradiddle pattern. To those of you saying this is wrong, you're wrong. And to you elitists saying this is "basic"...you wouldn't have thought to write it in where Danny did, so zip it.
surfrusty12 4 years ago
if you listen carefully, you'll notice that it's a little triplet pattern, not paradiddles.
But for exacting purposes, I'd have to dispute.
mrfizzycola 4 years ago
thank you, you got it
cranstonman 4 years ago
Oh .. and a note about transcripts .. those are simply other interpretations of a song by musicians. You'd be hard pressed to find the sheet music for this song authored by Danny Carey himself.
rsmith462 4 years ago
Just because Danny Carey is badass doesn't mean he chooses the most complex methods to get his point across. Either way .. I wish I could play like this kid when I was 15. Great job man !
rsmith462 4 years ago
I'd be curious to find out how some people can say they know "exactly" how Danny Carey performs this (or any) song. Sure you can have a great ear, and have played drums for X number of years .. but you never REALLY know. Unless you were standing over him when he recorded it .. which I doubt; or you've had the privilege of standing over him while he performs it live which I again doubt.
rsmith462 4 years ago
the way to figure out how it's played is simple. listen to the song. hear the different sounds. watch how he plays it live. i agree, that all parts of the song are not recreated exactly live, but certain standard patterns, such as the one played in this section of the song, take lots of practice and are not really improvisational sections. we know the setup that danny uses and can therefore "figure out" what was played.
cranstonman 4 years ago
they recreate their CD in their live show pretty damn well for that exact reason. it's all muscle memory and they played it a zillion times before even stepping foot in the studio. i have 2 of the mandalas danny uses and i can play that part no problem with simple RLRLRL sticking, hitting various zones on the drums. recreating is easy, but to say you know his exact sticking method is retarded.
rsmith462 4 years ago
i have to disagree. i had the pleasure of being in the first row to the left of the stage in the last san diego concert and made sure to watch his sticking on this section. i am fairly certain that mrfizzycola has it correct. honestly all i am certain about is that the right hand plays three different pads in a triplet pattern, and the left hand plays the snare.
cranstonman 4 years ago
well then it's official! you sat in the front row and amidst the lights/sound/commotion .. not to mention through all the hardware, cymbals and drums saw exactly how it's played. please post a video so we can put this thread to rest!
rsmith462 4 years ago
btw .. i sat with my head touching the ceiling at their warm up show at gammage auditorium, right over him, with binoculars. there was more going on than just a triplet pattern with left on the snare. much more.
rsmith462 4 years ago
Not many people out there could pull this off... good job.
tommytime555 4 years ago
I'm not putting the guy down, he posted a "how to" and I was merely saying that it wasn't exactly correct. How about this valek, learn to read music and go buy the transcripts.
aereumde 4 years ago
it sounds good but its absolutley not correct. it would be very easy for danny carey to use just straight paradiddles ;-) it goes like this :
RR RR RR RR
L LL LL l L
every double hit with right hand is on different drum and sometimes there is second drum played by left hand too, but most of this part is left hand just on one drum. small l is snare drum always by left hand
elcaporegime 4 years ago
Not terrible, but once again not quite correct, got the bridge part pretty close though. The paradiddle thing is pretty basic though. Also at the end you change tempo more than once. Not bad at ALL for 15 though, keep practicing.
aereumde 4 years ago
damn dude quit putting others playing down and show us how to really play the damn song then..since you seem to knoiw..

That DOES sound like Danny's beat -what would a guitarist know? Well done Chris
blownbowtie 5 years ago
This kid is 15 and he already knows how the beat could be played; why are guitarists and bassists critical of the way its played? Of course it doesn't sound exactly like the album - have any of you seen how expensive a kit like Danny's is, or the process of studio editing? Leave the kid alone - he's not trying to "teach" anyone how to play, he's showing that he can listen and learn like anybody else.

Sorry Chris...that comment was for TOOL111 or whatever that losers name is. Keep Rockin!!
Sarahsdaddio 4 years ago
dude no offence or anything but c'mon? that doesnt sound a bit like danny's beat not even the bass drum part. like i dont know how to play it. but i do know that song well cuz i play it on bass and guitar and i work along with the drums . get a better set. maybe some mandala pads and maybe try again.
Toolguitarplayer 5 years ago
what makes me laugh are all these people 'your doing it the wrong way man' make a video and show us how to do it then pompous prats.
Hoojakapiff 5 years ago
it's alright but, realize that you need to tune your drums for real and get a better set before its gonna sound good
wmosiris 5 years ago
no such thing as "wrong technique". i am fortunate enough to have taken lessons from the most in-demand studio drummer in the US, and he is entirely self taught and uses no technique other than what feels good to play
danntrev 5 years ago
now, drums doesn't do notes.. but your toms sounds like they're out of tune.
could be the camera and it's audio caption anyway.
but if you play that way the bridge of rosetta stoned it could also be played w/o paradiddles.
i know this, because i'm a drummer and i don't try to 'show' people my skills wich seem to be applied wrong anyway.
like toddwj86, you should hit the snare with either your right or left hand ALL the time.

great job trying to figure this thing out but this is how it's actually done: rlrr lrll rlrr Lrrl rlrr lrll rlrr Lrll and back to the beginning, it's a little tricky with that note switching to the right hand, but i've seen DC doin it, i would like to see a video of you doing this so everybody shuts up.
