I got really crushed today by a chess puzzle. I spent a long time getting the first few moves of the sequence, and then spent about half an hour pulling my hair after that. I just guessed a few moves, and one of those two or three guesses was correct, but then I couldn't even find the final moves, even then! When I checked the solution, to make matters worse, one of my initial thoughts about the finishing move was correct. I just couldn't see it, even after all my work. Chess can hurt . . .
@mraxeguy I know what you mean. It can be frustrating. I would suggest not guessing though! Try to be as concrete as possible. It might help to get a pad of paper and write down each variation until you are satisfied that you can rule one out. Solving puzzles is a great way to improve though. Chess is a skill and puzzles are an active way to exercises your chess muscles. My teacher had suggested approaching real games like I would a puzzle, but I would run out of time with that approach!!
@isayoldchap1 Thanks for the reply. I mean, I only guess AFTER I'm completely frustrated. But yes, there's satisfaction in seeing a variation through to the end . . . it's really a mental battle with one's self to stop being lazy and finishing at 4 moves, and to really push and see the next 2 or 3 critical ones. It's an ideal we all want, isn't it? I appreciate puzzles and studies and their composers, of course. And yes, it's not a very time-efficient process for a game haha :).
