If you really want to come up with a 'spill proof bong', go for it. Have fun with it. I'd recommend just keeping a pen and paper handy to write/draw ideas on. Draw different shapes, and think about the physics of things. Also, look at what is already out there on the market that you might be able to improve on, or take some ideas from. One of the main problems is breaking the downstem, or the neck, when the mouth-piece hits. I'd say a broken downstem is more of a concern than a spill. Good luck.
