hell yeah its jus like goin to a prayer meetin and havin the good revernd doctor william grace put the touch on lil jimmy shackleford after that poison snake bit him and everone in the tent was feelin that power the revernd got goin into lil jimmy. he done it by god and we was all proud as hell. aint nobody can tell what its like unless you done it. that prayer meetin was like a grateful dead concert to me. thats when the late Mr. Garcia, may he rest in peace, was alive. aint nothin like it.
Thanks for posting these. My husband got me hooked with Barton Hall, but I like the pace of this too. The "tuning and noodling" is endearing and seemingly unique to them. Funky tuning on the Travis Bean for this one. doesn' t have it quite down like Cornell, but I like the slide and sticking it in his back pocket--classic. He apparently was extremely quick going from plucking to pick because he stuck the pick in the stump on his right hand. Great tune. thanks for bringing some Jerry back to us.
Thanks for posting. Been playing this song in my head for five days now, a message from above tellin me to row. The boys always guide me, and Jerry was/is right: if you get confused listen to the music play. When a tune pops into my head repeatedly for a week I know it's a message and always think, Hey, Thanks Jerry. (People may think Im nuts, but it's true- this is the the closest to religion I got as a kid, and it still is. Saint Jerome.) Again, thanks for posting. Right on time. x ox
@JimmyPage97 There is no way to sum up the experience for you; I have no answer to your question that isn't personal. These shows were deeply spiritual events for many of us. Semantics will only muddle this further (spirituality vs "religion"), as individual perceptions of reality will define each persons own experiences. I am speaking to my personal experiences with the band only. If you listen, you can find your own messages.
@JimmyPage97 OK! The intention in my reply was not to be a dick; I hope it didnt come off that way. It's not so much a "direct message" as it is a "gut feeling" or intuition, a "reminder", if you will, that everything works itself out, everytime, always. For me, the specific vibration of certain songs brings me to a place of pure joy, in turn lifting my own vibration higher. There are few musicians that can do this for me. Patti Smith or Diamanda Galas, for ex; I can "feel" their energy. Peace.
@FunKills1969 Oh I know. I'm not trying to spark anything. You just said that it sends you a message. I asked what the message said, and you replied that you couldn't answer.
But as far as "feel"-ing the energy, I know exactly where your coming from. Or at least I believe so.
@FunKills1969 I just question it. I heard a TON of comments like "MrCaptainCompost"'s comments. When I read it I just get a feeling that its really a "empty" comment. I question these comments just for the sake of learning. When I hear something like I get the message to row. A thing goes off in my head saying what does he even mean. Most people, like Captain, have no replying comments.
I'm all cool though, I'm not trying to like start a bitch fight.
@JimmyPage97 hahahaa! no worries, no bitch fight. I gotcha. I guess the "message" manifests more as a feeling than a directive. It's just vibration and energy. At the shows this energy would rise from the individuals and converge as a mass of vibration; sometimes it would be so intese it felt like it was gonna blow the roof off the hut. Sometimes I hear a song and I can feel in my body the way it felt to see it live, reminding me to remember love, peace and compassion, hard work and patience.
Damn..something about this song..this time..i'm 60 yrs old..maybe not Total Deadhead..but definitely a "bonified" one..and out of all ..this song..this concert , this day..its all 'moving'.....but this makes ya move..so kewl to see young dudes into them..my son likes them..remember garcia saying that "The Grateful Dead are like Black Licorice...you either love it or hate it.."..oh well
To me, Julie is Jimmy's wife or girl. They live poorly by the banks of the river during the depresion(2bit pice dont buy nomore)and Jimmy owns or works for a ferry service of some kind and takes people from one side or the other for 1/2 a dollar. They can't afford nice things like watches (ask the time baby I don't know) and they are questioning whether they are going to make it. Julie is the free spirit running off catching rabbits and dancing by the levee. Thats what I think, could be way off.
julie is a dog who must be left behind cause she wont fit on the raft. The dancing levee will soon be flooded over displacing thousands filling the town 100 feet deep. this happened alot around the late 19th
i like this tempo, most bands would never be able to be comfortable at such a slow speed, but the dead were always really listening and letting the music come. thats why they are the most successful live band in history, even if some shows werent successful....haha....thats life though right
cool.....my son was at a MSG show in '93 in much the same way as you were at your first show....my first show was 2 days before Roosevelt Stadium...the show w/Row Jimmy....Colt Park in Hartford.... huge crowd....those without tix tore down fences and at the end of the show started a big bonfire...lots of oinky oinks...so it was exit stage left and the end....but the music was so good...even all my listening didn't prepare me for thatopened with Promised Land..the start of a long, strange trip.
It was meant to be in the mud, that is why Jimmy had to row and they were never quite sure if they were gonna get there, "I don't know."
Great Dead Reggae. When they did this the audience knew the Dead were going to try to achieve something, or at least that is the way Hunter wrote the lyrics.
I want this video on my GU285 unit.

I love how the fans cheered while they were tuning. And got louder as it went on.

This song wasnt written about the deads relationship to the crowd.."the jukebox" was a whoarhouse/bar. Its a story. Christ
