  • This guy is retarded, who doesn't know what he is talking about, he talks about credentials, how many times in history have those with credentials being wrong or lied on purpose, many many times, all we need to look at is the lies the newspapers told us before the Iraq war for an example, and we are suppose to keep listening to people like this, this why the world is os screwed up in the first place because people like this have being running it for too long.

  • Interesting that this video was posted nearly 5 years ago, and we must admit that the user generated content is gaining over the professional content, for better of worse.

I don't think we should be pulling the plug, but this puts a lot more responsibilities in the hands of the audience. I think we are still in the "baby phase" and it's probably time for all of us to grow up and embrace this new reality without compromising the truth for our addiction to entertainment.

  • 1.00 to 1.15 DIRECT QUOTE : 'Information is unreliable and entertainment is inadequate' - Well if this prick thinks network media has Reliable information and Adequate entertainment then I'll have a pint of whatever bullshit he's been drinking.

  • good topic. you guys sound old though. interesting fact: 100% of my views are male (15-30 i imagine)

  • wow, canot wait to read this!

  • By the way, Gregory, you did a great interview of Keen. You engage in a two-way conversation, but didn't talk over your guest or promote your own views (other than to keep the conversation going, like on the topic of the 9/11 'documentary'). You have a relaxed style that reminds me of the qualities I liked about Dick Cavett.

Depending on your guest, I expect to watch your show again. Keep up the good work.

  • 17:49 he says fox was the closest to a reliable media !!

    hahahahah

  • I'm sorry, I love this though. It's so true.

  • I think that this man has a political agenda underneath his assertions about the questionable nature of the unlettered material of the amateur. I wouldnt be surprised to learn he is working for the elite and their goal of suppression of information and the police state. This man has been on booktv and nowadays it seems that almost every major figure you see on tv is some scumbag working for the elite.

  • the only real issue is the that people past times interfere with children doing their homework and remaining ignorant and displaying this in their videos therefore creating the cult of the amateur or the ignorant

  • I disagree with Keen. I don't have any difficulty telling advertising from original, amateur content.

  • Andrew keen, you are a stuck up idiot! The Internet played a major role in Barack Obama's victory! I guess the Cult of the Amateur has its benefits after all.

  • I have an idea for Andrew Keen, why doesn't he start his own academic encyclopedia online, where he can invite leading researchers to monitor what is being edited? It may gain some credibility if it is monitored. It would be a good place for university researchers to place their findings into subjects. I suppose what it really boils down to is money? They wouldn't get paid for a wiki entry but would get paid for writing a book.

  • I have an idea for Andrew keen, he needs to wake up from slumber land. Sure we need scholars. The beauty of the Internet is the ability of ordinary people to expand their horizons. Look at the incident in Oakland where an unarmed man was murdered by Metro Police Officers. The footage was shown on You Tube, not CNN. President Obama's victory extols the power of the Internet.

  • This is a great book. He nails it pretty much on the head.

  • @cochranexyz Have you ever thought that these very comment you are making is brought to you by those tools which allowed the so called amateurs, to have a freedom of speech, that's you dumb ass.

  • @viewsonicplastic2222 Um, yes.......

  • Andrew Keen: "Anyone can put out a video; there are no gatekeepers, on youtube you just slap up your content, it's chaos, it's anarchy; the kids are in charge and the inmates are running the asylum."

FANTASTIC! That is exactly what the world needs you techno creationist luddite fool!

  • One area where his argument falls down is music. In the early 70's there was too much power in the hands of a very few A & R men. It is an absolute good for it to be cheaper for new bands to make music and get known.

  • Actually it is not a particularly well-written book: especially towards the end when he just rabbits on endlessly- passing judgement on the internet on the basis of pornography was passe 10 years ago, and is barely relevant today! His attack is directed at the 2.0 world- wikis, blogs... This is primarily because it threatens the authority of noted "experts" (such as himself) who dwell in the traditional media. Anyone else disagree?

  • I think he is on strong ground when he criticizes the anonymity of Youtube and how that can be abused by corporations or political parties. I think though that his idea that we can trust established news outlets is unsound. We need to be careful what we believe from any news outlet.

  • The problem with your argument (I'm still reading the book) is that you are assuming that professional media is reliable. Now, I do agree it is way more reliable than bloggers. However, the possibility of commenting on the professional media and using it to create your own perspective is what is so great about the Internet. The access to both professional and amateur media not only broadens the public's view

  • Thus, only the truly good comments, the good media will flourish. Professional newspapers MUST adapt to this.

  • does anyone believe his book is a giant self parody? cause it's pretty evident

  • keen's book is excellent and has very good points supported by reliable sources. An important and brave work. there's only one problem when he cites Madonna as a significant contribution by the traditional media. Madonna is an example of how traditional institutions can fail us... MTV WAS SHIT, BUT THE INTERNET IS MUCH WORSE.

  • kdaumkdaum...I agree.

I have seen professionals ruined by the comments/opinions of the unqualified anonymous.

  • you`re right

  • Well its the so called professional media that dumbing down the society. And what is professional media anyway? I think professional media people is a bunch of dumb repeaters.

  • KEEN=Doush bag

  • YOU- FUCKBRAIN.

  • I would say this in a different way: it's not "The Cult of the Amateur", but rather "the ruin of the professional". After all, what defines the professional? What gives a person the right to claim that he/she is a "professional" at his/her area? A degree? A steady job? We have seen a lot of "professionals" just pretending to be good. That's over as I see it.

  • Keen is right.

    Internet is dangerous.

  • What a BS! I love youtube... I can't put myself on TV. If you don't like youtube, then don't watch.
