actually the young females are just as dangerous as an adult female because they have higher toxicity of the venom, just less quantity. also adult males are usually brown, and young females usually have white and red patterns on their abdomens that usually go away as they mature, however that is only for l. mactans (southern black widow) L. hesperus (northern black widow) usually keeps the markings on the back
