i changed 50 percent of my water already after i found my gold fish dead on the filter then 2 more died the water still looks yellow do i need a new filter or what
interesting vid... just a couple questions.. what do you call swooning? and if you know, what is the swimming with the head up? its what mine tend to do just before they die.. or they put their head to the heater and just hang there before they die...
Dont get your Nitrite and Nitrate mixed up - the nitrogen cycle is Ammonia - Nitrite - Nitrate. Nitrate is the end of the cycle and is used up by plants and water changes....
i have also nearly used up a whole 250ml of prime to try and solve the problem but nothing is helping, all my fish seem healthy and the water is nearly back to normal but im still getting extremly high ammonia readings. All the fish are still alive and none ae showing any sign of stress or pain. They are also eating perfectly fine. could u please send a message if you have any idea of how to help me on this problem and can everyone please like this so i can get help.
hey i have a 66 gallon oscar tank with three silver dollers a slying fox and a small common pleco. I just came back from a 3 day holiday to find my tank in a horrible condition. The water was so cloudly i struggled to see my oscar. I have tested the water and the ammonia is sky high. the ph is also very low, the tank was in perfect conditon before i left. i have been doing 20 % water changes every day for four days and nothing is helping.
You have the nitrogen cycle mixed up in your first note.
It starts out as uneaten food, fish waste, and dead plant material turning into Ammonia. Bacteria converts this to Nitrite. Then another form of bacteria converts that to Nitrate.
Keeping your tank clean will avoid the vicious cycle from spiking uncontrollably to toxic levels, especially in a new tank.
I change the water 2weekly, rinse foam pads in dirty water before i put them back in tank.
Add water conditioner to new water before i pour it in. Everything is clean. I feed it every other day, pellets mostly, but a bit of spinach as a treat weekly.
i have a problem i have a under gravel filter but no power head so it just sits with the tubes open and i put a air tube down in the undergravel filter tube and black things came flying out..... it that ammonia
couple of problems here.... one is that the nitrate is the final product of the nitrogen cycle not nitrite!... Nitrite is almost as toxic to the fish as the ammonia! Nitrate is an irritant but in some quantities it is essential for the growth of pants, however it is not "toxic" to the fish. Second is that the video shows tap water conditioner being poured in to the take straight from the bottle... this is HIGHLY inadvisable as this chemical can be overdosed! 70s porn music is never good either!
My tank always has high nitrate. It's a 55 g with a Bala shark african fetherfin catfish striped raphael cat black ghost knife and angel fish. I think I lack changes. U can check out my tank on my channel codypebbles123 on the fish hooks video. Ps the video is stupid but I love ur vids!
tht was help full. ive got a fluval edge 23 letr tank im had up and running for one day with just freshwater and filter. day later i bought a rosy barb and a paradise fish then i put in a live plant let the fish in the bag for two hours i let thm out thy have been ok im wondering if i did it write. should i put a heater in ?? (fresh water)
@supersanchez1991 I know this is really late... But if you are doing a regular cycle ( with fish) you have to do regular water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels safe.
just found out that i had an ammonia spike, noticed a fish on the floor not really moving. didnt pay attention till next day when a couple were like that. tested and amonia came out high, used aqueon ammonia nuetralizer but cant notice a difference in the fish, some seemed to be a little more active but not as much.. how long till they recover would you think?
@Timespartan111 No, that really isn't a good idea. Goldfish are extremely dirty fish and if you have a filter with no cartridge, it's just sucking in dirty water and releasing it back into the tank cause the cartridge isn't getting the little particles. I would recomend getting a cartridge. They aren't all that expensive. Your's especially won't be because you only have a ten gallon. Hope that helped a little.
The nitrogen cycle is Ammonia--> Nitrite --> Nitrate
Ammonia poisoning isn't the same as nitrite poisoning. And the levels of Nitrate required to cause an adverse reaction in all but the most sensitive of fish are often much much higher than they should ever get to in a properly maintained tank.
Ammonia poisoning burns the gills, hence the symptoms.
