  • You know, being a surfer and liking my comfort at the end of the day, I believe I'll just go with the full quilt, as the car's never that far away, but thanks again Shug, for the info, you again enlightened my curiosity. However, the more I see your videos, I'd love to hang out, ha! ha! did you see that? hang out!...... hammock?... Oh well, yes hang out and go on one of your trips. Still I really enjoy the vids, keep em comin' ! Take care Shug. Kind regards

  • @doctordonuthin Good one feller)))))! I laughed. Full quilts are nice.

  • This is my Favorite Video to watch from you....

  • Oh well keep it up 'cos it sounds great. The juggling is great too, saw the one when the hammock collapsed, is that part of the act? Only joking. Say, do you know why most people I see on the net go for the 3/4 length under quilts and not full ones? Wouldn't ones feet get cold. As you can see this is quite new to me, but I can't wait to try it out soon at the Ashdown forest, you know, Winnie the Poo country.

  • @doctordonuthin Well 3/4 take up less room in the backpack....valued real-estate!

I put a Thermarest sit-pad in the footbox of my Top Quilt and that works for me. Also in real cold I put my down vest or parka around my hammock at the feet as I am not wearing it.

  • Ha! Ha! Man, You're really funny. You should have your own t.v. show over here (U.K.). The outdoors is fun, but you bring so much more to it, and great ideas. The whole package. Do you play your bluegrass live?. My girlfriend hales from Minneapolis, so we'll have to check it out if you are gigging next time we're out there visiting her parents. Both fans of blue grass you see. Take care and keep 'em coming.

  • @doctordonuthin Cheers and thanks....I am too much of an under-achiever for a show on the tube!

I am just a bluegrass jammer for the most part. My juggling show is my bread and butter.

  • haha nice he's rocking the canadian dinner coat all dressed up ready for a big night out on the town haha thats when you know your ready to party this guys awesome. shuge your the man thanks for the free videos and the time you put into them.

  • @mrsuperterd My joy and pleasure to do them. Gives me something to edit for a few hours in the Man Cave.

  • Shug

I can not believe I have spent the last hour and half watching your hammock video series. However, I am glad I did! I do not know what mental institution you escaped from but with your skills they will never find you. The information that you have expanded my knowledge base with is worth its weight in Prozac. I thank you and Derick Hansen for including a link to your special little place in cyber space in his book The Ultimate Hang.

  • @debuss62 Right Good))) Glad it helped or inspired you to hang.

I accept my madness and display it on the front porch.

  • 1:16 looks like you 50 years old 1:10 looks like you 29. What a nice camera you have

  • @vaidotas86 I am both but actually 53 but today feel 79 1/2 )))))

  • So you do your own camra work like surviver man? You always bring a smile to my face and a chuckle to my belly! The rap was great! Please tell me you have a record dell! Wow, just saw you juggalling, what can't you do? You are a renisaince man if I ever saw one...and liveing behind the reniasance fair in Texas in my youth I have seen plenty. Now I am in Oregon though.

And that stick is stabbing me in the crotch...you almost made me spit out my drink with that line!

  • @zekehooper I do just self-film. I really like doing my own shots. No....no deal)))) just goofing around. Juggling is my job so backpacking stuff is just my muse.

  • Just watched all ten segments, in one sitting ... Thanks! ... Now, fer some left-overs !

  • @phrankus2009 Hardcore!!! Bet you are truly sick of me))))))

  • @shugemery Sick of you ... sure ... but in a really good way. Just glad I'm not stuck 20 miles from the nearest road, with you (LoL) ... captive audience ! ... Sincere, tho, you are a great instructor and you should get a gig doing Comedy Defensive "Driving Intruction (compulsory, here, in Tejas ... LoL). 8 hours of Shug ? .... Nobody who has done that will ever run another stop-sign !

( I just did over 3 hours of Shug ... painful, but it all "stuck", real good ... Like Boot Camp.

  • Shug, You always make me laugh!

I would pay money to watch a hiker walk up, and see you in the distance, all set up and talking to yourself in third person! I bet you'd make their jaw drop! That would be funny.

I can just hear it now when the guy says; "Hey honey, quick come look! There's a guy over there talking to himself, over there by that hammock!"

  • @jetpowered1 It has happened...they seem to pick up their pace and motor on.

    Appreciate it.

  • "That would be my egress my friends... and that stick is stabbing me in the crotch."

    this is great

  • @Mueychacha My crotch is still a wee stick-shy!

  • Your videos are great! Im diggin the idea of the pull outs... You think they could be glued on instead?

  • @YODELAYHEHOO2U Well ....you never know until you give it a go. Think it should work.

  • Okay question - How do you feel about using a rope hammock?? Also, have you ever considered using the taut-line hitch for attaching your tarp to the stake. It is adjustable, easy to tie and just as easy to remove as the marlin spike.

  • @TadTheTinker I don't find them as comfortable for a whole night out. The taught line is a great knot...I use it more with my tarp. I just happen to really like the marlin-spike. Thanks

  • This is probably something you are asked often--but do you have the minute details of your tarp construction from Part 8? Seems like a good one to copy.

