terry was so underrated. i am a musician and he is definately in my top 5 best ever guitarists, and in my top 10 on vocals. check out my video impersonation of colour my world.
The best way to demonstrate to classic rock listeners how exciting and innovative Terry Kath was would be to produce a radio showcase, alternating between Hendrix' best-known studio/live recordings and examples of Terry's sound. They'll be thinking they're by the same guitarist after the first 20 minutes.
@CircleCityEric The radio playlist is: 1. "Hey Joe" 2. "Uptown" 3. "Purple Haze" 4. "Poem 58" 5. "Fire" 6. "25 Or 6 To4 Live at Carnagie Hall" 7."Freedom" 8. "I'm a Man" 9. "Axis Bold as Love"
THIS is Chicago.....not the"train wreck "that tours today. This was poorly recorded....but you can tell that the performance was really good. I remember that tour in 1977. I saw them at three major venues in NYC that year.
...but if you describe the rest of the band as a "train wreck" then the driver of the train (Engineer) was Terry Kath. And although it was an accident, it was still a careless action and his own responsibility.
For some reason, the vocals on the Chicago 'X' album were really poorly recorded; you could barely hear the singer over the instruments; here, it's nice to hear Terry's voice turned up...
Too sad. Hendrix said that Terry was the greatest guitarist in history. That being said, it's amazing Hendrix was rated #1, but Terry did not even make the list of Top 100 guitarists of all time. Like he's just plain invisible.
Yeah, it is very sad ... pathetic in fact that Terry isn't give the respect and credit he deserves! Chicago was playing at the Whiskey a Go-Go in LA in 1968. Jimmy Hendrix was there ... he said to Walt Parazaider (sax), "Hey man, your guitarist is better than me" and then said to Chicago's manager, "Man, I'm pretty good, but that cat blows me away" -- what a huge set of compliments. Terry must have been thrilled, as he was in awe of Hendrix.
Definitely one of the best songs from Chicago X. I love the huge, loud, big band-rock sound of this one. The lyrics are great too. It doesn't take itself seriously at all, and casually conveys the message of "Hey, we're both pretty screwed up in the head, we're pretty alike, and we've got chemistry".
Low on the list, unfortunately. Most favorite to least favorite, my albums go: V, XI, Stone Of Sisyphus, VII, II, III, Chicago Transit Authority, VI, 17, 16, XXX, VIII, Hot Streets, 19, X, XIV, 13, 18, Twenty-1.
Not well. This song demonstates how boring and derivative the band was/had become, Even the horn section steals the riff from Otis Redding's I Can't Turn You Loose.
i disagree, its one of my favourite songs of terry kath and chicago and i love the sax solo, it shows chicago jazz roots in full force until they became a mostly ballad based band. by the way it sounds completely different to I Can't You Loose
"Once or Twice" is one of my favorite Chicago songs, and I have never seen or heard it performed live before. What a talented band, and what a talent in Terry Kath. I was 16 when he died, and I remember crying when my friend told me he was gone. He is missed to this day, and he will always be missed by those who loved the original Chicago.
A Hall of Fame performance from a Hall of Fame band. The fact that this is on the same album as IYLMN shows how versatile they were. And Chicago X isn't even a great album! They did so much and are so underappreciated. Looking forward to seeing them again this summer!
I started listening to Chicago when I was 11 in 1972. I remember that I liked Peter's songs. As I bought the albums I used to skip over Terry's stuff because I was just too young for it. In 1976 a girl I liked was killed in a car accident. Terry's AM Mourning (Chicago II) comforted me. I became a great fan of his in 1977 shortly before his death in 1978. Still miss him to this day.
it is heart breaking to see this man.what a power.what an unfortunate death.chicago died that evening..,but was it suicide? you hold a gun to your head and pull the trigger, that's no accident !!!
ya, it makes me wonder what was going thru his mind when he had pulled the trigger, but one might think he knew what he was doing that day, he was drunk, and possibly on drugs, To bad it had to happen!!! RIP
If that song doesn't make you want to get up and cut the rug or bust a move, NOTHING will. Terry was magic on this song....but then again, Terry was magic on ALL his songs.
Wish I could have been there!

Something like that, anyway. Any other ideas?

I have no harsh words for the other members of the band.
Yes they lost Terry, (lead vocal/lead guitar) & no band could lose these leads without being devastated,
...but with 6 band members left, were they supposed to stop making music, stop playing the old songs?
What would you do if you were one of the remaining members?
I loved Terry and still do.
...but if you

How come Terry doesn't get the cred he deserves.....? For God sakes he was Hendrix's favorite guitar player along with Billy Gibbons!

On a lighter note. I like how on the studio version of this song, at the end he sings,
"Won't cha give it up
Won't cha give it up
Don't cha know the spirit of this stupid song."
That's classic Terry.