Nitrite poisoning affects the CNS often causing skittish behaviour and twitching/rolling
I had 4 platies, 4 cories and a betta in my 10 gallon tank, two of my platies died, I check the ammonia and nitrite levels and they had some, this clip I saw woould work with them and what chemicals to i need
I live in UK and noticed that you have a live water tester. Over here I do not seem to be able to find a tester that tests PH & Nitrate. There are only single PH testers. Can you tell me where you bought the live tester you show in the video.
all my fishes' (except the bristlenose pleco) have severely inflamed gills. but my parents for some weird reason dont want to do a water change. is there stuff i can buy to get rid of ammonia?
Thank you for a VERY informative video. Now I just have it confirmed that this is what has happened in my tank... probably from having to do 90% changes over 3 weeks to treat for camallanus worms :O( Please, can you tell me where I could get a water tester like that Mardel one you had. I live in NZ. Kindest regards.
DUDE!!help!! my tank had a ammonia prob rite so i got the ammonia rock bags ammo lock n small water changes, still toxic,so i made a quarentine tank put all my guys in cuz their obviously ill, cleaned and scrubbed new water tap conditioner and even 7.0,1hr later i test the clean ass tank with fresh clean ass rocks and still AMMONIA AND NITRATES NOW!!AND NOTHING ALIVE IS IN IT yet!!!HELP!and stress coat makes amonia worse, aloe is a plant and plants decompose they make amonia!
My fish has been acting funny I moved him out th tank hes been acting like it for almsot a week now. I told her the symptoms and she said it sounds like he has Organ damage from ammonia poisioning just keep the water pristine clear and give him time to recover.
Can my fish die from it? And do you know any things which will help if that is whats wrong with him?
i just started cycling my fish tank, and i heard that i should not change water in my tank yet. is it true? how long do i have to wait? how long those a the cycle last?
Our goldfish has got nitrate poisoning, the pet shop assistant advised third water changes until the level got down. I usually do weekly 20% and the tank has been fine until this last few weeks, what happened I don't know. 3 days on it's down to where it should be, the test stick says everything's ok - but the fish is still not right, his dorsal fin is flat and he is mostly at the bottom.
I'm hoping it's not too late for him - I suppose there's nothing else I can do now but wait and see.
my fish is missing a lot of scales in one area on his sides and theres alot of dark dark spots D: he still eats and swims and i just finished cleaning his fish tank today, whuts wrong with him :( the spots are all in that area where he lost his scales and hes not bleeding but just scales are missing and dark spots on him.
Are all your instructional videos seriously this misinformed? That is not at all how the Nitrogen cycle works... Ammonia isn't simply a sort of poisoning that happens due to lack of filtration. Ammonia spikes happen when you don't cycle your tank before adding fish. And by cycle I mean actually CYCLING and not just waiting around with an empty tank. You seriously should try taking a few minutes to read what you're trying to teach people... before you make a video about it.
I just got 5 red belly piranhas that are 3 inches each in a 55 gallon tank. It's been about 2 weeks now since i have them. I been thru a lot within the couple of weeks having my piranhas. The water in my tank was being treated a couple of weeks before I actually got my piranhas. Now my water is bad. My Ph is good but the ammonia is bad. So i've been doing water changes.
My cichlid hides out and wont come to the surface to feed anymore, or eat at all for that matter, but those are the only symptoms I have noticed. I had a fish die earlier after he started doing the same thing. My nitrite is high, about 2 ppm, and nitrate is high too, like 10ppm. I do a partial water change every 3 days, but the nitrite won't go down. Any ideas on whats happening?
I gave a 55 g and it's still going through the cycle. Is it ok if I add ammonia clear to the water after I make a water change to improve the ammonia lvl or is it just for established aquariums?
Anyway, shouldn't you condition the water before adding it to the tank? i have a 35 Gallon tank, and i allaways condition the water 1 hour before beginning the Water Change.Thats just me anyway.

My Comet fish is having the same problem. Gasping at the top of the tank for the last 24 hrs.
Its in a 40 gallon tank with plenty of space(it's on it's own ATM). Fluval 4plus filter, but i don't have a air bubble thingy in the tank.