    Jonathan

  • @kc7fys

That is s Speer Tarp .... no longer made.

Try to google tarp instructions ... might get something.

  • man, you are crazy!

  • @chitlinray Yeah.... I appear to be!

Had fun doing the rap. Just an improv.......

    It embarrasses my daughter.....

  • @shugemery Embarrassing our children is a parental duty.

  • @TBlairY Haaa ...it sure is. My daughter worries if I don't....

  • @R1200cPhoenix Ripstop is best ... not silnylon. A hammock needs to be breathable or your body heat will likely form some moisture in the form of condensation. Silnylon is special and used for tarps as it is waterproof.

That Jesse Dixon is a might bit cruel.

  • 4:06 "that, would be my egress, my friends, and that stick is stabbing me in the crotch" Bahahahaha I laughed out so loud, the two pilots chillin in the lounge behind me must think I'm insane! Thank you Sire for the oodles of entertainment provided during the dull hours of work!

  • @Cheekee13Monkee

Well that made my day ......!!!!

    Y'elcome and Whooooo Buddy.

    Shug

  • @shugemery 4 months later and I still kill myself laughing

  • Crocs.....????

    i mean...crocs.....??????

really...up until now everything was all good but those crocs make me doubt that you're the reall thing...

otherwise, nice series...now to see the grand finale..

  • @atzerath

    Yeah .....crocs.

The Gorge is rough and my boots stink.

  • Shug, I really enjoy your vids. You're quite the showman. I have a suggestion, instead of sewing on the line to draw the sides of the tarp out. Try using an old garter. Just rhe clips and buttons. Buttons on the inside, and attach your shock cord to the clip. It's also movable....You could probably design one of your own... Just an idea....Peace

  • We need the out takes you can't post here!

  • @rmojo23

I really don't keep them around .... could be used against me!!!!!!

    Thankee

  • i've seen all your vids, and would just love to ask a question, but it has nothing to do with hammocks, and not alot to do with you,, i think your a wicked chap, but wtf does your misses think of all this malarkey, lol :oP

  • @chefslot

Hey ... you should see what she does!!!

We met in the circus. Case closed. Just normal to her.

I like the hat and crow logo at the end.

    Thanks

  • Thankee gunn .... a nice gift.

  • I LMAO at 4:12. Dude you are a lunatic! But a very informative and entertaining one. Thanks for all the hard work it took to make these videos, Im learning alot from them!

  • That is terrific .... that you are getting something from these!!!!

  • Ok who have you performed with or for before, ya got sum skill my rizzo. keep it real yaul. Be catchen your next gig on Y.T. bring it on homes.....

  • Well ..... cheap mic and it is already broken! A safe and careful rock star......

  • Haha Shug, you're the best. 10/10 for this video.

  • Hope something was learned.......

  • Great vid, do you ever plan on posting some where the directions on making that tarp?

  • I will have a meeting with my people on that.

  • 'wasn't trying to slam your character, but c'mon. a hammock rap? obviously, part of your video wasn't made to be taken seriously. when you're not being goofy, you're providing great information. if i threw a stone, it was a pebble. you gotta take slightly bad criticism along with the high praise, man. that''s life.

  • True.... true.

The "R" word does not wash good with me. But I get your point.

  • poms poms out shouting

    "go shug, go shug"

my god man love the tarp RAP!!! lol!

I checked out opie's site, not bad, shame it costs so much to get it over here!!

    great stuff Mr Emery

  • Cheers Mike ... easy enough to make though! Use small s-biners instead of toggles or whatever.

Tarp rap ... linited crowd but ..wht not. My daughter said .."Why Da? Why?"

  • laugh out loud funny.... very entertaining shug

  • Very much thanks.

  • damn, now im hungry for steak tips! cool video good impressions lol

  • Now I am too .... Steak tips ....m-m-m-m-

  • "I smell your expensive back pack an cheep hiking boots.."

    LMAO! :)

  • that kinda just popped out on the second take ... fun being creepy.

  • Your stage atire reminds me of Elmer Fudd, Waynes World, after an Eddie Bauer fashion discount show and last but not least a little Dora the Explorer back pack.

Talk about confidence a man with groopies from so many angles he has to hide in the woods just to get a moment of silence.

Take me away majic MoJo hammock. I shall use my majic tarp and walk my way to instant serinity.

  • ★★★★★

  • I usually camp alone. Most of my friends just do not "get" backpacking ... i love the solo trips.

  • Went to New Orleans zoo today and I am beginning to long for thoose quiet moments. But I have the adavantage of the house to myself almost every day. While that is not the quality out doors time it is spent alone and I need that. As you may know truckers spend more than their average share of time alone it is why some wash out seek other employment they just can't take all the years alone. Usually the only time you can count on a trucker being there is Christmas they miss the games dance.....

  • It was just the kid and the wife at the zoo, but when outdoors I metal detect or go fishing. I almost never go there just to hang out like I did as a teen. Back then I would paddle my boat on the bayou just enjoying the calm mild temps it is one of those things you can't say why you do it just nothing else you want to do when you are doing it. The star gazing I totally get I can watch them till I fall asleep.Guess I need to do your way to c if it is my style I need to pick a site and go.

  • Thank ye' kindly.

  • Awesome as always Shug! 5/5! I'd love to see you do a video on all of your favorite knots for tarping.

  • I really only use a couple! I am a simple feller. Marlin-spike, timber-hitch, garda, slippery half-hitch, clove and prussick.

  • You are the Best !!! Love this series.

  • Thanks a lot and then some.....

  • LMAO the hole way threw!!! thanks!!

  • That! That is what I want!

  • entertaining

  • I bow here....

  • awesome. funniest yet! gotta love love sling blade.

  • I would do SB all the time if it would not drive folks crazy.....

  • OMG funny stuff Shug. I think you about covered all the bases. Good job and thanks for the wet pants. Ya im with Patiot36 how about camera rig, PVC home made steady cam,

bi pod stuck in belly button, trained ferret ? do tell O shug.

  • I am just sicking my camera on a small tripod into my headlamp strap! total hill-billy head-cam.....

  • Holy cow Shug, this one made me cry I was laughing so hard. 9:43 got me good.

Two things, please tell me about your hands free camera rig...what is it? Also, I enjoy learning the various knots that you most frequently utilize. Perhaps you could do a vid covering your 5-7 most common knot types, or just continue to incorporate certain knot lessons into this series. Much enjoyed and appreciated.

    Paul

  • Bad when ya' crack yourself up ...!

I am just sicking my camera on a small tripod into my headlamp strap! total hill-billy head-cam.....

As to knots ... i do not use many. I keep it simple.

  • You got way to much time on you'r hands. Good thing for us watching you. As a nu-bee I thank you, lot's of great info, keep it comming.

  • I have an ambitious wife!!!!!

  • Looks like Elmer Fudd and Woody Allen had a kid! LMFAO!!!

  • That is good!

  • Bravo LL Shugster 5/5

  • Bow....

  • Can't express myself! I'll sound to repetitive :o) 5 stars all the way bro :o)

  • I appreciate it regardless.

  • I appreciate that you appreciate it :o)

  • It's as though Jonathan Winters has returned from the grave. Except that while he was dead he learned to juggle and play the mandolin. And ride a unicycle. And hammock camp. On second thought....anyone under 50 has no idea who Jonathan Winters was.

  • Funny. My Dad loved him so I saw him quite a bit.

    Thankee....

  • gotta love this guy!!!

  • some don't ... glad you do!

  • Shug..Yer eat plumb up!!! Entertaining video with alot to learn along the way...Thanks!

  • Do you know a Jame Gumb or a James Gumb?

    Run Starling.

    Cheers

  • yer he really gets under my skin that guy

  • Dude, you are a riot! You would be hilarious to hike with. I would have sore sides after the trip, and that would be from busting a gut, not from the hike! 5*****

  • I am quiet when I hike....... well I hum a lot.

This is just the camera me. I am a dullard!

  • Dawt.Dawt.Dawt. lol

    to funny sir.

  • Col. Bruce Hampton ... one of my favorite parts of that movie.....

  • ★★★★★

  • I bow to thee.......

  • LOL A+ more! more! more!

  • Ahhhh . front of the class under the teachers eyes!

  • Try Indian pullouts, a small round rock (or marble) inside with the line attached by a clove hitch. No sewing.

  • I have. If I have a tarp with no tie outs for sure.

  • wow, there's even stuff about hammocks in there, your vids are so all encompassing. That squatting on a sharpened stick idea isn't anywhere near as comfortable as you made it look Shug, I ain't doing that again!

  • It was a bit off-line thank goodness......

    I appreciate your comment.

  • Snake skin looks like the umbrella covers you get when you buy a new unbrella and we loose those things all the time I will be saving them next time for my tarp.

You claim to cook when in the hammock how do you pull that off?

Very entertaining LOL toward the end Momma and ??? in the hammock that is just hilarious.

  • Might be a wee short for a tarp ...... try it out though.

I lay in my hammock with an alcohol stove and just lean over.

My fave moment in the woods....

  • Lovin it, keep them coming!!!!

  • I must......

  • Youy look like Willam Defoe on crack! Great!!

  • That is hilarious!!!

  • When you crack up to the 'Jesse Dickson' line....I love it when people can make themselves laugh. That is true Zen! You crack me up something fierce! Long live the lawnmower blade...I call it a slingblade.

  • I really love talkin' about that Jesse Dixon. Knew a feller like him!

  • HA ha, you BEST Video yet. You have no where to go but...

    Nah, Your the SHUGE.

    Can't wait for more. 8-)

  • I will take a break now .... not for good but for a while.

  • another winner

If I act even remotely like this my kids tell me I am scaring them

  • My daughter expects it or she thinks I am sick or not well.....
